Why don't more people skate Switch off the tail?
« on: April 01, 2024, 07:28:11 AM »
I think this makes more sense... the nose is designed to hit the floor later when you take off for nollie so why wouldnt the same apply to fakie? I understand people like to keep their turning the same, and I have heard some people say they like the tail hitting sooner on switch. Seems like it goes against why the board was designed that way to me though. I have done this the past few times and I feel like your wheels wear out a lot more evenly and your trucks feel way more balanced. You have to skate a lot of switch though.

Ben De Gros replied to my comment on this on his video and he said he likes how regular and fakie are always off the same foot and switch and nollie are always off the same foot, so the timing feels like it doesnt change. I could see how that makes sense.

That timing is the reason why I enjoy fakie tricks so much

Well lemme ask you this: would you want a pocket knife with one blade or two?

There you go.

(It just… I don’t know… it just feels proper to use one foot for tail, and one foot for nose. I would fall down and get an Owie if I tried popping the wrong side.)
I’m not letting my YouTube algorithm anywhere near that video.

I do a bunch. My boards are directional. I like to have as much variation between the nose and tail as I can while maintaining the functionality.

If I'm going to shuv nose grind I start on my nose. Probably be easier on the back truck cuz my feet are all close together at the pop. So it stays rocket and it goes straight to NG. I like to nose grinder on my front truck always. Fakie 5oh back truck always.

Idk it's a trick to trick basis I guess. Just cruising switch. Going over manholes and whatever I'll be riding the rail.

Also if you do any 180 switch stuff you land with the board on a "correct" position.

Good shit

I’ve been not stressing so much about which way my board is these days.

Riding a few symmetrical eggs helped.

Back when I was starting out. I was shocked to find out my friends pointed out I was doing fakie flips off my nose. Ever since then I've done fakie and switch stuff off my nose. I've tried to pop a switch flip off my tail but was too grossed out by how it felt.
We rode 7.5's" and didn't complain.

I pop off the nose for more than just switch, I skate my board backwards for pop shuvs, hardflips, varial flips/heels and basically any trick where the board does a 180 (but not if I'm 180ing with it).
I think it's that the nose is longer so you get a faster pop and I like that for certain tricks and situations.

isnt this just something that someone people looked up to/feared in the 90s like Ricky oyola said you couldnt do?  like u cant push switch mongo, u cant skate wheel graphics out, u cant do a front side 180 trick followed by a backside 180 trick, etc.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that's not the case for me. I didn't even know that was a thing.
Like I said before, the nose is a bit longer so you get a slightly quicker pop, but also I think the tail being smaller and less steep makes it a lil easier to flick, so for me the faster pop and lighter flick when skating the board backwards makes things a lil easier when I'm skating switch.

Corey Duffel had a great regular pop shove
lots of people have had good switch shoves
a shove to manual is harder than a kickflip to manual

I rode my boards backwards for a long time and am mostly immune to which direction it ends up unless my trucks are moody

I also always do pop shuvs (backside and frontside) off the nose. But Nollie pop shuv has to be off the nose also.

If I could do big spins they'd be off the nose.

I would think Rick would be more like play it as it lays. Forget yourself

I skate switch and regular off my tail. I skate nollie off of my nose, and fakie off my tail. Never realized that was weird until this thread... haha
