Adidas is looking for more cultural mainstay/ambassadors that can represent a division beyond just skating moving forward. Gonz alone isn't enough anymore. Makes sense.

After his part in Propeller, I can definitely see why he would be a sought after commodity. And I'm sure he needs the paycheck since he doesn't have any income from say his own growing board brand empire.

All sass aside, this just seems like he's taking someone else's spot on another team. At least Gonz films clips steadily, as weird as they mostly are nowadays.

I was under the impression that Dill basically just put himself on vans a few years back because he felt like that was the best look for him at the time. Eventually he got some kind of deal, but I'm sure it wasn't anything insane or long term.

First time in a while I've been genuinely taken aback by a sponsorship change.

Dill doesn't seem to fit Adidas, but whatever... Get money.

This kinda thing put smaller brands out of business- hanging onto legacy guys who didn't produce content. Dill doesn't even really pimp his own Insta account- so from an "influencer' standpoint, I wonder what he'll be asked to do for Adidas.

^^I've never thought one way or another about you but goddamn if you didn't just win me over with that one.

Anyays, onto brass fucking tacks. Why is everyone giving this forty-year-old dude a hard time about this sponsor change? Why is everyone conveniently forgetting that any footage he's saved up will likely drop in the Supreme video in the coming month? And why is this loathe exclusive to Dill? Like, Daewon hasn't dropped a real part since 2012 (don't give me any of that "he's always skating on Instagram" garbage) and no one says shit about his productivity, not to mention he barely tours and his new brand is objectively worse than Fucking Awesome.

What's the difference, other than collective groupthink?

Daewon could still drop a part every week if he wanted. He's light year ahead of Dill when it comes to skateboarding, a whole other dimension. This is probably the worse exemple you could pick.

Every pro over 35 gets so much shit here about "retiring gracefully" but Dill gets a pass? That's hilarious.
Sorry he's not Mark Gonzales. and definitely no Daewon.

yeah but his actual skateboarding ability currently has nothing to do with his sponsorship, he has a design influence in the skateboarding world and Adidas obviously sees that.

You didn't answer any of my questions or address any points I've made. I don't care about what Daewon "could" do. If Daewon can drop a part every week, why hasn't he done it in seven years? Why are we judging one pro on what he "could" do and another on what he "isn't" doing?

to be fair though, daewon is constantly posting his shit on insta. it's kinda the same as dropping a part these days because of the popularity of instagram.

Man you can't be serious here. You're not making any point comparing someone who skates everyday to Dill.
I'm also surprised i would have to explain to anybody on a skateboarding forum what Daewon has been doing since 2012. I wish Dill would skate everyday and post any kind of media more often, he used to be a great skateboarder.

I can't figure out if I'm stoked on Dill or if I'm super bummed on the dude.

I met him at Supreme one time. After talking with him for about 2 minutes, I just wanted him to stop talking to me. At first he was politely dismissive and then he was awkwardly over chatty.

Also, Daewon is amazing. Yea, he doesn't do parts as often as we'd like, but his social media posts aren't the usually throw-away Insta-garbage. He is always posting something insane. He just needs someone to go back through is Instagram clips and edit them into a solid part.

I'm a fan of Dill the skater, and he can be a great interview. But, Daewon gets a pass purely on the fact he's arguably the greatest street skater ever. His combination of technical ability combined with his eye for spots is unreal. Daewon also doesn't have a history of saying ridiculous shit. Like, Dill calls out Kalis for being up river, while he also admitted, he'd just get his shit together for a year to film a part, then go back to his drug filled bohemian NYC lifestyle.

In general, if you are loud and blatant bringing attention to yourself in certain ways, you are more likely to be called out. It's why people generally say nothing about Ave, but bash Dill, despite the fact there careers are so intertwined.

Not sure why Adidas would waste money here, whatever they are paying to Dill, they could fill this hole internally from a culture level with Scott Johnston.

Scott's a legend and held in high regard, but Dill is the guy who is linked with Supreme at a very high level and schmoozes with celebrities and owns a very successful board brand which has pretty much all the people in the next supreme video.

Would I rather Jerry Hsu got this deal? Absolutely. But, pretty much any corporate brand would want Dill on it just for his associations. Adidas loves being associated with brands like Supreme, FA, and Palace.

Totally get it, but would rather see this money go to "his" skaters, rather than to buy his influence.

I'd completely reverse my opinion if he would put together something / anything footage-wise, but it seems unlikely.

Wonder if FA grew too quickly / came back to earth / is mismanaged, and he needs the money.

What does a legends contract look like at Adidas, how much can this really be worth? Does he even have other offers on the table?

23 era Dill was raw.

Remember when dill went a while after etnies without a shoe sponsor saying things like “I just wanted to ride for a company who’s sticker I wasn’t ashamed to put on my board man. That’s all I ever wanted man.” Talking about vans stickers I guess.

Wonder how many stickers adidas sends him per month.

I imagine this could be helpful for the image of Adidas, with Dill functioning as a brand ambassador, rather than a productive pro skateboarder, which he has rarely been. Don't get me wrong, I love his Photosynthesis part and he's done some great shit over the years. But Jesus Christ man - he blew it so hard with Propellor.

For me it comes down to this: if you wanna be called a pro skateboarder, you have to skate. There are all kinds of people who are in skating and contributing to the culture post skate career, and that's rad. But to still be a pro get some fucking tricks documented. It's the whole job. I wouldn't have cared if they weren't mind blowing tricks, but put together a part or step down. I think someone like Chico in the Instagram era is a great example of someone who is putting stuff out that's fun to watch. That's all you've gotta do - no one is expecting older pros to be pushing the limits. Get tricks or get rid of your board.

Unrelated: Tried to watch that Bobshirt interview with Dill - he has a very annoying tick where he can't help but touch his face and/or hair every ten seconds. Weird.

Everyone’s always quickest to criticize Nike but adidas is honestly more gross. Anyone with influence can get an adidas endorsement deal regardless of whether or not you do anything of merit.  They employee the whole fuckin kardashian family. At least Nike is paying the people involved in their sports I guess. Adidas sucks which is sorry to say because they have a lot of great riders and awesome filmers as well.

Word. What strikes me is that adidas seems to have realized having a traditional team is outdated. Why bother promoting, let's say, 10 team members when you can throw gear to whoever is popular on social media? Even in the proper tour edits they make, I have no idea who some of the guys are...much more flexible, and I'd assume cheaper, to pull in the kinds of skater that are popular this year and cycle out less fashionable people when your "team" is basically a flow program without the formality of an official am/pro acknowledgement and distinction. Nike tried to do this initially by expanding their flow program to every halfway decent am or pro without a shoe sponsor, but adidas has used this model more proactively.

I think the misconception here is that to do a collab with FA, Adidas have to sign Dill, not necessarily true due to Tyshawn and Naks connections, I think what it boils down to is Dill getting paid for sitting on his arse. The comparison to Daewon is so absurd because I can check out his story and hes probably skating, all Dill does is make collage edits for new product dropping. At the end of the day people want to see great skaters skate and there are guys older than Dill still putting shit out there so why can't he?

On some level I know I'm wrong,  but I'd rather watch Dill rant with a half smoked joint in his hand than watch Daewon sit on a rolling chair or take his wheels off in the middle of tricks. Even if he's pound for pound one of the best skaters ever,  Daewon has always just seemed kinda gimmicky with his trick selection/style/whatever. Even back in the picnic table stacking days.  I'd rather have outsiders look at the industry and see FA stuff than a Daewon panty raid board...I don't really know where I'm going with this.

Why is everyone assuming Dill doesn’t skate? He was doing those flat ground edits for a little bit. He’s also getting older. He’s probably not going out and fucking around just to put stuff on instagram. He’ll probably have a decent minute or two or maybe just some stuff sprinkled through out the new Supreme video.

At least Nike is paying the people involved in their sports I guess. Adidas sucks which is sorry to say because they have a lot of great riders and awesome filmers as well.

Both suck ass but this 100%. The fucking worst.

both are trash and fuck the dumbass kardashians

Most of my post are talking random, mostly factual shit(too me) but on the serious tip. This company supports this literal trash of talentless humans that arguably make society as a whole, a whole fucking lot worse because they exist...so yeah. Fuck this little skateboard bubble kook world. They should get blacklisted for this sad fact alone.

turning a sex tape into a billion dollar industry?  i don't like them but i also don't think they are a bunch of morons.  shrewd as fuck.  their success and influence is not some random accident, although i'm sure they like it to appear that way.  i respect the hustle but i don't like the results

i liked adidas cos they have sick edits but i dont like them supporting dill, dude is just unbearable recently.

I'd rather have outsiders look at the industry and see FA stuff than a Daewon panty raid board...I don't really know where I'm going with this.
woah, are you alright there bro? Might need to go to the doctor and see if you've got a fever

I don't know about corny, but I think you may be watching him for the wrong reasons. You don't watch Rodney Mullen for his style do you? No, you watch him because he's a fucking tech-wizard that blows your mind. Daewon is just the same but with difficulty setting turned up to asian level. He will go down as one of the GOATs because no one will ever have his board control or be able to progress as much as he has (at least on street anyway) well into his 30s and 40s.

edit: no one gives a shit abut his "graphics" the same way that no one gives a shit what graphics Tony Hawk or Mullen ride. Imagine having to rely solely on your board graphics for your image (having said that, thank you looks like a pile of shit)

Blah. Blah. Blah.
Dill on [enter any company] he’s not going to skate. He gave up in the mid 90’s.
Yes, he is/was incredibly talented but went the way of gino a long time ago. 3/4 tricks per video.
He’s a figure head of skateboarding and adildos will pay him for it. He is now a business man, bring on the collabs.

you ever think that dill's in his 40's and realized he isn't what he used to be? or like that he almost died and didn't quite get back to his physical peak? that maybe publically producing content that's far beneath the things you once did is depressing as hell? bc being great at something and watching that slip thru your hands bc of things out of your control is pretty fucking upsetting to me

I couldn't stand following Daewon on instagram. I don't feel like I'm seeing skateboarding. It's like watching some guy practice juggling on a unicycle. Like Dustin Dollin said about 3D skateboarding magazines, "Are you that bored of skateboarding?"

Love 90s and early 00 Daewon. Legendary. I was okay with the goofy basketball jersey wearing, Deca picnic table Daewon too.

Dae is pretty untouchable and a good role model.  That said, I agree he is turning into a viral video gimmick and the batman boards, Adidas shoes, and thank you release aren't helping.  I miss the cheese and crackers, the death defying table stacking, and the weird roof gaps.  Daewon was such an inspiration for my skating but I can't really knock him for his decisions.  Thank you being the exception

If we can confirm that Dill had a stunt double, I'll venmo you $3. Scout's honor.

All I can say is that the Palace boys won't be happy about this

and lol yeh, I was actually trying to figure out if that was really Dill or not based on that back heel touch and chip

1. I'm going to buy a freestyle setup because of that Mullen video
2. If you think dill can't chip a soccer ball ball into a goal from 20 yards, like it's some kind of impressive feet, you should have played some sports in high school.

Dill's got it figured out. If I was getting free tracksuits that's all I'd wear.
