Word I wish I was a little kid getting paid to do handplants
-
Damn, what's the rush? He's still a little kid who hasn't even put out a part. I guess this means his part in the toy video is gonna be good.
-
At least wait till he looses that little kid style
-
This is weird.

This is weird.
i miss jump of a building era toy
-

-
This is weird.
Not really, we're in a period in skateboarding where the youth are getting better than the rest of us at a quicker pace because of places like California. Look at how many kids around the age of 10 are getting noticed these days, like the 10 year old who did a boardslide down el toro a few months ago and just won bronze at x-games. Nobody was saying it was weird when Kader went pro even though him and CJ are a similar age and skill level. Over the next few years the age of the average pro is going to decrease a LOT and you can thank all the guys who realised they were too old to make it in skateboarding, but if they had a kid they could live their dreams through them.
-
RIP Toy Machine
-
they typed out 'fuck' but censored 'fucker'? that makes no sense.
-
This kid is good, but this is pretty surprising. Has to be one of the youngest people turned pro for a respected company in awhile. Only other person who comes to mind is Kader. Everyone else I can think of are guys like Nyjah and Shekler who went pro for Element and World really young.
Damn, what's the rush? He's still a little kid who hasn't even put out a part. I guess this means his part in the toy video is gonna be good.
He has full-parts out.
-
I blame instagram for this trend too.. kids like CJ and Kader have 400k followers. That’s a lot of advertising and marketability power it gives them. They don’t have to put out parts and hustle for years now - just get that follower count up dawg and you pro as fuck!

well atleast if they decide to reboot the tony hawk series we know who will be a secret character

Fuck happened to Toy
-
Ugh. I'm not generally a hater, but this kid is the fucking worst. Obviously, "He do good tricks on skateboard", but gross, man. Gross.
-
I fucking hate how nowadays every time someone is given a surprise, whether it’s a birthday or any celebration, all they see when they turn around or turn the lights on are a shit ton of cellphones/cameras pointed at them—no faces, no friends, just lenses.
Have a designated filmer/photographer and look your friend in the eyes. Jebus man...
-
Interesting. I’m just surprised it happened now and not awhile ago.
-
Ersatz Curren Caples needs to go back in the incubator for a few years.

What is the rush? So weird but I can't say I'm surprised, Ed lost his touch long ago...

I don't have anything against most of what you said. Admittedly I was psyched when Kader went pro, but I think that has more to do with both my own personal bias, combined with Reynolds (and whoever else has a say at Baker/DW) vision for the brand and track record of trying to get the promising youth hooked up quick (Herm, Spanky, Theotis, etc are all good examples). I do think the fact that CJ is so young (younger than Kader no?) and heavily involved with most contest circuits, is what makes me question this abrupt bump to the pro ranks. It seems like a cash grab*, no matter how much CJ rips (and he does fucking rip), it just feels 'weird' as my original post states.
*not for Toy Machine, but for CJ and his caretakers, but hey you do you.

sick sweet 16 present, idk

They are about a year apart according to their birthdays on the Vans team.
It is definitely weird though. Toy Machine isn't really a team that has done things like this over the years. This is way more up Element, Birdhouse and Wet Willy Era World's ally.

It’ll never be as bad as two-man Toy Machine with Ed and Austin Stephens. Or when Caldwell Berry was on.
Also Blake Carpenter is sick enough to make even Sk8Mafia likable.

please don't compare Kader to this park ranger. I'm sure his skate coach is proud tho.

As a long time Toy fan, this current era is...heartbreaking. But they kinda lost me when they continued to throw money at Josh Harmony while letting J-Lay go.
J-Lay at his "worst" is miles above Harmony at his "prime."

He still rides 139s

I don't like seeing little kids going big at such a young age. They probably will don't have ankles or their level of skating will perish when they reach 20. I admire their level of skill at such a young age, but I don't want the hype to get me. I want to see what will happend to them, when they stop to be cute little kids throwing big stuff. This thing about talented kids scares me.

Who else has Toy Machine passed on or slept on, now? Tyshawn and Jamie Foy sat on flow, and they didn’t do anything with Jordan Taylor for years.
-
Wayyyyyy too fast
-
Red bull pro baby
-
Would still buy this kids board before Jeremy Libra’s
-
What’s the hurry to turn this kid pro? Why would Toy want a Red Bull beanie kid?
Unless Ed is a hypocrite, because Toy makes fun of corporations with their ads.
This is just weird. Toy sleeping on Tre Williams was a huge fuck up.
-
Both Toy Machine and Ed suck these days. This move is premature. Not saying CJ isnt talented and doesn’t deserve sponsorship but these kids need to be groomed and eventually they’ll turn into good pros. Look at Louie Lopez. This is wayyy to soon.
Ed is to busy with his cellphone stuck up his ass to do anything worthy of praise.
-
At least Myles got the bump to am out of this. His style is so nice!
-
If you have seen myles and cj skate in person it’s a no brainer. I’ve been to a couple toy demos here and there in passing over the past few years. CJ is next level when it comes to live skating. Him, Axel, Leo, and provost are the only dudes I’ve seen on their teams really kill it in person. Everyone else can skate well in person but they are more video skaters. I always felt toy since day 1 was known for demos, so like it’s always been a mixture of dudes who kill it in person and are good/okay on footage, dudes solely on video, and guys with a mixture of both. CJ is the most impressive in person on his best days live minus Leo, Axel, and Provost, and they are way older.
-
gross, why, who the fuck wants a cj collins board
-
maybe he’ll shut us up with the toy video dropping
-
I remember his Myspace page his dad made him, been shakin my head ever since.

There was once a guy named Steve Caballero who turned pro at the age of 16. Seemed like no one really had a problem with it aside from the people who had to skate against him.
you're right, CJ collins and Steve Cabellero turning pro are equivalent. skating is the same as it has ever been.

You literally trying to compare Caballero to every ripping 16 year old ever. Please stop. Plus that logic is part of the reason why the status of "pro" has been so watered down up to this point.

It didn't seem to work out for them business-wise. But, obviously, Louie became amazing. There have obviously been other groms who got on companies early, and grew into amazing skaters who are well-liked such as Donovan, Grant, Dylan, Tyler Bledsoe, Westgate, etc. Obviously, though, there are also the David Loy's, Chaz Ortiz's of the world.
-
Remember when everyone talked shit on flip for their team full of children?
Louie, Daveed, Curren, Luan have all proven there worth/relevance to pro skating imo. They all skated contests well, and also skated video parts well, and demos. That’s a fucking solid team of kids in every aspect no matter what slap shitheads have to say.

It was more that it seems they never regained the brand's popularity or relevancy even when they had Louie and Curren still on, and Louie was killing it. Regardless of how good those guys are, Flips transition built around these guys was not successful as a buisness plan. Although, a lot of brands have trouble transitioning from a legendary team to the next era.

all i know is cj’s dad quit his job to become his full time “agent” and makes more than enough as a 15 year old kid to support him. also gets paid, or at least used to, under the table from redbull. there’s gotta be some kind of law about minors riding for an energy drink company. pretty fucked though.

Yeah, this makes no sense. Organic building and cultivating talent is great. They were insanely good riders, and flip had an insanely good young past. They wanted to recreate that and it failed obviously.

This kid has a ton of big sponsors a few of them corporate, Toy Machine may have been told to turn him pro or lose him. Also now with the Olympics being a thing this could be relevant to that, he's also destroying all these contest and if he's good enough to compete with the pros it makes more sense that he's able to compete for the higher cash prizes at a pro contest. Skateboarding is in a new change over phase and the last time that happened most of your new pros were between 15-17 years old Mariano, Koston, Mike Carroll, Henry Sanchez, Danny Way, so this isn't a really crazy thing, its just a little different than it has been.
-
I don't think the main complaint is that he's young, but that he hasn't really done much outside a contest circuit and that he doesn't fit Toy Machine in the slightest.

If you didn't know, I am a pretty dark black guy (I'm very sure that alot of you are surprised). I work at Fontana Skateparks which has quite a few pros and ams roll through. One particular night CJ COLLINS was there skating with an unnamed witness. CJ Collins is the face of privilege. This new generation of pros will all come from kids who were groomed and trained to become pro skaters by there parents. Nothing wrong with that, but the way he tries to rock the beanie and attitude just comes off really fake and Justin Bieberish.

CJ is Templeton's star. With the amount of star power he has in the mainstream skateboarding industry, he'd have to lynch someone to get called out. He's gonna get a pass cause he's a kid.

We are living in the popularity contest age of skateboarding, every and any skateboarder who hits 250k followers on insta should go pro by default.
-
Kader went pro right about the time he starting showing up around the Supreme guys, right? It was a use it or lose it situation for Baker.
I’d bet this is the same sort of thing. Offers from other teams were probably coming in. Factor that in with Red Bull, kook skate dad, and actual ability and a long future if he doesn’t pile out, it makes sense to turn him pro.
From a money aspect anyway. He’s constantly on Provost and Leo’s insta. He’s at least coming up around solid dudes. Maybe the kid stands a chance.
-
If the kid is competing at a pro level in a pro contest, why should he not have a board with his name on?
CJs a little fucker for sure, but he's a little fucker that will sell plenty of boards. You'd be stupid to let him jump to another brand.
-
please don't compare Kader to this park ranger. I'm sure his skate coach is proud tho.

I follow Colllin, I don't remember anything of him, not even anything about him going pro? Maybe I just missed it.

Constantly wasn’t the right word. But he’s posted some clips of the kid when (I assume) they’re on the road.

I think most of us are aware of that. It’s just funny to see how off their followers really are. Like who’s faking the funk the most.

very true..but i think the new wave thinks likes/views/followers etc are the end all be all. You see it in these comments - oh, he the followers, he should be pro. It reminds me of the where's the fisheye clip saga...the pirate went at DP with follower count. I think plenty of skater's skaters that don't give a shit - guys like AA, dickson, manderson, daan, JJ, etc. that aren't worried about their hashtag game.
-
It's ridiculously easy to spend a few grand a month on a Chinese click farm to boost whatever you need them too, likes, clicks, reviews, etc...I know firsthand.

I'm also surprised Toy Machine (or anything out of TumYeto) is still a thing in this day and age...moreso for Foundation...who the fuck is buying those boards?

I thought DP meant Duane Peters, which also made sense because his hashtag game is incredibly dedicated.
Toy machine been sus ever since templeton made it a point to argue and defend Josh Harmony’s support of Donald Trump in their IG comments
