Premieres tomorrow
(https://i.imgur.com/YiUDYny.png)
I predict 10 minutes of insanity ;)

goddammit i just bought hockey tickets. i woulda gone to this!
-
HYPED!
-
Can’t wait!
-
if it was just the clips of what was in the interview it would be enough to give him SOTY. Its crazy hes alive and walking around still with his whole body in tact. He can literally die on every spot he skates.
-
Are they going to release in the web tomorrow too?
-
christ on a cross yes
my palms are already sweating
-
that he went back to the carwash deserves soty in itself... hoping for duffy questionable vibes when i see his part! can t wait!!
-
When you have Fat Tire sponsor your video premiere you know it's legit
-
Bout to drop like a bomb. I don't even want to read any reviews first, gimme it raw straight to my veins.
-
There better be some mirrored-line poems in this mother fucker.
-
If he wasn’t 5 ft tall none of his tricks would look gnar.
-

Yeah he does a switch flip into the carwash right after the regular kickflip.
-
really hoping for 20+ pages of bitching about the editing and song choice
-

Oh, OK
-

Let's get it done before the premier.

If he wasn’t 5 ft tall none of his tricks would look gnar.
I highly disagree here. He could be my height (6'2) and everything would still be fucked up. Size (height in this case) don't matter in this equation.
-
Aww yea see you fuckers there!
-
this part will be thrasher as fuck and most likely un watchable

Actually the two gnarly factors are really small dudes and really tall dudes, just look a duffman for example, guy looks like he's tiptoeing on the board and still using maximum strength. Guys average sized are the ones that look less gnarly, either way, Milton would be gnarly no matter the height.

you really think that kickflip into the bank is only impressive because of his size? did i understand that correctly?

Exactly. There seems to be a correlation between how enjoyable one's footage is and their stature. Not just the fluidity of their body movements.
-
That edit of 2019 instagram clips was insane. Cant wait to see what he's holding back for this part.

Seems like these videos show up online about a week after the premiere event.

They had the Dew games in SF for like a couple of years running way back. They had that downhill contest which surprisingly a lot of skaters did that I wouldn't have expected like Zered, Manny Santiago and some others. But that was the first I ever heard and seen of Milton. I shot this photo and no one was hitting this thing aside from Curren and Sheckler. He fucking rips this type of skating though.

Holy fucking hell that kickflip into the car wash bank was gnarly as hell! I was skeptical but fucking SOTY for sure.
-
aight so suciu and Milton are basically the only two SOTY candidates cuz no one is gonna out tech Suciu, and no one is gonna out gnar Milton. This puts thrasher in a very tough predicament though, Mark is from the bay and essentially the Rodney Mullen of street, this has precedent with vov, but that’s the only one, Mark is the only one at vovs transcendence tho. Also it’s not like Mark didn’t fucking get buck as shit and do a bunch of shit for thrasher this year. Milton on the other hand is a fucking animal and like holy fucking shit, and the gnarliness connection to Phelper(Mark has this too) was high.

To be honest the only way I remember it being determined doesn't apply anymore. Which was basically whoever Phelps thought ripped the most in one year, the criteria was never that consistent.
Also, that kickflip looks nuts, can't wait for the full part.

Has anyone here seen him skate in person?
yea, he skates faaaaast. incredibly talented.
as for the part, it's heavy. lots of really wild spots. the building kickflip in is on another level (different than the carwash). as well as the ollies / tricks into steep banks. the wallride on the bridge back into the ditch is rad. boardslide down a rail where you have to come out sideways or you will run into another rail.

I was in Argentina in 2011 and got to skate at this park just outside Buenos Aires during a Quiksilver demo. In hindsight the lineup was incredible, Jake Johnson, Alex Olson, Reese Forbes, Danny Garcia lots more. There was this local kid just absolutely destroying everything in sight. I remember him kickflip fs lipsliding the biggest rail in the park and then kickflip fs noseblunting it next try. Ten minutes later he was in the bowl skating like a pin ball going so fast. Had no idea who he was at the time but it was Milton. He’s been killing it for a LOOOOONG time

Imagine if Daveed’s part had music more like this... I’m not saying he’s anywhere near this level but that part would have been so much more watchable. Ty Segall has been done to death in recent years but this one worked out perfectly imo

Holy fuck, it's a no brainer part, got the feeling that he could get seriously hurt in almost every trick. The carwash flip was perfect.

Fuck that was insane. He'll get SOTY for that. Glad it wasn't 3 mins long.
That spot on the train tracks was all over the web a few weeks back.
-
Wow. Wobbles on basically every landing yet somehow still holds on; so very rad.
Suciu’s skating is more my cup of tea and I enjoy Verso more as a part but this shit is undeniable, if he doesn’t get SOTY Thrasher is no longer Thrasher.
-
Literally every clip of that part was gnarly. Every single one. SOTY for sure.
-
Oh my god! That was the hellride of all hellrides.
Didn’t realize that wallride at the end was that many stairs.
The kinked Hubba noseblunt really stood out to me, he was locked in the whole way.
-
Holy fuck.
-
SOTY for sure! No one is going to top this level of gnar
-
That part was fucked, i knew the kickflip carwash was coming but he handled that like a fucking G, that was heavy as fuck!
-
Well, that was fucked up.

No it’s not.
Ten years from now people are going to skate bigger and gnarlier stuff than Milton—that’s a stone cold fact. Whether or not you enjoy the concept of Verso is besides the point as it’s the first part of its kind. People will take ideas from it and make their own parts inspiried by it in the future but it’s a 100% unique video part.
This is just another really gnarly part. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.

that was what I expected X 10. gnarliest skateboarding ever recorded. no one will ever hit some of those spots ever again .

I think Sucui's part will be more remembered in the long run sort of like PJ's Wonderful Horrible but Milton's part is just fitting for a SOTY award.
I don't think people are going to forget the kickflip carwash clip ever.
You have it backwards. This part is going to age much better than Verso.
No it’s not.
Ten years from now people are going to skate bigger and gnarlier stuff than Milton—that’s a stone cold fact. I think you meant to say was, ten years from now every kid who grew up training on the skatepark ledge is going to be able to do every trick in Verso. Many probably can already. We will see how many of them kickflip into the car wash though. I also enjoyed Sucius part but cmon, Milton is fucking hectic. To call it "just another really gnarly part" is pretty suspect-car wash bank has been sitting in plain view for decades waiting.

Not commenting on Milton's part, but how was Suciu's part the first of it's kind? Did I miss something? If you're referring to the whole last section that was structured, that's been done before, just not exactly how he did.

Not relatable - defying death constantly
Relatable - no switch skating, big dopey smile on face after landing the ender

Name one gnarly part more than a decade old that hasn’t been outdone trick for trick? I’m not taking away anything from Milton—part is psycho, but it’ll be one upped. That’s the nature of the game.

Seriously...ask yourself how fucked you would be if you took a slam on almost anything that Milton did in this.
How fucked?
More like how dead.
No shit.... the amount of speed required for every trick alone would send me straight to Speed Wobble City, USA and my body would just fly down whatever obstacle without my board. Except the car wash kickflip, then I would end up in Pancake Town, USA

I think the point is that a gnarly part gets diminished by being one-upped, its greatness is based on it being the best things done at those spots, where as something like Verso is about more than that (the cities themselves for one).

Rodney Mullen would like to have a word with you.
As would Daewon. And like, every part from 1992.
Not sure why you’re bringing up GX or Fucktards but those videos have a lot of other types of skating and b roll aside from sheer gnarliness which is what makes them stand the test of time.
Verso ain’t the best video ever made and I’m definitely done discussing it in this thread but you’re 100% wrong saying that it won’t be remembered in a decade.

Can't remember any PRO going back to do a trick that cost them a broken leg before. That is the gnarliest thing to do.
-
SOTY. I get there is tech shit people can't do but people will try them. People are not trying most of this shit which is obvious.
-
I love how often posters double down on the idea that their personal favorite videos are everyone else's as well, and that they know what everyone in the future is going to like about the past the most. We have a lot of bonafide psychics on here I guess.
Also - both tech and gnar skating get outdone to the same extent. Silly to argue that. It's called progression.
-
Holy moly!!! I usually don't get too hyped on gnar parts, but that shit just made me shout noises out loud numerous times!
Besides what has been said that jump over the fence into that steeeeeeeep bank, was amazing! I loved how aligned he was and still landed with his back wheels first!

If someone beats Chadd for SOTY, I could see this being it
-
We got our SOTY. Mark put out a groundbreaking part but that was nothing but stoke.
The nollie bigspin heel in the tunnel surprised me, and that kickflip at the Dompierre gap was my favorite trick.
-

Well yeah, but that is only when the parts go into "the most" category. Someone like Puleo has never really been one-upped, since the appeal of his parts aren't the tricks themselves, but the idea of approaching the spots in a specific way.
I also think that Milton's part was about doing something interesting AND being gnarly, so I have a good feeling for its future.

He looked so happy riding away from the car wash. He seems like he would be cool to hang out with. Suiciu’s part was great but he’s hardly having fun and comes off as an insupportable prick in most cases.. Soty
And whoever said that dumb shit about yeah right being way more watchable than dying to live is crazy.

Good god it looked like his board was going to explode on every trick. By the time he did the gap to lip slide I had forgotten about the kick flip and it had kinda after black hammer effect.

Fuuuucked!! Gnarliest skating every possible way, not just kinked rails
Love how he always tries to stay on the board after every trick for as long as possible. Makes it feel more like skating and less like just stunts if that makes sense
Also the way he just tapped the end of the rail on kickflip board and lip is so sick
SOTY!

But I honest don't know the rules with web parts. Maybe nothing has staying power anymore.
Here's the thing: seeing a board flip around a bunch of times in increasingly unlikely ways before someone lands on it and rides away is definitely surprising, but in the end you're watching someone at the top of their form in exquisite control and the emotional stakes are pretty low. I think Verso is an intensely self-conscious, but still good demonstration of how tech skating is basically just like composition, where it's the order and interplay of the components of a line that really come through. But, like stuff you read, it's hard to remember exactly what those parts "say" with their composition unless something about it connects deeply with you on an emotional level. Like all subtle forms of self-expression, it's a finicky thing.
This part is scary. It doesn't make you think; it makes your balls and asshole bunch up the entire time you're watching it. It makes your eyes bug out. It made me laugh out loud in public a few times. Unlike the impeccably crafted short story that you didn't really get into (Verso), you'll never forget the time you saw the dude on a motorcycle doing 70 slide between the wheels under a semi trailer so he didn't get fucking pulped against the side (this). The reason why all of these clips were under such tight wraps is pretty obvious, and it's because this part is all about that first impact, the shock of seeing catastrophe after catastrophe narrowly averted. This is about seeing truly unbelievable things, and forcing yourself to believe it until that's your world. Then the whole thing starts again the next time someone does something almost impossible to believe even after "ˇDEMOLICIÓN!" In the end, we should be glad parts like this don't have staying power, or else no one would ever top them and we'd be like "skating sucks now, people are just doing the same old shit."

Safe to say both skaters have raised the bar in their respective fields. Most the precise skater Vs.most reckless. I have been rooting for Mark this year but the clip of Milton smiling after landing the historic kickflip at the car wash has put me on the fence.
Marks Verso part is so clean. Hard tricks, spots around the world, and zero tic tac landings. Im sure he redid tricks that were landed sloppy. I can see why Milton didnt redo some of the baker makers he chucked out. It would seal it for me if mark was on record this year doing a sick frontside air and a grind over a Deathbox, but I understand why those tricks wouldnt fit in the Verso part. I want Mark to break free from the notion that he "isnt Thrasher enough" to win this award. I get that Mark has a softer image, but how many people here really care about protecting Thrashers gnar boy hesh pants image? A nice grind on real pool blocks might help people think Mark is tough enough to be soty.
The car wash kickflip is historic because of who skated it in the past. And that kickflip was the cleanest trick he did in the whole video. Also the gap to lipslide on the double set that Jamie Thomas and Stacy Lowery ollied is insane. I doubt these two tricks will ever be one upped. I feel like he could have only done those two things this year and still been a top SOTY contender. I also feel like Milton is extra gnarly because he doesnt seem that skilled. Baekkel is about as gnarly as Milton, but Baekkel is more skilled imo. I hate the way Milton kickflips way higher than he needs to when doing a flip into a trick. Anyway Miltons kickflip is in the history book already. We dont need to wait ten years to know that. Marks Verso part will probably age well but its still undetermined how well.
Also Im inclined to think that Milton is a shoe-in already simply because thrasher has made the Argentina flag shirt for him. What would they put on marks shirt, some latte art? Not very Thrasher, kid needs a forearm tat or something
-
Nothing wrong with Verso. Sick part. Why would you have to explain your part when in reality you just tried to put out the best part you could and one that you'd be proud of. Adding some poetic spin doesn't change that.
-
Fuuuucked!! Gnarliest skating every possible way, not just kinked rails
Love how he always tries to stay on the board after every trick for as long as possible. Makes it feel more like skating and less like just stunts if that makes sense
Also the way he just tapped the end of the rail on kickflip board and lip is so sick
SOTY!
Totally, noticing little things like how he'll pop a quick kickflip over a gap just to keep the skating going is one of the most exciting things about him.

Whether or not you enjoy the concept of Verso is besides the point as it’s the first part of its kind. People will take ideas from it and make their own parts inspiried by it in the future but it’s a 100% unique video part.
This is just another really gnarly part. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.
For real. No one has stepped to that in years! Besides Dollin flinging his pickled body into it. But Jesus that thing is so fucked.
It is so fucked. And the ollie over the rail into the velodrome looking bank might be even more fucked than that.
-
I bet ya Rhino threw that security guard like a lawnmower at Home Depot so Milton could get that kickflip down the Dompierre gap.
Rhino is such a kenny. I loved Verso, this kid deserves it no doubt this year and with that Phelps into it must be in the bag. The financial rewards SOTY will bring throughout his career hopefully provides most or all of his family with a whole new life experience.
-
What's crazy is that he does this jaw-dropping stuff with a good style. God damn, that was great.

I just saw it in person a couple weeks ago and it is indeed spectacularly fucked. Looking at it from the bottom is bad enough, imagining what it looks like from the roof is mind bending. The big blue bank at least had a smoothed-out transition at the bottom, the car wash is like a straight 105 degree angle between the bank and the flat of the sidewalk. The extreme jarring of going from the bank to the sidewalk at that speed is why Gonz got a raspberry on half his face when he tried it from the roof. Both are gnarly, but the flip into the car wash is the kind of trick that happens about once a decade.

Also the gap to lipslide on the double set that Jamie Thomas and Stacy Lowery ollied is insane.
Ummmm, what?! Chris Lambert is the only person to roll away from that set, with a broken tail.

I almost hope they don't release a rough cut of this. Not sure I want to see the slams he must have taken.

Holy shit, definitely SOTY. I like Mark's part a whole lot but honestly think that his planned mirroring is neat and that's it, nothing revelatory at all. Totally. To me, a video part is really classic when there's tricks like this in addition to the "known" tricks (e.g. Duffy's b/s smith through the kinked rail in addition to the 5050 and back lip in the rain).
Of course he's SOTY. He's been destroying it for so long, like the b/s 180 down that 21-stair over 7 years ago. He's just been steadily killing it since then.
Only minor complaint about this part was the odd music choice in the credits, but who cares.

Milton vs Mark argument is like Metallica vs Bob Dylan
Metallica vs Cap N Jazz maybe
All the Suciu chatter in this thread is kinda turning me of of ever going back and revisiting Verso - I'm just not "smart" enough to "get it". The dude read Infinite Jest and decided he wanted to make a self-important "conceptual" skate part. He executed it very well but fuck man, some people are acting like he solved the Reimann Hypothesis or some shit. Yeah obviously the dude is extraordinary at skating and his part was dope, but he took robot skating and added "style" and "a concept" to it. We get it. The parts aren't even comparable minus the fact that they were both done using a skateboard. But everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I guess I just prefer Milton's type of skating to that of M.C. Escherciu.
With that being said, this shit fucking goes off like a bomb. As someone else mentioned in this thread, I laughed out loud multiple times at the absurdity of the shit being done. Unreal spots and execution. Him almost getting hit by the train was crazy.

Yeah, If I would pick someone to contend with Milton it would be Kevin Baekkel, for sure, he's the only one that compares (Sorry, Daveed). But obviously Milton outgnar'd everyone this year, plus he's been in all the Thrasher Hellride whatever tours, SOTY is already his.

The only thing that could really sway it Sucui's way imo, is that Milton is so obviously the "SOTY" formula for Thrasher that maybe they'd say, "we're tired of just playing the hits" and go for something different.

I said it in another thread, but I think if it was any other year the comp between the two were closer. But in the first post phelper year, they're gonna give it to a phelper type guy. Milton is the front runner easily. Maybe Kader can steal it if his Baker 4 part is nutty enough.

Yep anyone suggesting that Thrasher would prioritise Succiu over Milton ain't all there. Mark wrote an essay, developed a part around a poem and spent over a month trying to film his ender on an ankle high ledge. Milton kickflipped into the carwash and did several other equally gnarly things that have been mentioned by others in this thread.
Even if I appreciate Tiago more, I can acknowledge that SOTY is more black and white this year than any other year I can remember
-
Suicu is Transworld and Milton is Thrasher, and soty is thrashers award so he'll get it of course. Doesn't mean he is/was a better skater this year. One thing suicu is right about is that skating is art, and art is subjective. As for Tiago he's my personal favorite current skater but like I said before Milton is just more Thrasher, and his part was definitely gnarliest of the year.

I should start by stating that I am not a fan of Suciu's skating in the slightest (dry as a desert, regardless of technical accomplishment. Also: terrible outfits) or of his recommended reading lists, but...
The thing people are talking about, that perhaps you guys have missed, or mis-read, and I'm really trying not to sound like a total condescending dickhead here (somewhat appropriate when discussing Suciu, but still,) is that the final part of Verso is structured in the same way a poem is structured. It's not about mirrored lines, it's about the order and repetition of certain tricks; the rotations of the board and the direction of travel throughout that last section that mirrors not the tricks but the way in which certain types of poems are constructed.
Which, at the very least, is original as fuck.
(You can Google around or go deep in the Verso thread on here to have the exact tricks highlighted and explained as it relates to poetry. I'm not gonna get into the specifics for you.)
Did it work? Maybe. Did making it mean that most people missed the point or didn't give a shit? Probably. Should you be admired for trying something not only new but also incredibly complicated and technical, where failure to land a certain trick ruins the entirety of the part and months of work, all to achieve a goal most people won't care about, while simultaneously heaping pressure and expectation on yourself and from the whole of the internet skateboard community in the meantime? I dunno. Probably. But also probably not.
Whatever it is, it's definitely not the kind of thing Thrasher Magazine usually give awards for, so at least we can all agree on that.
Did I care about Milton's part? Not really. Do I think it's insane and thoroughly deserving of winning SOTY? Who cares what I think.

I hear you but I'm saying exactly that the misconception someone wouldn't be able to "get this" is the issue. If he structured his lines around the genome of some plant or around a mathematical theorem it'd be no different, NEAT but not revelatory. People put lots and lots of thought into their parts, simply because his thought was centered more around traditional academics doesn't, to me, evoke the same sort of "pushing skateboarding" feeling that people seem to be attributing to it. Milton however raised the bar albeit with only some tricks, but still created standout content representing an area of the world in which coming up in American based skating is incredibly difficult.

"Mirror lines" is basically shorthand for "picking tricks for a line with a definite structure in mind," but your point is well taken that Suciu was attempting something extremely subtle. But the point remains: more people want to scream about a dude almost getting hit by a train or jumping off a bunch of roofs and ending up being okay than want to nod sagely at assonant skateboarding by a dude who does everything he can to remind people about how dumb he thinks most skateboarding is.

That would be pretty off-putting. Who gets inspired to go out and skate the parking lot after this?
Imagine being an up and coming young am seeing this....so what, people are skating stuff that could literally kill them now? Fuck that better get my real estate license.
Different things get different people stoked.
When I started skating I would watch thrill of it all and it got me stoked to go skate and I was probably just skating curbs and ollieing a 3 set but Ellington’s part , Jamie , and Lopez all got me pumped to go outside and get wild to The extent of my ability. I understand maybe it’s just different generations of skating or different types of people but stuff like this always got me stoked. Thrill of it all did more for me to go out and skate and push myself than Daewon and Rodney ever did.
Not saying I’m right and you’re wrong but different people get stoked on different things and what you find off putting to a kid may get a different kid stoked.

Incredible. The nerve required to go back to the spot where you basically sheered your leg in two previously. The same spot we all watched Dollin nearly explode his head; one he was wearing some burly leather jacket for due to the abrasing factor alone.
Such lust for life in his skating. Like others said, his tendency to keep pushing, keep rolling, etc. after the trick is pretty fun watching.
Does anyone know what "SMOOOOOKES" is? He said it at the beginning and saw it written on his board. Is this the new extend it, essential, chickenbonenowison-type annoying catchphrase?

It's in the article published on Thrasher's website yesterday:
" English lessons were an added benefit once he started jumping in the Creature van. His catchphrase “Smoookes!” comes from Peter Smolik, in a roundabout way. “Gravette told a story about how he was on a trip with Peter Smolik and the only thing he’d spend his per diem on was cigarettes. Gravette would yell, ‘Smoookes!’ from the back of the van. When I got on Creature I didn’t speak English at all and we were smoking weed all day. So it was the only thing I was able to say, like, Smoookes!” Milton explains, “But smoking, it’s not that I’m proud of it, it’s just the way that it is. I like to smoke. I don’t want my daughter to smoke, I don’t like the smell of cigarettes either, but I love weed. Yeah, so we were screaming it. It was almost my first word of English.” "

First time I heard of him was 2014 with his creature part and I was blown away, since then his footage has been mind blowing.
Ive watched this 3 times now and still can't comprehend the majority of the tricks, its as if breaking his leg didn't take away any ability to take drops.
When was his last full part the creature video?
He pretty much had a full part in both the creature tour video and nor smokes video with Kevin beakkel as well.

THIS !
Suciu's part was mind blowing, Tiago's wasn't less incredible and the dude has been everywhere this year and this mattered at a point in the past but whatever ...
someone here said that SOTY has never been so easy to choose and it's hard not to agree
I totally disagree. I can remember a lot of years where I thought it was pretty damn clear who was going to win. Arto, Apples, GT, Ishod, Wes, Silas, even Leo. I think this year is much harder than most tbh. It might be because I am a bit indifferent in regards to the two main contenders this year.

But Milton's part was better.
I watched Verso again today and it really is impeccable, surpassingly technical skateboarding. With that out of the way, I'll just point out that I said "most skateboarding," not "skateboarding in general." Seems clear enough that the dude likes skateboarding most when he can pretend it's high culture (which it isn't and will never be, come on), and that sort of comes through. I am not putting Suciu's abilities down at all, just his incredibly immature need to fuse all of his many erudite interests and refined tastes together into one activity that predominately involves chucking a wheeled piece of wood around with your feet. Not sure why pointing that out is pretentious instead of, uh, not actually pretentious.
In all seriousness, I am preposterously overeducated; read a couple books of history, philosophy, social science, critical theory, and so on per month; like a lot of tech skating, etc. I also love death metal (as you know). Imagine if I set out to make something that somehow encapsulated all those things the way Verso was supposed to, and tell me that isn't a recipe for some kind of bloated self-indulgence. As an aesthetic experience, apart from the skateboarding, that is exactly how I feel about Verso. It's not because the pieces are bad, it's because there are too many conceptual pieces and most of them don't fit together for anyone unless they already bought into the idea that it was something that was going to somehow "elevate" skateboarding, a thing people hit their head doing until they become prematurely senile.
Suciu did the best he could on his raw ability with a thin (ahem) pretentious concept he invented himself. That's why he's cool to the extent that he even is cool; not because of the way he noticed the semantic overlap of a "line" in skateboarding and a "line" of poetry and decided to do something that might finally prove to himself that he isn't just a dumb skater. Suciu is brilliant, but he is obviously most brilliant as a skateboarder; seriously, if he were better at anything else, he'd be the Suciu of that thing instead of the Suciu of skateboarding. I get that might disappoint him if he has intellectual ambitions, but it's the way it is. Does he think poets will start dissecting Verso as poetry or something? I just don't get how the whole concept isn't just a load of shit when the buy in is so high.
TL;DR: in everything but skating, including his intellect, Suciu is likely far more Salieri than Mozart than he and a lot of others would care to think.
-
Have a gnar My Stinky.
-
Mr Stinky words good *nod head*
-
Sucui should've gotten a STEM degree.
-
Thank you, I guess I didn't realize how much I had actually been thinking about it and probably needed to get it off my chest. I honestly really appreciate Suciu as skateboarder, but the man is almost 30 and acts like he's in the fucking Dead Poets Society.
-
Milton must be hard to film
hes so fucking hard at all times
-
I don't give a shit who else did what, rolling away from pretty much all of that shit must have felt fucking mental. It's almost like Frankie Hill and Chris Senn had a baby and only fed it energy drinks for two decades all the while educating it with nothing but Nyjah Huston footage from the future and THPS 1.

Someone gnar this immediately.

kind of interesting that milton's footage is the "unrelatable" one. almost all of those clips are super sketchy be it speed wobbles or a little shimmy on the land or whatever - what the average person skating looks like - and not suciu's where literally every trick is landed precisely. also,
milton is james bond, mark is american beauty

Here's an interesting, related point: I don't remember a single slam in Verso.

Waiting for someone to say "It didn't make me want to skate" comment.
Whether or not you enjoy the concept of Verso is besides the point as it’s the first part of its kind. People will take ideas from it and make their own parts inspiried by it in the future but it’s a 100% unique video part.
This is just another really gnarly part. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.
I think you meant, ten years from now every kid who grew up training on the skatepark ledge is going to be able to do every trick in Verso. We will see how many of them kickflip into the car wash though. I also enjoyed Sucius part but cmon, Milton is fucking hectic. To call it "just another really gnarly part" is pretty suspect-car wash bank has been sitting in plain view for decades waiting.
Name one gnarly part more than a decade old that hasn’t been outdone trick for trick? I’m not taking away anything from Milton—part is psycho, but it’ll be one upped. That’s the nature of the game.
Again whether you like the concept behind Verso or not doesn’t matter. Our boy genius Suciu wrote a poem with skate clips—the first of its kind—and people will remember that for a long time to come. The whole part, not just his last trick. No one is gonna forget the car wash kickflip, but it’s not gonna have the same staying power or rewatchability as Verso.
am i the only person that doesn't think that what mark did is as revolutionizing as people are making it out to be? interesting, yes, but I don't think I place the actual concept on such a pedestal like some of you are
Completely agree. I loved the skating and the concept was cool but revolutionary is definitely an exaggeration. Even if other skaters are inspired to make concept parts I think Verso legacy will be for what it is: a really really good tech skating part.
-
Ya not sure why people act like he changed the course of skating with his "concept". He just made one of the best parts of all time and comparing the two is dumb as hell, babies are going to cry either way.
I'd like to see the look on rhino's face is mark does drop another part though
-
Pjs whl still trumps suicu by a long shot.
But, he did cement a legacy with all the hype around this, so he achieved his goal.
-
skateboarding is not a competition. all of you arguing here about a meaningless award should get the fuck out of skateboarding
-
Okay i get it. People are trying to put Marks part against Miltons. Mark will get soty but Miltons part WAY better and im not even into watching gnar shit. EASILY.
-
skateboarding is not a competition. all of you arguing here about a meaningless award should get the fuck out of skateboarding
Bit harsh?
-
Anyone remember the clip of him kickflipping into the ditch Corey duffle Ollie into? I think it may have been on some converse Video? Should have seen then that the car wash was next.
Edit: found it.

lol that might be evne harder in some ways. he fought that carve at the bottom big time
-
I love how the Cons team is pretty mellow/ tech, then they have Milton which is the complete opposite. I can't recall his part in Purple though
-

A part of all enders only is easily as conceptual and arguably more revolutionary than a mirrored lines part.

The trips already planned. Provost, figgy, grant, dickenson and milton. That's one fuckin heavy crew right there.
It's either milton or figgy, but all those doods are claiming milton too.
I cannot imagine rolling with such a fucked up crew. They should invite suicu just to see how hed be on a soty tour with these doods hahaha

I am fully pro-suciu but that part was absolutely bonkers. So so so so so gnarly. Going that fast and gapping our that far on rails/hubbas is terrifying. How long can this guy skate like this? Seriously rolling the dice.
Also did he skate the bigger part of that kirchart gap that he stuck kf on? Maybe I’m trippin.

Not hating in the least - but I think ^that's a good example of why this part could have been cut down a bit. As a longtime filmer/editor, I'll go into some detail about why the poster who said there's some filler ISN'T wrong.
His first clip of the 360 nosegrab over the weird driveway blob was an ABD. There's repeated tricks like the kickflip wallride down a set in the start and then the bigger one later - just use the bigger one if your part is gonna end up being long. The line right after the first kickflip wallride did not need to be in there, nothing special about that. The kickflip into that big curvy roof was pretty gross, and he rode out much gnarlier banks in the part, so axe that one too. The next kickflip into the brick bank in Barcelona is also ABD if I remember correctly(though I ca't remember the skater, so I could be wrong). There's an ollie over a rail into a bank in south america that is pretty meh for him. Not a lot of filler by any means, but when your part is 10 minutes long, things like that should be taken into consideration.
Many of the clips also had plenty of room to trim a second or two off the start and end while still timing to the music, and you'd be surprised how much difference that makes to the final run time. Then there's basically 2 full minutes of B-roll after the carwash kickflip. In this age of limited attention spans, it would make more sense to edit this down to around 5 minutes or so of the best stuff.
All that said - fucking insane part all around. Dude is the ideal candidate for SOTY seeing as it's a Thrasher award.
Again - NOT HATING - Milton rules. Part was just a tad longer than it needed to be, and quicker cuts would only increase that hellride vibe.

agreed, could have been like a 4 or 5 minute part. another example is that tailside into the triple bank in barcelona, people back overcrook into that thing.
and in regards to daeweon I'm very aware of his parts and what he's done. But aside from skatemore did he really have a normal part? Like traveling the world and skating different spots and doing normal lines?
Also don't get me wrong daewon is a legend and has no reason to prove anything to anyone. I was just replying to that dude above who was trying to compare the two.

I kind of disagree with this. It's hard to stay excited for everything when decent skating is coming out pretty much on daily basis, but when the content is as exceptional as this, people have no problem paying attention.
Also, those roll aways are a huge part of what makes his skating fun to watch, so I wouldn't cut anything out

I hear ya, and I'm not a fan of the Chief's style of editing with literally no run up or roll away... I'm talking literally trimming a second or so (sometimes not even a full second) off the beginning and end of each clip. His clips had plenty of room to do that and still get the hectic roll away/holy shit I survived vibe. There's simply no need for that part to be 10 minutes long. With better editing it could have had all the same clips and been 7 minutes.
That being said - I can guarantee the run time was intentional. It's SOTY season, and a 10 minute solo part is gonna peak anyone's interest. Saying he had a 10 minute part sounds gnarlier than saying he had a 5 minute part.

Yes daewon can fakie manny flip a stump, and flip front crook a rock but he's just not out there putting out a well rounded 8(?) minute part of amazing skating, and some straight-up NBD's at real spots.
LMAO basically twenty years ago...he was exponentially ahead of everyone..

Deawon was the king of the roof gap. inspired all my friends to get trespassing tickets for skating the roof of the portables at the jr. high school
-
Thank you, I guess I didn't realize how much I had actually been thinking about it and probably needed to get it off my chest. I honestly really appreciate Suciu as skateboarder, but the man is almost 30 and acts like he's in the fucking Dead Poets Society.
So we were agreeing the whole time!? Did we just become best friends or are we still beefing?
-
you're still beefing, but even moreso now

I am fully pro-suciu but that part was absolutely bonkers. So so so so so gnarly. Going that fast and gapping our that far on rails/hubbas is terrifying. How long can this guy skate like this? Seriously rolling the dice.
Also did he skate the bigger part of that kirchart gap that he stuck kf on? Maybe I’m trippin.
Yea, JT Ollied the lower step in some video either a Zero or Welcome to Hell

Milton to filmers: "Take me somewhere I could die."
This part was totally and completely fucked.
-
I missed that MS part such a sick song choice.
-
Daewon can still kill it right now at his current age. How can you seriously think Suciu is better than him? You shouldn't even be comparing them. Plus his skating has always been artistic without him having to tell the world that it is.

Dude Rodney Mullen himself would tell you that you’re a fucking idiot. Darwin is unlike any beast there’s ever been. Suciu definitely has the skate IQ that Mullen possesses, and a much better style then Darwin, but Darwin has so much fucking talent compared to almost any skater that’s ever lived. When it comes to technical skating Mark isn’t even in the same ballpark. When it comes to gnarly skating Mark isn’t even in the same ballpark. When it comes to creativity in terms of raw tricks themselves he isn’t in the same ballpark. Darwin can also skate more things. If mark had all the other things Rodney possessed other then the skate IQ I would say u are right because Rodney is better then Darwin, but nah bra don’t even play that deca video had mark Johnson’s ender from FF done better in the middle of the part like nothin.

If you're going to completely ignore the time range you might as well claim you're pro, since most here are already better than the people that started skating in the 80s. Suciu would be (arguably) better than Daewon, but he is not even a 1/10 as relevant.

Milton will be SOTY because he was the gnarliest skater in the year of our lord 2019. Mark Suciu could never go as hard as Milton because he'd be thinking long term about his body.
And he would have to eat a banana before every insane hammer because he would be worried about his energy level.

I don't think people are going to forget the kickflip carwash clip ever.
You have it backwards. This part is going to age much better than Verso.
No it’s not.
Ten years from now people are going to skate bigger and gnarlier stuff than Milton—that’s a stone cold fact.
Jub's Blackout part is the only one I can think of.

Just like Verso, Demolicion' came with a mission statement. With all the talk about Mark sniffing his own farts, this is a little fart sniffy too if you ask me. Milton might be the only one ever to say they are actively seeking SOTY, remind me if theres others. Strategic end of the year timing for dropping the part, when was the most recent clip filmed? the very beginning clip with jake is recycled from Holy Stokes in 2016. sick part. sick he came back from a major injury and conquered the spot that took him out. Wanting SOTY is probably what c-blocked evan smith two years in a row, plus eating a dog turd didnt help.

And that's just one trick. I'm not saying he's better than milton or should win but most of your critiques of marks part are just flat out wrong.
Oh and to clarify yes, Suciu is far better than Daewon, I think Daewon would be one of the first to tell you.

Daewons ledge game was so on point at one time he was doing mach 5 fakie flip 5.0s in lines on legit ledges while most were still learning fakie 5.0s at a snailspace on curbs
I'm fully aware of what he did in a warehouse 15 years ago, daewon is a beast, I've seen his parts, I've seen the documentary and epicly later'd, I'm aware. But if you can't see the difference between the two I'm not trying to argue with you. It feels like arguing with a kid on youtube about rodney mullen being the best and this thread is about milton so its even more useless.
Although I will say where's the nollie crooks daewon? Where's the back tails? not hating..just curious, always fakie flip this, straight on noseblunt that.
If mark had all the other things Rodney possessed other then the skate IQ I would say u are right because Rodney is better then Darwin, but nah bra don’t even play that deca video had mark Johnson’s ender from FF done better in the middle of the part like nothin.
you’re the worst and I have no idea what your even going on about up there although I don’t know what mj’s ender In fully flared has to do with anything. It was gross when daewon did it and just as gross when MJ did. respect on the back tail across the trailer though, totally forgot about that. Like I said before I’m not trying to argue with every fuckface on slap about my opinion on daewon in a milton thread just replying to some other guy who mentioned it above. Daewon’s a legend, I just think sucui’s better, my opinion, relax.
If you're going to completely ignore the time range you might as well claim you're pro, since most here are already better than the people that started skating in the 80s. Suciu would be (arguably) better than Daewon, but he is not even a 1/10 as relevant.
I don’t really know what you’re even trying to say here, but I’m not debating daewons relevance...
It doesn't matter if Suciu's better than Daewon because they're producing their best stuff 15 years apart. No shit Suciu can get more tech, it's been a long fucking time since Daewon actually pushed the boundaries of skateboarding. Not even saying Suciu didn't push beyond in flipping your board a lot, just that it's really stupid to compare the two in any way.

Wanting SOTY is probably what c-blocked evan smith two years in a row, plus eating a dog turd didnt help.
if you ask me, Milton’s a bit obtuse for pasting his demolicion statement right over Suciu’s. Poor form. There’s a lotta vacant walls out there.

I think almost all the footage in Demolicion was filmed in 2019. They mention that in the Thrasher article. And I saw that first clip as a tribute to Jake phelps, I don’t think it’s meant to be viewed as a contributing clip - everyone knows that’s a few years old.

Late on the watch party but for fucks sake.
Dude looks like hes snowboarding and not in a bad way. 3/4 of the shit if not more he hits in this part in untouchable for most everyone. Those are snowboard spots. This dude kills it. Kickflip in to sunset.. that first angle.. what in the world. that was bonkers. Absoulely off the rails.

That’s a relief! No SOTY should ever know how to use an m dash.

the car wash had to be the ender--and the whole video is all stoke--but after watching this a bunch of times, his ollie in to the blue bank is my favorite shit, that i always need to rewatch a few times...because of the speed it looks like he kind of had to force his back wheels down or he'd land towards the bottom...anyway, just looks so fucking fun...and of course, bump.

Funny you mention the blue bank. It must be super frightening but it doesnt look like it the way it is filmed to me. Would have loved to see an angle from top with the filmer following so we could grasp what leap this thing actually means.

A velodrome bank is about 45 degrees, insane.
-
Imagine how less gnarly this part would’ve been if Strobeck filmed it.
He would have filmed the car wash from the top of a bus

I think ollieing into the bank straight on is way more terrifying than going in at an angle. You're going in blind.

I like how Milton is always going as fast as he can possibly go. Crazy how much bigger some of these clips look with a second angle.

That made me appreciate how gnarly the part is even more. Jesus the speed this man attacks everything with. Some of those downhill rideaways with little ollies over/up stuff were just as gnarly as the trick alone

pickle this man's brain and put it in a jar next to Alex Honnold's

Far out that was really gnarly. Watching that there was no other serious SOTY contender last year.
Boardslide that white ledge dropping off onto the highway stood out
-
So many first try fucked up things, and it's crazy the top rope Heath ollie was second try
Rhino trying so hard to attach himself to something great, I'm surprised he didn't try to make out with Milton on some of those roll aways
-
Insane how he just goes all in every time, no half steppin. Dude is so good
-
This guy's fuckin gnar gnar. That shit he did at San Dieguito on the doubleset was insane.
-
Milton is the sickest.
-
The fact that he did it all on those skinny ass Converses, makes it even more fucked up.
-
Just full fucking send the entire time. I wonder how long his body will hold up to it.
-
The spillway wallie to bomb might be the sickest part of the video for me.
As far as I know, the only other person to do it was a pro downhiller in leathers and a helmet.
Milton wallied into the fucking thing and just held on. That could have been really bad.

Even though you knows he’s fine you’re kind of holding your breath the whole time hoping he doesn’t die.
I really wish they would have showed the gap krook attempts at the second to last spot.

damn, the raw footage is even more insane.
there is a certain sound to skateboarding that upon hearing it, immediately you know the skater is going fast af. the timing between the pop and land, how long is the silence until you hear those wheels hit the ground.

well that was inspiring--what a glorious fucking brute
and this simply confirms that my favorite shit in the part is the ollie into the blue bank

That was insane. The speed he does his tricks is incredible.
I don't skate fast in the first place and seeing this makes me feel like a snail on my board.

unbeleivably gnarly!
the distance he clears on the flip front lip is nuts, basically fs flip to flat with a little board bonk on the way down.

With his speed it's probably more likely he knocks over and kills a toddler or an old lady. Either way it's both exciting and terrifying to watch.
Even though I could never do any of this stuff I can relate more to this part that some super tech Mickey Papa or Shane O'Neill part full of switch flip in flip out ledge dancing.
I guess it's because I can at least do most of the tricks he does, but of course on a totally different level.
