So this is my second board that got the griptape perfectly applied but for some reason, the second griptape also has bubbles. I never had any issues in the past with any griptapes (went with jessup in the past, wanted to try something new) so i wonder what the deal is with Mob?
-
Cut into the bubbles with a razor, pat them back down, good to go.
-
Mob is perforated. How do you have bubbles?
Are you saying it’s not completely perforated? Defeact?
-
If you have bubbles on Mob, you're not using Mob.
-
I wanna think that it’s not because of air bubbles but that the adhesive on that back doesn’t stick well, I’ve had the same issue with the last couple boards that I’ve gripped.
-
Where the grip coming from? Like, where are you buying it at?

Stick with Jessup. It’s funny how skaters go on about made in USA - but fall for the marketing of Mob (Thailand?) which is an inferior product - too thick and rough. Even Mob knows it’s ‘too grippy’ and had to release M-80 (cue more marketing).

Mob’s made in Taiwan. I’d take a sheet of mob over jessup anyday

Thanks for the correction - made in Taiwan. Each to his own; it’s too thick for me and hard to cut for factory reset grip job. Also chips on the edges when filing down - but I guess no one does that anymore. And until I have no choice, I’m sticking with USA made.

Seems like it since its the second griptape i had to add on the same board.

I never had issues with Mob prior to that. In the late 80s/ early 90s ive used Jessup exclusively. Maybe i should have stuck with Jessup afterall. I dunnno..

Are the “bubbles” whre the deck curves up into the tail/nose? I’ve has this problem where i dont grip carefully and it ends up not adhering all the way to the dip and feels like its stretched across, but thats my fault not mob’s fault. The only other problems with mob (and i assume nhs is aware of this) but if its anything under 45 degrees F then it has trouble sticking to the board and can peel off.
Still take mob anyday before i skate some jessup.
-
I've had this issue with the last 2 boards I gripped with Mob. The first time I had the problem I assumed it was because I used a sheet of grip that was sitting on a shelf in my apartment for 6 months and wasn't "fresh".
But then I just gripped another board with mob right from the shop and it's coming up. Not as bubbles, but rather that the glue on it is not strong enough to stick to the board.
I am sticking to Jessup from now on. I used to change back and forth because I think both grips have their pros/cons but with 2 dud sheets of mob in a row I'm a little iffy on it now.

Works for me.
-
Black Magic>mob m80>jessup>regular mob
Those who skate shake junt or grizzly shall be dragged into the street and shot.

Main issue with MOB for me is their support of white power.

I’ve had this happen to me a few times with mob. For me it was definitely a problem with the adhesive. I could cut holes in the bubbles and push them down and they’d be back in 24 hours or less. I had to re grip it. I’m not sure if I had oil on my hands and it messed up the adhesive or it was just a bad sheet but it’s happened with mob a couple times for me. But.....it’s the grippiest

I notice that a lot of people place the grip on the ends of the board and then push it down in the middle, which doesn't always give it enough slack and can often cause this problem. I place it on the ends to center it and then lift one end up so I can start pushing down from the other end while keeping slack.
I do have the problem with Mob 'chipping' while cutting it like someone mentioned. Even with a brand new blade it cuts kinda shitty, but it's not that big a deal. I like it cause it stays grippy for the life of the deck.

Mob grip (the regular shit) is a bit of a pain in the ass to apply because it's such a low grit even though it's perforated.
That's all I had to add. Sorry.

Yeah, I like mob.

I worked in a shop for years and this happened to me as well with mob, it is too hard/rigid so it can be hard to get it to form with the steeper concave

I wish someone would come in here to argue the benefits of their Shake Junt branded grip.

MOB was the only NHS product I’d ever even consider from them but after that

Jessup’s always been solid for me ever since I was kid

A lot of people don’t know, but Jessup is actually a grit/adhesive company that has been around for decades and has stuff for all types of industries and applications. There was a dude that worked for them that decided to market the specific grit used for skateboarding as what we all know it to be. They’re USA made and manufactured. It’s always been consistent, affordable, and practical.
Mob regular and M80 is imported, and of all the times I’ve used it, it feels like it’s not specifically for skateboards. Yeah, you could use Jessup for anything you need it for, but it just FEELS natural for a board. The way it lays and cuts is like butter. Mob doesn’t form well, and it cuts pretty rough, fresh or dull blade.
The only downside to Jessup is during really hot summer days the edges kinda melt even if I sanded well, but it doesn’t really affect the performance it just looks sketchy. Mob was more resilient in that regard.

If you don't use the griptape with the spirit crystals that align with your chakras, you're doing it wrong.

Jessup is also the least grippy grip you could buy, personally it’s not for me

Yep, if you want the grippiest grip and pre-made shieldless bearings - NHS has got you covered.

I have lots of issues with their art direction/collabs/designs/crazy grip/politics
But when I buy black grip tape I never think about the brand because I just assume it’s all made in the same factory and they just put a different logo on the bottom.
I’ve never ridden shake junk but I’d like to hear someone talk about it being the best even if they are lying and trolling.

So jessup is cool because it is not a skate company just sand paper branded to skaters, but mob is wack because its a skate company that doesnt feel right for skateboards?
I dont care if you preffer jessup but that reasoning makes no sense

This is the main point of the argument, and as far as my experiences go I tend to agree with it. Mob has always been a gamble for me as far as problems with adhesion and cracking around the edges. I do like that its perforated from a product design standpoint though. Ive also noticed that mob has a really nice deep, black color for the bulk of its lifespan whereas jessup turns more charcoal over time.

So Jessup has made skate griptape since 1975, but it’s not a skate company. So it’s not cool! Lol.

Jessup - less grippy, a lot more malleable so it forms to the board better, glue is super sticky so once that shit is down there ain't no peeling it back up and reapplying it if you got it on wrong. The sides have always shredded, chipped away and peeled up on me super easily even after sanding. Remember when they had that huge batch of defective grip where it would just crack away at the edges?
Mob - more grippy, stiffer and less sticky glue which makes it hard to get it to stick to the board a lot of times; because its so stiff though it makes it a lot easier to cut and get a clean cut in my opinion, jessup is a lot flimsier which makes it harder to cut and get a clean straight cut. Will crack super easily if you bend it even a little.
Jessup is cheaper, so I usually just get Jessup. But it's either/or for me, both have their pros and cons.
-

No, my point is that griptape is different than your average sandpaper. Jessup feels like an ultra tested, tried and true near perfect formula by the way it lays and cuts. That certain grit probably existed in their lineup before it was adapted to being their “skate” grit, but it was still a solid choice.
Mob feels the opposite. It feels made for a more universal purpose that isn’t geared for a skateboard beyond just the marketing.
-
are you that dude from the setup thread that cut his grip into 3 pieces and then overlapped them?
-
I love shake junt grip - to me it feels a perfect in between of Mob and Jessup ;)
-

No but I bet he did that cause Mob. Leave grip tape guy alone!

Mob m-80 is where it's at.
Grippier than Messup, less grippy than regs Mob, no bubbles and is more malleable.
That shitty batch of Jessup lasted forever it seemed; it literally melted away in the TX heat.
-
On my current deck, I actually had an issue with the mob for the first time.
I did have to use a razor blade to get out some of the bubbles, they wouldn’t rub out and that’s never happened with mob for me before.
Also it wpuld lay down weirdly on the deck.
I had to pull it off the board completely and re apply.
I’ve legit never had an issue with laying the grip on before.
Maybe there’s a bad batch going around?
-
I wish someone would come in here to argue the benefits of their Shake Junt branded grip.
Shake Junt keeps the haters away.
-
i personally like shitty grip because kickflips have always been a trick for me to re learn. Grippier grip and my long period of getting use to it ends up having the board smacking the shit outta my ankles all day.
Jessup was the go to, but I notice most shops in my area dont have it, so its always been black magic?
Just gripped a deck with some Mob though. Wish me luck and pray for my ankles
Heelflips with mob however are the shit
-
While we are hating on jessup do some of you freaks actually sand down your jessup?
Does anybody actually sand down their grip to make it less grippy or do people just do it to look cool, similar to popping bearing shields.

not gonna lie i sand down mob, never in public though
-
*sigh* Every sheet of Mob I've ever had has been "bad" in some way shape or form. It's thick, it's stiff, and the glue sucks. But the "grip" is the only grip I like (ever since black magic toned their grip down) so I keeper suffering through it.
The last few sheets I've had I've run under the blow dryer for a while before putting it on which has helped soften it up which has helped make all the issues with putting it on more tolerable.
-
I'll sand grip (jessup included) if I'm skating in shoes that are already broken in. If I leave the shop with a new deck AND new shoes I won't sand it down because I want to break-in my shoes quicker.
-
I know a guy who thinks Jessup is too grippy :'(

I heard you’re supposed to do that to the edges to heat up the adhesive and make it bond better. back in the day people used to pre-sand the entire top of the deck before gripping it.

My friend trey always stands down his grip.
Sometimes we ride each other’s board and his grip is so smooth but his shoes don’t rip nearly as fast and he likes it that way.
I would never want to hang with super sanded down grip.
I had never heard of anyone sanding down their entire grip until I saw him do it.
-
I gripped my first board in 1998 and have ridden most brands around since then at different points - including Girl griptape and Monkey business etc.
Since approximately 10 years, I only skate MOB - Jessup loses it's grip after 5-6 sessions and it's really frustrating. While MOB is bit harsh, and takes 1-2 sessions to break it in, it simply lasts so much longer and somehow feels like it's keeping the pop of the board longer (since you can drag up the board better...?).
Anybody complaining about MOB being too grippy should try Ironhorse grip - got a Zero deck once with Ironhorse griptape on it and the thing was like nothing I'ver seen before/after.

everyone should do this. if youre not thats exactly why your mob peels up

Man, I love Mob, but I’ve been skating other brands because Mob rips my shoes up so fast. Mob M80 is a bit better in that aspect. It reminds me more of Grizzley Grip. I’ve also liked Shake Junt but it’s almost as grippy as Mob and is also very abrasive on your shoes
-
for what it's worth, the last couple sheets of both regular Mob and M-80 have been terrible. Super firm but brittle feeling, wouldn't lay down evenly and created creases everywhere.
After skating nothing but mob for the last 5-6 years, I switched to Jessup on my last couple boards
-

i sand down the griptape on every board i get, and i usually skate jessup. when it's mob though (which i only use if i get it for free with the board, i only bought mob once when my local didn't have any other black grip) i sand it down a lot more. i don't really like grippy griptape, i'm used to skating boards for a real long time from when i was a beginner (it took me three years to learn how to kickflip) so the griptape was usually really worn down when i changed boards and i've learned most of my tricks on that shitty griptape. it messes me up when i skate on a board with grippy griptape, i can't get my flick right and shit.
-
I like mob with my Etnies Marana's, but I tried skating last night in my non-skid work shoes. Nope! My feet were stuck fast to the board. Couldn't even twist my foot when pushing or getting back on the board.
-
I run mob and I have 2 problems with it. First, when applying it had bubbles, even tho it was perforated grip tape. I just stabbed the bubbles with a knife so they're gone. easy fix rather than just cutting off the piece and reapplying. Secondly, WAAAAAAAAAY too damn grippy!!! I know its all personal preference and mob is known for its extremely coarse tape, but it absolutely destroys shoes so careful if youre wearing vans. Kinda sucks trying ollie after just applying because its so coarse that as you try to slide your foot up it levels out before you even kick the tail. I just sanded mine down but ill know for next time not to get mob. So if you love very grippy grip tape go ahead and grab some mob
-
I've been having problems in my mob lately too. Like it seems to not be sticking all the way in some spots. I can hear cracklinly when air gets in it. On one board I peeled it back and used adhesive spray just to get it down. With that said. black grizzly, no logo, no die-cut is the best, just no one ever has it. I like mob m80 but I think I'm moving back to Jessup as my go to.
-

i sand my mob tape and pop out my shield at the skatepark cuz its pretty clean and i love FAST bearings
-
I sand the edges down no matter the brand, just to get it smoov so it won't peel up right away; edges get shredded anyway tho. I never do that to the top, tired it once and fucked it up (removed too much grip).
-

You need to treat it like you treat your women: slow and gentle. Soft cooing sounds seem to help as well.

Well I guess some like it fast and hard. Also I advise to sand down the area around the nose very very lightly so that your grip thumb won't be that bad. I bled once from brand new mob grip tape.

^ gotta sand the nose and the ollie area a little bit to prevent ripping your shoes fast(er)

I dont do the tail cuz then im scared ill sand it too much and my foot will slip on an ollie. also if you want your shoes to die slower then just buy finer griptape cuz mob absolutely EATS shoes

Lately I've been having issues regarding glue on the nose and tail. Could be because is still kinda cold in here I guess.

No issues
Only when I let the shop do it

Has there been a bad batch of MOB recently? Last sheet I got had problems with the adhesive not staying stuck down. It would pop back up leaving like a bubble right where the nose starts to curve up. I ended up ripping it off and just applying some Jessup.
-
So this is my second board that got the griptape perfectly applied but for some reason, the second griptape also has bubbles. I never had any issues in the past with any griptapes (went with jessup in the past, wanted to try something new) so i wonder what the deal is with Mob?
Mob issues? Yeah I've got one issue with it; it's £6.
But seriously, just do it yourself or get a buddy with knows his or her way around the brittle backed tape that is Mob to grip it for you.

Had this exact thing happen yesterday. The few times I've ever used mob it never wants to stick right and always peels off.

Ok good to know it's not just me then. I've been applying grip for years and don't remember that ever happening. Looking forward to trying the new Jessup Ultragrip when it becomes more available.
-
1 out of 5 times Mob works without a hitch, every other time it peels, cuts weird, or bubbles/creases. I have to assume it's made for perfect California climate or something. I can apply Jessup in my sleep at this point, problem being I skate decks forever and Jessup necessitates a re-grip at least once. Also looking forward to the new Ultragrip.
-
I decided to re-grip (which I never do, but this thing was still very fresh) a Habitat that I skated a few months back with Jessup today (because I've been using Jessup pretty much since I stopped riding the aforementioned deck) and I was able to peel off the entire sheet of Mob almost entirely intact. Had the same issues with the grip popping up at the start of the kicks at the nose/tail as mentioned here. I've never had any issue with Mob until this year, not that I'm all that bummed, but it's interesting that this isn't an isolated incident.

I got Mob free with a couple decks and I've been having issues with it peeling on some spots at the edges even with careful filing and sanding. Not even just like the curvy spots where it sometimes gets stretched out, I'm talking like mid-rail. I guess maybe they switched up the adhesive or something cuz I've never had issues with it in the past (mostly m80) I just didn't use it much because it devours shoes.
And here I thought it was just because I suck at gripping decks.
-
I've only used Mob two times, the first sheet (last spring) was great and the second (january this year) I just couldn't get nice edges on. The bad sheet seemed thicker and brittle, I'd agree that it seems like there's been a bad batch out.
-
Fucking sucks, at the end it looks like a damn dick vein on the nose.
Lmao. I have the same shit on one of my decks.

Genuinely curious, when/where was this? My neck of the woods it's been Jessup since the late 90's.

Yeah, where I'm from Black Magic was expensive and unnecessary. Honestly don't know anyone that ever used it. Jessup has been the gear in Australia for as long as I can remember.

I was all about Black Magic back in the day. Whatever happened to it? I recently started skating again after being off my board about 4 years and all the sudden I can't find it anywhere.

Tried Mob m80 on a board fairly recently, both purchased from a local. Fresh batch of grip, too. Gripped, brought it home and it sat there for a day. Went to set it up, adhesive properties became non existent and I pulled the entire sheet off with barely any struggle. Top ply wasn’t even sticky after pulling it off.
Got regular Mob, adhesive worked but left a crease/wrinkle on my nose that never laid down. Swore off Mob. Grabbed regular Jessup for my next board, always reliable. Nope, my edges are melting off from the slightest scrapes. And yeah, I know how to score, slice, and sand the edges properly. Might just have to revisit black magic now?

I have a board already gripped waiting and this keep happening

I have a box with a sheet of bm waiting for me when I get off work in an hour or so. I dunno if there's something fucky with jessup too but one of my last 2 sheets kept tearing even with steady pressure and angle when pulling on the knife and peeling in spots after sanding. I chalked it up to using an old blade and half assing it but this thread is making me wonder.
It is kind of weird that one of the better sheets I've had lately was $4 fake grizzly from wish. It cut like ass but so did everything else so that's probably the blade or me but it hasn't peeled at all and it's holding up reasonably well to abuse so far.

I loved Black Magic back in the day, only thing is it killed your shoes so fast.
Iron Horse was great too, never had any problems, wish they’d still be around.
Don’t like MOB at all. First, the two times I had it, it didn’t stick well to the board, also a bitch to apply because it’s so stiff. You get a tiny fold in it and it’ll crack. Second, it’s way too grippy at first and ends up really slippery after a week... it’s good for like 2 or 3 sessions. Both times I ended up re-gripping with Jessup. Very easy to peel off.
I always keep a few sheets of Jessup on hand. I’ve been to shops that only had MOB and I really needed a board. I don’t care if it’s free, it’s not going on my board.
Jessup is perfect for me.

Local shop owner said he’s laid quite a few sheets of that new plain black Grizzly (without the bear or font) on a few kids’ boards and has never had a sheet of grip apply so easily without bubbles and slice like butter. He’s been in business for decades and has probably gripped thousands of boards, so that says something. Think I’ll try that next if there’s no black magic available. He did mention it costing way too much for a sheet but at this point I’m willing to pay the extra.
Also, that crease pictured above is exactly what I was talking about ^

This is now like the third time I've heard this. I'd be willing to give the plain a go. I've read that it's in between Jessup and Mob as far as grip, but how does it last?

You can get Black Magic for $6 a sheet from TGM. Free shipping on all orders and they're quick about it - usually same day.
Iron Horse is still around too. I got some of their hardware the other day - cheap, chalky, and smelled like rust but it does the trick. SOP is the distributor. Never tried their grip but if its anything like the hardware I'm not in a hurry to either.

Good to know about Iron Horse. I remember it being good grip tape, but we’re talking 12-15 years ago... I don’t know about today.

Tried it recently, is exactly a happy medium between Mob and Jessup. It lasted the same as Mob in my experience

Much appreciated.

I just got what I consider to be my third dud sheet in a row. The first two had small rectangular areas with no visible adhesive and my latest sheet isn't perforated anywhere other than the backing sheet. I always put grip down like I'm expecting it could air bubble but wow! Mob with no perforations with as thin and rigid as it's gotten is a nightmare to put down on something with steep concave. First time since I was a kid just learning to grip that I've had to poke numerous holes in grip to get the air bubbles out. The bad thing about MOB is they're really hard to see but you can hear them when rolling a wheel over it or smoothing it out with the backing sheet.
I think I'm going back to Iron Horse, which even without perforations was so easy to apply! I may give that new Jessup a try too.
-
Mob is garbage. The lay, the creasing, the air bubbles, the slicing. Everything. It makes gripping a board stressful when it should be relaxing. Jessup forever.

Tripping on how many people have issues with mob
I can grip eyes closed no issues but never had it sub 45°F on grip day
Mob M80 is nice

Please don't do that to yourself. Give the new Jessup a try, from my limited experience with it, it reminds me of Black Magic.

The struggle is real. When grip goes bad in the fall/winter (in Canada) it's a cascade of shit.
M80 is more than fine. But seriously, fuck die-cuts in any and all forms.

Last couple sheets of M80 I've used didn't have any die-cuts

One time I had Mob m80, it wasn’t as horrible as regular mob, but the freshly gripped board only sat in my room overnight, and when I went to set it up the next day and noticed the adhesive somehow just dissolved. Peeled the entire sheet off in one clean motion. Fool me once, fool me twice...back to Jessup.

I’ll leave the grip near a heat vent or in my kitchen when I’m cooking when it’s cold to try and get it warmer. I’m not sure if this helps but now it’s habit.

If it shows up here at my one proper skate shop in Okinawa I'll give it a try. I won't order grip from the US anymore as it never seems to arrive in decent shape.

Fortunately I don't have to deal with winter dryness here in Okinawa. I can only imagine how much harder that makes for storing and applying grip. It's really ideal conditions here for grip. I think MOB is just having quality control issues. I've also noticed a difference in how thin/rigid some sheets are compared to others.
Is MOB M-80 any thicker or more pliable? Right now I think the one shop here has MOB, MOB M-80 and Shake Junt. Next trip I'll take a look at the M-80.
Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions!

Strange all the issues people are having with mob, been skating again six months after stoping fifteen years ago, both of my decks in that time have mob grip. Never had any air bubbles and even though my last sheet had a crease in it you can’t tell once I gripped my board. Also not like I’m great at gripping a board, only done it like ten times in my whole life lol.
