I'm gonna get a lot of hate but at his peak Cam'ron was something special. He created a whole lifestyle which dominated NYC for years. I still listen to Purple Haze often. His rhymes are simple and pretty stupid most of the time, but every once in a while he'll throw something into a verse that shows just how sharp he actually is. That's what I think is great about Cam, his ignorance is all a show and he was the best at boasting about shit which is a cornerstone of rap.

OH, and Big L was great too.

Also, how are people talking about wu-tang but not mentioning GZA. Liquid Swords is easily lyrically/conceptually my favorite wu record.

to me Mos Def was always more of a musician than a rapper, if that makes any sense. He's a great lyricist, don't get me wrong, but he used his voice to create melody more often than to display his clever wordplay or imagery.

a+ for the thread idea. hip hop is a topic deeply connected to my heart. mos def never caught my attention, probably because he's after my time, but i appreciate vhs' passion for him along with some of the mentions by other slappers. here's a sampling of some that i would consider for the best lyricist crown:

rakim
kool g
krs
big l
slick rick
mc lyte
big daddy kane
nas
ll cool j
biggie

Lyrically his stuff on Dragon of an Ordinary Family is amazing.

way too much singing for a “rapper” not named Biz, Nas, or Q-tip.
that slick rick cover was an atrocity.
had to be in a group with one of the most overrated mcs of all time to sound good.
come on.

im glad someone brought up camron he never gets enough credit for actually being a talented rapper

the obvious answer is playboi carti tho

No KRS mention?
Cant believe people can like Krs1.  -such a cock!-
For entertainment check out Stars podcast on yt.  He exposes  Krs1's massive fuck ups.  Krs1 gave an interview talking about teen age victims in the Africa Boombata case and gave some eye opening quotes.  Go watch Krs1s video "13 and good" -that shit is quite a bit 'off' too. He was close to Boombata too all thru those times in question.  I always hated krs1 since the late 80s so i was giddy about his bad press.

not sure how you landed on Mos Def for this, seems pretty random, but we all have our own perspectives--i'm sure generation and location tie into this...either way, as far as i'm concerned, Freddie Gibbs is the best since Nas on Illmatic and Mobb Deep on The Infamous...grown-ass man stories, the most solid rhymes ever, and all framed in the experienced space of a deindustrialized city (Gary, IN) which those of us in Detroit can't help but to feel here in the "Rust Belt"...Pinata has been on repeat since it fucking came out...

Black Thought, Biggie, and Andre 3000 are solid responses. I almost made this thread for Black Thought. I think Mos could keep up with any one of them. I only have proof for one.

Actually I feel robbed that we never got a 3 Stacks x Mos Def collab because they are a perfect match of creativity lyricism and flow

Nobody who’s heard Black On Both Sides or Black Star would say this is random. Dude is A1 elite MC. Freddie is a way more random name to claim as the greatest. I fuck with Piñata heavy though.

Reminder that I’m not saying Mos is the GOAT. He doesn’t have the consistency or longevity because he doesn’t care, but that in his prime, or when he’s really going in, no one is better.

Mos sings better than most those dudes you named tho. Talib is a legend and Train of Thought is better than your favorite rap album.
