although I feel stupid doing this I think there is a thread missing that only deals with skate photography: techniques - camera gear - flashes - gallery - tutorials and all the stuff that we struggle with.
To get this one going: I shot with a Hasselblad 500cm for years until film got expensive and I switched back to an analog canon eos 5 with a 15mm fisheye and some ef lenses. thought this was too expensive too and bought my first digital camera recently (which broke after a week): a canon 5d mark II.
My favorite photographer is Sam Rubio, he does a lot for adidas and creates some real magic.

I bought my first DSLR in 2013 I guess. I've always been on a budget with gear and spent what I guess equivalent to 1.500 - 1.600 USD, but I guess in Denmark tech is by default more expensive than in the US.
I never did a lot of skate photography before, but these days I'm getting into it, and I want to make a zine out of the photos I collect.
Here's a photo a did recently.

Never shot skating but Sturt is my favorite. Here's a small sample of some of his iconic images. Currently I'm digging Jake Darwen.

yeah, just go on Instagram man, it's all there. NO need to discuss anything anywhere else, ever again. Instagram is LIFE.

I've always been a fan of Spike Jonze' early skate and BMX photos. My favorite style is the Slow Sync Flash nighttime skate photos. Those can be really exciting, and seems tough to really nail the technique.
I don't know, that's all I got. I don't shoot skate photos but I do have a Canon AE1 and a Pentax Spotmatic, but I use those for regular life pictures.

I'm currently using an Olympus E-M5 Mark III and I love it. The retro look is awesome and it has every feature you can think of. The thing can shoot upto 30fps.
Here are the first 2 skate photos I ever shot (Canon 7D):

And here are 2 photos of me that I shot myself using a remote timer on my Sony R1 (came out in 2005 but has an aps-c sensor and an amazing fixed Carl Zeiss T* lens):

This site is great for general flash use - https://strobist.blogspot.com
The biggest thing for skate photos and flashes for me, is getting the flash away from your camera. It'll look a lot better. You can do that with multiple flashes and wireless triggers, like pocketwizards, or with sync cords. I use this one a lot. I hold the flash out with my left hand.

Pocketwizards are a little pricey, but there are cheap alternatives on ebay.

Anybody have experience with a flash setup thats mobile? I'm not really into carrying around strobes with lightstands, so at the moment i'm just using 2 speedlites. Flash duration is kinda long though if combating direct sunlight, but honestly i don't really know how to use them.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CF7n5_Al07l/
There was a tutorial Ride way back when they had all the camera segments and one of the LA photographers showed his mobile kit, it was basically 2 small strobes and a bunch of bungee cords and he would just rig his flashes up like that. He did a recreation of the famous old Grant Brittion pic of Natas at that bank in LA that is in an alleyway. Does ride still have all their old content up?

I 've been shooting with the fuji x-series for 5 years because I spent waaay too much money on camera gear when I had a canon DSLR. Do not regret switching, even though it would be nice to have a fisheye again. Might fuck around and buy a cheap setup.

How is there not a thread of this already? Or a better design/art thread? Am I thinking SkatePerception? I'd love for the mods to make a mini SP section for this stuff so it doesn't get buried or whatever.
That Huf photo is sick. I'd also love to see the photo of Kenny Reed doing the nollie that was the poster in Static 2. I've seen the cover, the poster, and the clip that was in his part, but I'm wondering if it's just a screen capture.
Ah found it but no photo cred.

I shoot with a Olympus XA2, Pentax 67, and Fuji XT2. I'd like to shoot more film, but I've found that every time I do, I shoot with the FujiX to meter and it almost always turns out better. I like the film to feel spontaneous or journalistic.
Here's some shit from the XT2 or XT1 when I had it. I need to figure out strobes but it's something that always confuses me and it feels like a bitch to purchase this stuff. I'm getting more into insect photography lately. That shit's cool.
Does anybody else shoot with the same set ups? I'd like to learn more about the XT2, but it seems that it's not common for skateboarding, but more so for like, street photography and shit. Same with the Pentax 67, but with portraiture or studio.

Allez_Jambon.....nice snaps. What lenses are you using with the XT2? I have an XT3. I use it for mostly personal stuff but only have a 23mm which is a 35mm equivalent. Thinking about another lens and might look into the 56mm but wonder if there is something else I should look into. Mostly using it for street style photos and my daughter. I have a Canon setup that I use for mostly everything else.
-
felt kinda relieving to see a bunch of fuji shooter here. currently on hiatus after selling off my X-T2 sets but still left with a Samyang (Rokinon?) fisheye in my disposal and just having the small X100F at the moment. might be trying just shooting some tricks with it + remote strobes since X100 have some good flash sync well over 1/1000.

I picked up skating and photography again a year ago, no skate photos to share yet tho. I shot with a Canon 1000D which been with me for 10 years. Thinking about upgrading but im lost, you guys got any tips? Thoughts on the "new" mirrorless cameras?
Im familiar with canons interface so thats where i've started looking, checked out the 90D so far and the
equivalent mirrorless model.
Should we have a separate thread for gear talk?

I just moved recently, and there is this big ass skatepark in one of the neighboring cities, that I don't really like.
Well, I went there this Sunday and shot some photos with a funny local kid called Simon, that one of my friends teaches in 9th/10th grade isch.
Shot on
Canon 40d (crop sensor camera)
Peleng 8mm 3.5 (fisheye)
Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 24-70mm 2.8 mk i
Then I've got two speedlite, Canon 580EX II and Yongnou YN560-II, that I switch between for no other reason, that sometimes I just can't make one of them work.

I'll make a separate post from my recent, cuz I'd like to discuss the process of shooting, and hear how you guys approach it?
I can chip in with a couple of my own evaluations
Focus
In the beginning, I would have my skater stand still approximately where he would do his trick, auto focus on him, and then go on manual focus for shooting the photo. I would have to bother my skater every time I had moved slightly, and never felt too cool doing so.
These days, I arrange with my skater where he should do his trick. Just like point "this tile" or "this leaf", and then when I move my ass around, I can auto focus on where we would've arranged it. Sometimes I keep the shutter release half in to focus until I release, sometimes I'll focus and switch to manual focus again. I can switch between these two techniques during one session, and I've yet got to find out what's really to prefer over the other.
Light
I'll still have the skater stand where he'll make the trick, in order to set up exposure and light. Usually I'll arrange how I want my ambient light first, probably slightly under exposed, and then find out where to put the flash.
I just try out a couple of test shots to find out how much power I want the flash to unload, and I don't really use this feature were you can see if your photo is clipping. I don't care too much to what extend the exposure is perfect. I just eyeball it on the screen, and if I can't see it burn out, I'm happy.
Lens and angle
This is where I really want to put my attention, as this to me is where you really are getting into the portraying of skateboarding. It's hard really to put many words into it, except that I try to think of photos that I've seen of specific tricks, and try to re-create them, but with the certain skateboarders style in mind.
I plan on making a library of cool shots of every thinkable trick I might end up shooting as preparation. I would love to say, that I can just come up with ideas at the spot, but sometimes I feel at loss, and end up just setting up the fisheye, though I've got a feeling that a long lens could work out. I fair amount of experimentation is of course in it's place, but then there's also no reason to make mistakes that other people have all ready made.
Sum up
I do want to put some more work into getting great exposure later on, but at the moment I'm happy with my photos looking rough, clipping, having lot of noise or what not. As said, it's more important to me, to have a photo where you really get a feeling of what tricks has been presented to you.
-
What a good idea!
I don't shot digital (yet) so my methods are a bit different.
Focus
Fisheye is kinda trick but I use two methods: either way composing and looking through the finder or I just point the camera at the skater in the hope for a good composition. I focus mostly to 1m with f5.6, so most of the pics turn out sharp. With long lens I tend to fosus either way on the point of the ledge or the skater has to pose befor the picture. most of the time I focus manually.
Light
natural light: for fisheye I give it a stop or two more to portrait the skater a little bit better. with long lens I try to shoot with the sun.
flashes: my setup is the classical "V". one flash left, one flash right, sometimes a rim light. I always use a flash meter.
Lens and angle
If you ever used a hasselblad fisheye you don't want to shot anything else. In the recent months I used a regular slr a lot more, so I kinda got more creative with a 135mm lens. Most of my friends skating is "low impact", so fish is always a good method to bring in a more dramatic feeling.
Sum up
been shoting skateboarding since 20 years but still a bloody amateur. 80% of the times my methods seem to work out.
I'll add something to the list: the gear
In the last years I collected a set-up that would be hot in 1999. Hasselblad 500c/m (lenses 30mm, 50mm, 80mm, 150mm), Canon EOS 1v a 5 (15mm, 28mm, 50mm, 135mm) and a fuji tx-1/hasselblad (45mm and 90mm). I use Ilford Delta and Kodak Ektar the most.
My flash setup contains a Metz 45 and two yongnuo 560 flashes
In the next months I will change my skate setup because a) it's super heavy and b) very expensive (every time my friends bail the local lab gets 1 Euro for film and development). Right now I'm thinking about getting a Fuji x-pro 3. Quality seems good, lenses are good too and it doesn't feel too digital. I tried out the sony a7iii and felt like quitting photography all together.
-
I'm a huge fan of xpan and own one aswell. I'd love to see your TX1 shots !

These are mostly 4-5 years old ... I think I should use it more often, to get a better feeling for better angles. BW always looks good with that cam.

So I've been on a two, shit almost 3 year hiatus, since we moved to a new apartment and the area sucks for skating. But as soon as I gets warmer I'll get a new board. Meanwhile I'll try to take some photos. Here are my first attempts at skate photography.

That Nikkor 105 2.8 is a sick lens. so buttery. I used it a lot when I was a food photographer.
-
yeah, I thought that it could be something like that. I always had 50mm lenses but they seem to be a little bit too wide for skating, so I got myself a canon 135mm f2 a year ago. Took some great pictures but it's way too heavy. For the x pro fuji offers a 56mm f1.2 (about 85mm in 35mm) lens which is half the weight. 105mm seems like a perfect focal lenghts ...
Speaking of set-ups ... what would your perfect setup look like?
-
Recently bought a Fuji X-T3. My fisheye hasn't arrived yet. But do you guys have some recommendations on settings while shooting skateboarding? Currently I have the Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2,8-4 R LM OIS lens.
Cheers!
-
what I personally do is set it to f5.6 and focus to 1m. works 95% of the time.
-
Switched from a heavy bag with a Nikon d300, some lenses and flashes to just a small and cheap Fuji x-e3 and never looked back. A fuji and capture one pro is all you need. The cameras are so good by now, even the jpgs straight out of the cam are more then satisfying. And I use some of my Nikon lenses on my fuji, which is working out ok, but usually I prefer to avoid taking a heavy back to skate sessions again.
-
Cool topic. Here are some photos of mine. Haven't been taking anything recently.
Shoot with a 5d mark iv and 2 speedlights. Updating to strobes soon.
The two main lenses i use are a 15mm 2.8 and 24-70 2.8

Nice thread.
I found this while looking for a input on a Nikon d610 for skateboarding since I might want to pick up again after a 4/5 year hiatus.
Some useful tips on here and definitely some killer photos.
Maybe it's the "rona but it's itching again.
My old D300s is wasted though so I definitely need to upgrade

I totally blew this one, I was walking just now and I saw this bloke. He was sleeping or at least pretending to be. I took some photos and hid three cigarettes and ten dollars in his bed. I should have asked but I thought it would make a nice photo and I’m real bummed I blew it
I haven’t any proper training I try to go thirds and I also try to frame shit with background but I feel it hasn’t worked here there’s no depth. I hate the photo but it was such a nice thing to walk past.
Nice is relative I suppose
I’d love some constructive criticism please

I've run a D610 for several years. Shoots great photos. Low light is OK at best, especially compared to what sensors do now. And it's a tad slow fps for sequences. But for the price, it's hard to beat. There are a few photos of mine shot with it on the first page of this thread.
Also, when I quoted your post it showed your image names. Rad that you have a photo of Lenore! I used to skate with her a bunch many years ago in Colorado.

I haven't been shooting much over the past year, but an absolutely unreal spot popped up in downtown Vancouver - right smack in the middle of the epicenter of 90's street skating in the city, Bentall Center - so I went down there yesterday with Tony Ferguson to try and get a quick snap before inevitably getting kicked out. We had gone a couple weeks ago with filming a clip in mind instead, but got the boot before he could do more than a warm up size version of the same trick from the photo. Once we looked at the footage we figured it would be more of a photo spot. Really glad we went back. Love how this turned out.
Big ol thick Jordan's and a flat ass Palace deck he could barely skate. Legend.

@BugleBites looks great, what lens/body?
Nothing fancy, just my old Canon T3i and the Rokinon/Bower 8mm fisheye. I never invested in a better DSLR because my priorities were focussed on saving money to spend part of each winter in California/Arizona, and this little cam does the trick amazingly well for the price. I've got a couple film set ups that I've been shooting on for decades but the T3i is the quick and easy digital set up. I'll eventually upgrade, I just haven't been shooting digital enough recently to justify it at this point.
-
Jesus Christ, that Tony Ferguson shot is fire!
Finally said yes to a digital camera and I could not be more happy. X pro3 with a 56mm f1.2 and a 8mm samyang. I need to work on my flash game and whatnot, but it‘s very fun and rewarding so far.

Lenses for still cameras work differently than video camera lenses. Most importantly, they don’t screw on. Best you can do is screw one on over a prime lens and get shit quality pics.

I have a modified Polaroid sx-70 with a shutter speed of 1/2000 and this adapter was just released so I’d like a good fisheye for it, if such a thing exists.

I did not expect someone to be shooting on a Polaroid though, whole different ballgame. A video lens would work better in that case. Polaroids don’t shoot high quality anyway so if it will focus through the lens you should be able to get some lo-res shots. Be stoked to see what you come up with!

Lens does not work sadly, blurry through the viewfinder. Oh well. I’ll find something suitable in the meantime and post pics after.

Yup, yup! The Ultron F2. By the way, what camera do you guys use? I want to buy a new one, and I've gotta choose from these three options: the Canon Vixia R800, the AKASO Brave 7, and the GoPro Hero 9. Obviously, I would love to buy the GoPro, but man, it's 400 bucks! So, my question is as follows: is it worth the money? Also, I've got another question. A guy in my city is opening a small business, and he's gonna sell skateboards. He asked me to take some pictures of his products, and I have to edit them. Do you maybe know a good product photo editing app? Something like https://photorelive.com/services/product-photo-editing. Thanks!

Hey thanks for the feedback @Simcity. Yeah I'm using a single flash for this one, I'm still pretty new at shooting skating with flashes so any kind of feedback/tips are very welcome. Cheers! Still learning myself . Flash photography is tricky. Id recommend 2 if you can afford it. Hypersync is a life saver. Shooting with the normal flash sync speed will make you want to pull your hair out at times haha...

The basics for shooting skate shots with strobes is to underexpose the ambient light by a stop or two using your aperture and then use your strobes to expose the skater properly at the iso & fstop your camera is set to.
So, roll up to the spot and set your camera's iso and then the shutter speed to your camera's sync speed (1/250th usually if you're using a 35mm slr type). Take a meter reading using the camera's own reflective meter or a hand-held incident meter. Say you get the following: iso100, 1/250th & f8 for a 'properly' exposed shot of the spot. Now close down your aperture to f11 or f16 or more depending on how dark you want the spot to look. Of course, if you don't want to use such a small aperture then bump up your iso so you can use a larger aperture.
Next, position your strobes and power them up to expose the skater properly at f11 or f16 or whatever f-stop you have your camera set to. Having a hand-held incident/flash meter helps get this done much quicker than chimping away in-camera but that works too.
It's all a juggling act because you are trying to overcome the ambient light at the spot with the strobes but as you power your strobes up to match the exposure, the flash duration lengthens. A short flash duration is what freezes the skater in the shot without any blurring from their movement. So you need to find out what the t0.1 (t0.5 will do in a pinch) measurements of your strobe(s) are at each power setting and don't power your strobes up beyond where t0.1 is longer than 1/1000 of a second.
If you find that you have to power up your strobe past the point where the flash won't 'freeze' the skater you'll need to add more strobes to the shot or wait till the ambient light starts to fade at the spot.
I haven't shot skating in about 16 years so I may be a bit rusty but the above is how I used to shoot
https://www.instagram.com/p/BhLvhuKB9bs/ Marginal Way in 2006 or so. Shitty flatbed scan of a 35mm slide.
-
Good info. Dealing with ambient light on a sunny day will drive you insane especially when you think you got the flash to subject distance down but there is still motion blur due to the ambient light. Since I started using hypersync (meaning able to shoot past your cameras usual 1/250 sync speed, able to shoot up to 1/4000 ), definitely less headaches. It does a have a different look to it though.

Just recently bought a camera and started taking skate photos a few months ago. These are some of the first ones I've taken. I only have a fisheye lens at the moment, so all of my photos are fisheye.

Thanks for the tips @wrinkletusk and @Simcity shooting with flashes can be hella tricky but makes a photo that much richer when done properly. Will be posting more photos as I keep going at it!

Don't know why I've never posted here before. Rad stuff form everyone. Shot out to Matze too for always posting cool stuff on IG.
Just wanted to share some stuff. Last year I had a 6 month hiatus from work. So when Pier 7 opened up, I actually would just show up to take random photos. I shot was with a 700-200mm lens as if I was watching a surf event. Normally I would be across the street or on the island shooting toward the pier which gave me a cool compression of the bridge. Through a couple sessions, I was able to meet couple of pros from Chico, Rob G, Rodrigo Peterson and more and moved around more to get a better shot. All the photos were shot in natural light and heavily edited with Lightroom and Photoshop.

So general question for you guys. Last week, Chico hit me up to shoot some photos for his mini cruiser he is releasing. Kind of intimidating since I actually only shoot skate stuff for fun but couldn't pass it up.
He wanted to do a wallride which seemed easy enough. I used a Godox strobe AD300 which isn't super powerful hence the photo since it doesn't look strobed. I shot it at 1/2000 of a second at like f/5-f/6 or something like that noticed almost all my shots were blurry. Later, I did notice my VR on my lens was on. Was that causing my shots to be blurry or was it cause I only had one strobe and needed to shoot at a faster shutter? I've only used strobes for portrait work and not action.

If you were shooting at 2000th of a second that should be fast enough to freeze any motion blur, especially if a flash was used as well.
Do you mean sharp as in capturing the action or sharp as in out of focus? The shots you posted look pretty sharp to me.
What's VR (on your lens)?

I meant to say IS (Image Stabilizer). I think my Tamron calls it VR and get it mixed up. It is known to turn that off when you shoot flash or is that fine?
The ones posted were the ones I got clear. I think out of say 40 shots, about 5 were okay. Even the one I posted for IG that was wide angle was a little blurry if you pixel peep but from a far, it is fine. Just wondered what I was doing wrong.
Another lens question for people that might know. I have a Canon 5D Mark 3 and want to get a fisheye. I know Canon has the old faithful 15mm f/2.8 but also has the L-lens with the 8-15mm f/4. From my understanding, I think the 8-15mm can go to about 12mm on a full frame before the corners start to show. Taking out the factor of money, which lens would be the better fit for skating? Is it better to have a wider fisheye or do skate photos start getting pretty goofy. Usually I am partial to lenses that have a lower f-stop but if you are shooting flash, I guess that doesn't matter since you want the pens to be more closed.

There is also sigma 15mm that you might consider. I have the canon 15mm and it‘s doing the job (especially for analog photography)

I don't turn IS off on my lens (24-105) and have never read anything about it impacting sharpness. I guess on a longer lens it could have more pronounced effects?
I've got the 8-15mm canon fisheye and love it. It's a really fun lens and wish i got one years ago after using wide angle lenses most of the life. As soon as you start dropping below 15mm you start to see a little vignetting. I pretty much only shoot at 15mm but I know others (ie Matt Price) go below that and then likely crop. Fisheye can look a bit funny sometimes cropped however so I try not to do it unless necessary.
F4 on the fisheye is fine with me. I often shoot a low shutter speed with flash so am often going in the other direction.
I think from memory the 8-15mm is supposed to be a bit sharper and maybe a shorter minimum focus distance than the fixed 15mm. I was initially trying to get a 15mm but kept missing auctions on ebay so ended up with a new 8-15mm and am very happy with it.
-
I think I'll just gun for the Canon 15mm fisheye. With people moving over to mirrorless cameras, DSLR cameras and lenses have actually take a dip in price compared to before.
What about off flash setups and how you position the flashes. I know it depends on the shot, sun, composition, position of the skater etc but I am always sort of confused where to setup my flashes. Since I only have a single strobe, I tend to shoot the flash toward the skaters face. I know with other flashes, people do rim lights but I was wondering if there was a certain setup that always makes sense for overall scenarios.

Yo Fongstarr,
I’m digging those Chico shots, and the long lens shots from the Pier.
I’d love to know if your blurryness on the wall ride shots were motion blur, or focus trouble.
What camera did you shoot those with?
My initial thought is that most SLRs flash synch at 1/250. So flash combined with 1/2000 might be the trouble. Although someone pointed out that 1/2000 should freeze most action, especially a wallride.
Also to consider is flash duration. I’m not familiar with that Godox. If your shutter is faster than the flash duration, you are missing out on the light from your flash.
As for flash position, the tried and true is to make a triangle with your lights and subject. With one light being lower in power. With a single flash you can count the sun as one of your lights and flash as the other. I like your idea to highlight a skater’s face. You could also use your one flash to fill in pesky shadows.
Have you ever checked the strobist? Good lighting advice over there. https://strobist.blogspot.com/?m=1

Hmmm....haven't though of that. To be honest I am not sure about the flash duration. I just put the strobe on high speed sync and set the power to full. I shot the photos with Canon 5D Mark 3 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 ii. It was overcast that day so I didn't expect my strobe to do much especially since shooting on HSS sync drops your flash power down. Just wanted to fill some shadows which I am not even sure if it did.
I guess I'll just do some practice shots on my daughter and have her run around and see what is going on. Could be me just being a little shaky with me holding the lens too. I sort of wish I could even prop my camera and lens on a tripod to just make sure there was no shake but I really didn't have the extra time to do it.
Thanks for your input with the flash setup and that link.

What focus mode do you use?
I've always just used One Shot which has worked fine for skating. I've been getting into bird photography a bit the past year. Birds are way faster, smaller and more unpredictable than skaters. It's really really challenging.
I have been experimenting with the other two modes which are supposed to be good for moving subjects. I always end up returning to One Shot as I find I end up with a higher rate of sharp photos.
I'm using a 5dii so am wondering if I need to bite the bullet and upgrade to something with newer faster focusing technology.
-
For skate shots, I set the focus with auto focus then turn it off so it stays at that point.
For birds and faster moving stuff you would probably benefit from a newer body. Seems like auto focus is one thing that actually gets improved on newer models.

Thanks for the tips. I don't know much about mirrorless cams yet so aren't really looking at that. Seems logical to get a second hand 5Div but the prices for second hand ones, many of which still have very high shutter counts, are still pretty eye-watering.

@fongstarr
Some dope shots and damn you got big time subjects. In regards to the fisheye, I have the canon 15 f2.8 and it's been great. I would be love the 8-15mm as it looks fun shooting at 12mm or lower. I see Burny Diego does it sometimes https://www.instagram.com/burnydiego/
I use 2 ad360. I use hypersync instead of hss. Look it up. You do not need to worry about flash duration if you are shooting with hss/hypersync, your shutter speed will stop the action. When you don't use hss/hypersync , that's when you need to start thinking about flash duration. I would recommend getting at least one more flash
I use the exact some technique for focusing, auto focus on subject then set it to manual. If you are changing the angle , repeat the step

Thanks man. Will definitely look up the hypersync thing. I think I remember a video oddly on Ride Channel talking about that. Will dig it up.
Ended up ironically finding a guy on Craigslist that had a practically new 15mm f/2.8 for $280 USD. Lens so far seems fine and sharp but man, that motor for the autofocus is pretty damn loud. Doesn’t really matter but still kind of surprised.
-
what I do is to use zone focussing with a fisheye, setting it manually to 1m and at least f4. that way it's usually pretty sharp.

Anyone on here recommend a good scanner for film? Mostly 35mm but if there is one that does 35 and 120 film, that would be great. I've been going to local film shops getting stuff done and I figure to invest and just get a scanner for myself to save money in the long run.
I also just looked up people "scanning" photos using a digital camera. Seems like more of an investment since i have to buy a ton of gear as well as a macro lens.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBusUV4POWk&t=32s
-
I‘m using a Epson V750, which works fine. It‘s just damn slow. Camera scanning seems to be a good option, works faster and quality is very good. You need to have a good digital workaround (I don‘t even have photoshop haha). People scan with a Fuji x system, a 35mm lens plus extension tube and it works fine.

What is the scan time to do a hi res photo? I mean I am sort of a part time film photographer and to date have only finished less than 10 rolls of film but I am so used to digital that developing and then long scan times would drive me nuts.
-
What’s your goal with the scans? Posting digitally, making larger prints? That’ll determine what you might need.
I have an old canon canoscan 9000F that is decent for stuff that’ll live in a digital space. It can scan pretty high res, but I’ve never printed from those files.
I’m part of a darkroom collective that has some impressive scanners. We have two epson flatbeds. Not sure on models. Those handled some old Kodachrome slides well. We also have a noritsu for 35mm and a imacon for larger format. Those are amazing, but not very practical for an at home setup.
I know a couple people who have run a light box and macro lens setup for scanning. A macro lens is pretty nice to have.

Back in the film days the square fisheye shots were usually made with the hasselblad 30mm fisheye.
My guess is that he uses the canon 8-15mm fisheye at 8mm on a full frame camera and then crops to 1:1 (8mm or zoomed in enough so that there is not vignetting on the 1:1 crop.

I tried 8mm on ff but its hard to compose in camera.
Got some shots but after cropping to 1:1 in LR i find it often to cut off skaters hand or landing etc.
maybe he gaff tape lcd screen to see the final 1:1 crop without vigneting and then you have a better idea how to compose?
My example: if i would crop to get rid of vig on the top i would cut his head of.

if its got blue sky like that thats easy af to just select it and do a content aware fill in photoshop. or even if youre using lightroom just use the spot removal brush.
also i believe oliver barton is using a nikon 10.5mm with the hood shaved off on a full frame body.

Hello guys, can somebody suggest me a camera setup to start shooting skateboarding photos? I Need advices for camera and lenses. For the camera i Wish i can get It with something like 500€. Then i Will get lenses and flashes step by step. Thank you!
-
I‘m pretty happy with my Fuji apsc setup, but you‘ll be able to get a full frame body for around 500 (canon 5d mark ii, Nikon d750 or some Sony a7). Camera should have a flash sync (x-sync) of 1/250 to freeze the object.
Canon and Nikon have a ton of good lenses (a fish is about 250 euro and 50mm about 120 euro). You might need a good tele at some point, which can be more expensive.
Flashes are another topic … I use a mix of cheap yongnuo flashes and triggers, and also an old metz ct4. That’s cheap and without Metz brick it’s pretty portable.

what’s up yall
shot some street / life photography on an old analog yashica I had years ago . had to handle some other things in life and I stopped taking photos , but I’m looking to get a dslr setup to start doing some skateboard photography .
used to have an acc on here and skateperception quite a few years ago . appreciate the last two posts and anyone sharing their insight . hope GAY and the other og folks are doing well .
apologies in advance for the washed ass questions I’m sure I’m going to ask . I don’t have an ig or social media so some of the posts come up as blank - the ones I do see in posts are all ill .
hope to get more active in here soon , just need to get a proper beginner cam and fisheye to start .
peace

Thanks a lot! I'm looking many Infos on various sites, and i'm looking at used guaranteed photo stores in Italy. Thanks for giving me the Infos! I'm very new to photography. I do have filming setup but dont know nothing about photography. I Will take a look at those 3 models you suggested me. I didn't know that flash Sync exists and It Is so important.. i absolutely thought that synchronizing flash to camera Was the last of the problems, i mean i thought every camera Was able to easily synchronize with flashes. Obviously i Was wrong ;D...that Is an important thing to know.
Thank you for all the Infos!

Can you also suggest me a good analog camera please? My idea Was to get an analog camera! I forgot to write that in the First post. Full frame analog camera 35mm

For sure. Since there is no need to shot analog sequences anymore, you don't need a speedy motordrive. There are two possibilities for having fast x-sync: super modern autofocus (nikon f5, f6, f100, canon eos 1, minolta 9xi) or semi mechanical and manual (nikon fm3a, nikon fe2). I have a canon eos 5 with a 1/180 sync since 20 years, but if I would start from scratch I'd buy a nikon f100, it seems pretty good. you can find yongnuo flash systems for the modern nikons too which is a plus too.
X-sync seems like a obsession but it's pretty important to avoid motion blur and photograph in harsh lightning conditions. the hasselblad can do 1/500 and the results are such a joy to look at. you can hit me up instagram if you have any questions!

Finally popped my fisheye cherry with this photo of Chico. He hit me up to get a photo for his latest Chico Stix board. Took a while to get the shot just cause getting the focus and composition for me takes a little getting used to.
And I finally figure out what was wrong with my strobe last shoot. I shot the photo at 1000th of a second at full power and got motion blur but it had to do the the flash duration at full power. This was shot at 1/4 and it was tack sharp.

I have a chance this weekend to take some photos of some OG Chocolate riders which include Chico for one of his boards he is releasing. Sort of nervous about it cause most of my skate photos are always just for fun. When it is for something specific, I sort of bug out. Going to try and do some fisheye and long lens. I'll post the photos this weekend.

Best of luck my dude! Can't wait to see the photos. The best way to approach it is as if it were a casual session with your buddies. Pros are usually just regular dudes that are pretty cool (most of the time).

That's true. I think the odd thing is as much as I do shoot skate photos, it is mostly as a bystander. Most of the time I never know the skaters personally. Also shooting strobes still bug me out. There are times where I just don't get what I am doing and the flashes never work properly for what I am trying to do. And to top it off, one of the skaters that will be there I don't even think skates anymore or at least not on a consistent occasion. So I don't even know if he wants me to setup flashes to shoot him. Anyways.....hopefully I am just overthinking this stuff.

So this weekend I got to shoot photos of Chico and Gino for their collab for ChicoStix and Poets. All gear talk aside, it was a pretty cool experience but something that was different too. Meaning I have never been on a photo inspired mission but there is definitely things you have to respect from the skater as well as the filmer (iPhone filmer) as well. I wish I had all the power to get super creative on some of the shoots but it just didn't happen that way. You sort of have to shoot to to what is going on but I did get some stuff that I was happy with.
These two shots are sort of my instagram style photos. I am editing the more skate ones now and will post when done.

Yeah.....actually I am usually pretty good at catching such an obvious dodging but it was hard to see that on my computer for whatever reason (or it was late at night). So once it was posted, it was too late to fix.
It was essentially supposed to match this photo.

Actually that brings up a good question. What is the editing standards of a skateboard photo? I think or know I always go overboard on my photos. Film photos I assume was left as is but for digital, you can go crazy.

Here are all the photos if anyone wants to see them. Pretty hyped on the fisheye ones just cause as stupid as it sounds, I felt like a skateboard photographer setting up 2 strobes and setting up for the shot. Some filler photos but as a photo set for an IG lookbook, I am pretty happy with the outcome.

Shot these two yesterday. Was doing some quick product photos which turned into getting two photos real quick at EMB. My strobes are sort of showing their weakness in sun light cause the RAW files on these are hardly showing light on him. I had to push them in the edit which sort of makes it look like a natural light photo.

@Simcity........are your photos cropped in? How on earth are you getting in that close without freaking out? That is sort of my issue right now with the fisheye lens. I know the closer you are, the more dynamic the photo. Like Matt Price must literally be a foot out from the skaters to get his shots. I think he uses the 8-15mm fisheye lens too.

Bro these photos are fucking nuts!!!!!
Dunno about Simcity but I do crop my fisheye shots sometimes. There are occasions where the skater also feels uncomfortable with you being very close so cropping a shot is something that happens. Obviously the closer the better like Matt Price for example. I read that he has his lens hit like once per session at least

Yo, if you post a photo on instagram it crops it.I cant be fucked getting a resize app and make the photo look smaller than it is on instagram. Generally outside of insta I do not crop a fisheye photo. I try to get as close of possible with a fisheye. The way I approach it is do not through the viewfinder and trust the skater can actually do the trick. I have had close calls. A friend hit my hood cap before and bent it and another board nearly hit my head as I zoned out. I know Price crops his photos

Another recent one. Fisheye again. This hubba is pretty steep so had to get the shot asap and get the hell out of the way. As Gsosa mentioned there are times that the skater feels uncomfortable with the vertical fisheye right at the landing.
Fongstarr , just get right in there. The chances of hitting the lens are slim are pretty slim if you do not look through the lens and do not zone out haha... Just get the shot and move out of the way asap

I think from my last experience, I had a really hard time with my composition which made the skater skate longer when they didn't have to. I shot with live view on but once you point your camera up, you can sort of lose your position. Also at times, I do have one flash in hand which can make it also difficult. I guess I just need more practice and more muscle memory.

I was gonna say….
Pretty sure Price is using those on his insanely close shots.
-
Those filters are good but you have to make sure they are really clean and do not have any scratches on it. I remember there was an issue with the light from flashes reflecting or something. I stopped using it. It's better for filming in my opinion
@fongstarr
What I generally do is look through the viewfinder and get the skater to stand there focus on him while I also testing the lighting.Set manual then just try to replicate that angle while not looking in the viewfinder. Some test shots. You really do not want to be looking through the viewfinder fish. Surefire way to get a board to the face
-
How do you guys time your flashes for longer exposure shots, like 1/4 to 1 second shots with a flash? I think they look slightly better with the flash at the end of the exposure rather than the beginning, but that takes several tries to time right. I think my camera only has those two options: beginning or end of the open shutter.

Thanks for the input. I do pre-focus the lens first. Set it at a little bit above infinity and shooting at like f/10, I'll at least get most in focus.
Did another fisheye with Chico. The photo came out okay but man....if I showed you guys the RAW file, you'd be surprised what the before and after looked like. Generally the flash was really not in the right spot cause I had the flash in hand. It flooded most of the wall and his shoes with little flash on his face. Thankfully with a lot of shadow/highlight recovery, I was able to sell it right but if this was a film photo, this thing would have been a total failure.

I am noticing that the quality and the sharpness of my photos decreases on insta after a bit...
I like that his jumper matches the stairs/jeans match the background in the first shot and that his red hair matches the bricks in the second shot

Thanks guys, it's in the March 2023 issue the one with the cover of Emile at Burnside.
For submitting I just went to the website and saw that they had the submissions options, as well as seeing the e-mail before in the mag.
Here's what it says on the site.
Photograffiti submissions:
By sending us photos, you are giving us permission to use them in Thrasher's Photograffiti section, free of charge. The photo(s) you send may be printed in the very next magazine, a year from now, or not at all. There's no way of knowing.
Email your Photo-G submissions directly to [email protected]
The photo(s) you send should have your name, trick, location, and the photographer's name CLEARLY stated. Ideally, each digital photo file would contain the skater's name and location in the file name itself (plus the photographer's last name, too). This creates long file names, but it really helps us sort through them, make sure we print the correct info, and it'll increase the odds of your photo getting printed.

For those shooting digital, are you using dSLRs or mirrorless cameras?
I've always used dSLRs but am contemplating moving from my current Canon 5dii to a mirrorless in the hope of getting some faster sharper auto focus.
I would probably prefer to get a 5Div but they're quite expensive for how old they are now. Thinking about an r6 mirrorless if I can find one at a reasonable price.
I've never used a mirrorless before. For those that have transitioned across, how do you find using them for skating and photography more generally? Are you finding your EF lenses (for Canon users) work OK?
-
Spot focusing on the subject and then switching it to manual isnt doing the trick? I've been using the 5d mark iv for the last few. No complaints

I generally shoot with AF on which for skating works OK. The area where I'm having more difficulty is in bird photography where the subject is much smaller and less predictable

I had a 5D mark 2 and that focus system is just terrible, especially at night when shooting like concerts. You might see a significant upgrade from just that to the Mark IV but when it comes to focus systems, mirrorless is really the way to go. The catch of the mirrorless setup for say Canon is the RF lenses pair so much better then an EF lens with an adaptor that you have to upgrade almost all your equipment which costs a ton of money. I think for someone say shooting portraits, you can get away with adapting EF lenses but bird photography is literally one of the hardest things to do.
You can always rent a system to see if it is something you are looking for. I use https://www.borrowlenses.com/ at times and they are fine. I would even get the R6 first with the EF adaptor to see if that can do the trick.

Thanks for your insights. Have you found a reduced functionality using EF lenses with a mirrorless body?
I'm pretty invested in EF lenses at this point and aren't really serious enough to buy all new glass

I've only seen stuff on Youtube. I think it is okay for the most part but if you want to use the full use of the mirrorless focus system, that is where you should invest in RF lenses. I think it only matters for people that shoot that kind of stuff but bird photography is sort of one of them.

Solid advice. Thanks for the tip. The 100-400 I'm currently using for bird stuff is very heavy so I wouldn't feel too bad about replacing that one if needed

Sup gods, how do you achieve the effect. that's seen in the pics below? I'm referring to him looking like he's dissapearing or like he's fading off haha. I know it's slow shutter and flashes to freeze the subject but if anyone can specify any parameters or anything how to get that effect to look like he's fading off.

You’ve got the recipe already. Long exposure and a flash.
Make sure you’re on a tripod, I would hold my flash, start at 5.6 with maybe a 5-10 second exposure, have the skater roll through, pop that flash when they’re framed where you want, and check the results. Might need a little more time or less depending on how the background is lit. That reference photo has a lot of light in the background at his legs. That’s why it’s more ghosty there. Higher iso will give you more background light and determine your flash power. I’d try it at 100-400iso and experiment from there.
-
Kind of the same technique for this, but here I spun the camera to get all the swirls.
Iso 250, f6.3 1/4s 15mm fisheye.

Ok....general dumb questions to ask about off camera flash. I normally shoot during broad daylight. I shoot high speed sync mostly at fast shutters but if I was to shoot sundown, then I don't necessarily need to shoot at fast shutter speed right? I can do say 1/250 of a second and my strobes should freeze action no problem because that is most of the light that is being used?
And say with a Jake Darwen photo. I asked him and he said he used 4 strobes for this photo. Does that mean he doesn't have to use HSS since he overpowered the sun and can shoot at lower shutter speeds?

I’d say turn off the HSS if you’re shooting at sundown. Especially if you can get a few test shots to try it out. Depending on your flash power you should be good at that time of day.
I’d bet that Jake Darwin photo was at 1/250th. Those higher end strobes/packs will be strong enough for that in bright sun.

Thanks. Flash is connected to the camera. Click the shutter where you want to freeze actionfire the flash, then twist the camera.

This is one I got a few weeks ago after I asked about this. You can definitely get very dope results but it's also kind of hit or miss until you get the right settings.

The powerslide shot turned out rad!
You might try with different backgrounds. In your shot that one street light is brighter than everything else so becomes a bright focal point.
I like the motion of the lights. Perfect for that powerslide. If you want to match that DC shot, a tripod will help. That’ll keep your background still.
If you try more of those, I want to see some.

Sup gods, anyone know of good photography podcasts?? I want to listen to something that's actually dope with some good info to learn from (if possible) o just some good photography substance.
Visual revolution is pretty good and they have had a lot of skate photographers on there Arto, Templeton, Blabac etc
Matt Price on the Nine Club as well. Should be a good one with us photography nerds (hopefully).
Shot Chico at a new spot under the Oakland Bridge. Not really great for filming tricks but it captures really nice in photo. Finally shot close to sundown and shot at 1/200 at full power on my strobe.

First time shooting skateboarding with a fisheye IRL (done it a lot in EA Skate 😂). Need to get better at framing without looking at the camera. Using Fuji XT5, Rokinon 8mm. Setting for all of these shots are f5.6 (focus 1.5ft), ISO 1600, SS 1/200. Flash was at 1/16 +.3 power. Godox TT350F pointed a bit away from the skaters.

It is in SF. I think people are catching on to grinding that ledge and even heard someone did a smith on it and saving it for a video part.

Bit of a random question but when is the best moment to shoot a long grind on a flat ledge. First quarter, second, third, fourth?
My friend was doing a fake FS noseslide on a 14ft ledge but I couldn't figure out where to capture him. On something going downhill or over a gap then it seems more intuitive but on a flat ledge it seems a bit more tricky.

it really all depends on the trick and ledge but in this case Id say like 2nd or 3rd quarter for a single shot.
you could also, use a tripod and shoot and merge several frame into one and you could have him in all 4 quarters too. these are my recommendations but would love to read/see more!!

Anyone using Pocketwizard TT1 and TT5s? With on camera flash I can sync at 1/250th fine but with the radio triggers I can't sync faster than 1/180th without banding.
After some research I guess there's a latency with the radio signal getting sent to the remote flashes so you can't sync at 1/250th. Wonder how Blabac did it as loads of his photos are listed with 1/250th and flash (maybe it was just on camera flash)

Lots of variables for that lag. Could be the TT1 and TT5 interacting. Could be the cables you're using. Maybe even batteries with low life. Could be the camera combined with the pocket wizards.
There are lots of other gear combos that could get you that full 1/250th. Maybe all the same branded camera, transmitter, and flashes? Like all Nikon if that's what you shoot. Blabac could be using a whole profoto system. So transmitter and lights are the same brand.
I'm running Godox TT685II with their dedicated transmitter on a Nikon D610. I did the experiments from the Hammeke video on a blank wall. I get banding at 1/250th, BUT this flash set up has HSS (high speed sync). That's different than the hypersync talked about in that video. Flash technology has advanced quite a bit. With HSS turned on, I can shoot way faster shutter speeds without banding. I haven't tried much over 1/1000th. The downside to HSS is you lose flash power. So there's a tradeoff.
Maybe see if you can do HSS with your setup. Might not be possible with pocket wizards combined with the flashes you're using. Or look into getting those Godox speed lights. They're pretty affordable.

Hey yall,
I’ve been bugging friends and lurking threads trying to find this picture. It’s a dude skating a bench, I want to say concrete bench on a tiled plaza over looking what I believe is a Latin American country, with a zillion houses/buildings crammed together in the background. I’m almost certain this isn’t a photo of an American pro and I wanna say the trick is like a back tail, or something. For what it’s worth the houses/buildings are all very very colorful, like reds blues yellows.
Pls help

Tht's the one! Thanks dude.
It's really easy to do. Here's the instructions:
https://www.thrashermagazine.com/articles/photograffiti-a-gallery-of-magazine-submissions/
It takes like 3 or 4 months since sending the photos (or atleast that has been my experience). They don't notify you or anything so you have to check every month until you see it.

What are people's opinions on shooting a skater from their backside? Might get a chance to shoot a photo of someone ollieing 10 stair with a bush at the bottom but he's regular and the composition I had in mind means I'll get an ollie from his back. I can't shoot straight cause there is something in the front and if I shoot from his front side, I have to shoot fisheye and sort of miss out on the architecture that is behind him.

I'm glad I found this thread, I had no idea there was a subsection in this subforum and I've missed it for years. I've found a ton of rad IG accounts to follow now.
I'm a big time photo nerd and was a photojournalism student way back in the day before getting burned out. Now I mostly just shoot medium or large format city/landscapes, but I dabble in some 35mm street photography here and there. Home develop, home scan, etc.
Anyway...
I have a question for any of you Nikon shooters. I'm looking to upgrade my trusty D810 to something with better AF and faster burst. I'm not entirely ready to jump to the Z platform though, I'd like to keep all my lenses and just upgrade bodies. Are any of y'all shooting with a D5 and liking it?
no i don't have any skate pictures to add, most of the people i know in town are old bmx trail dogs and that's not relevant for this thread sorry pls don't hate me
-
^^^^^I am not a Nikon shooter but why not get a mirrorless and get the lens adaptor for your F-mount lenses? I think as far as autofocus, it has been proven good unless you use the native Z mount lenses.
Also to me, skate stuff doesn't rely on fast autofocus unless you are shooting like a demo or an event. If you shoot a skater, you sort of have a shot in mind and sort of just camp there until the skater gets the trick. That means you can sort of pre focus and just wait for the skater to come in frame all the time. Also if you shoot say flash, most times you are shooting at a more closed aperture which means your focus plane is just way larger and chances of getting a clear shot is high. All this is subject to change if you want a different look but I think a D810 is plenty fine for shooting skate. I currently shoot with a Canon 5D mark 3 but will go mirrorless soon.

All true, especially where flash and large depths of field are concerned, but I also spend a good chunk of time on a boat looking for whales or other marine life, where pre-focus rarely ever works out, and I've missed so many potential shots with a slow AF (at least that's what I tell myself, it's definitely not me...)
I also shoot a lot with the 16mm fisheye so AF isn't even the equation there, it's pretty much all in focus.
I don't really have any issues with the D810, and with a battery grip it lasts me all day, but I guess I feel compelled to squeeze as much performance out of the DSLR platform before it goes the way of the buffalo

I guess a D5 make sense since you shoot with a battery grip already. I think it will run you about $1K for a used one or perhaps you can rent one if you want to be for sure you want to invest in that body. At least we are in a good position where there are a lot of options in getting the right camera you are looking for. I think back in the days, there was always that one camera you needed to get in order to do burst mode or whatever. Now companies have made it easy to do alot of stuff without getting the flagship.

@Landmine thanks dude! All of these have been just with having a single flash in my hand. These just happened just skating around and thinking of a cool photo. But for something more elaborate or long lens I like using 2 flashes. Lighting the front at 45 degrees and the other or backlighting or at 45 degrees diagonally on the back side.

Nice....I didn't know you were a fellow Slap Pal. I just followed you back.
I've also been fisheyeing it as of late too like @gsosa. Started off the year just wanting to shoot my friends that I skate with on the weekends and kind of on a roll. It's been fun trying to take different compositions and styles since we only skate at a few places.

Are any of y'all shooting with a D5 and liking it?
no i don't have any skate pictures to add, most of the people i know in town are old bmx trail dogs and that's not relevant for this thread sorry pls don't hate me
I have been shooting on a nikon d5 for well over a year now. It is an absolute TANK of a camera. I absolutely love it. I shoot a lot of "professional" paintball photos and its seen some of the nastiest weather. I have been shooting more skate photos than ever right now. Autofocus on it is insane for an "older" camera. Many custom buttons that you can program on the front. If you do go for a D5 I would suggest shooting in Single Point autofocus.
Hit me up if you have any questions!

Late to the party here. But why not get a D850? It’s a meaningful upgrade to the d810 in every way. And probably the best DSLR nikon made. The battery grip should work on both and you’ll get 9fps. And 45mp sensor is great.
I have a d610 and d780. But have used a d850 for work a lot.

Agreed. From what my research and all the other stuff I have read online a d850 is superior. And Nikons like “golden” camera to own. Definitely would be interested in getting one later down the road.

I used my new flash for the first time and was pretty happy with what I could get. I'm so technically stupid when it comes to settings/flash power or whatever and the only real way I can learn is just messing around with it in person. It still took me 10 minutes to figure out how to get my flash connected for hi-speed sync.
Shoutout to Fongstarr for always being open to my elementary questions I have about flashes and lighting. He's been super helpful.
I'm also super stoked to be able to find some cool guys who are down to let me shoot photos of them despite me being some random 38 year old who reached out to them on Instagram. I really want to keep shooting more skating when I can and keep documenting the scene of the town I live in, which doesn't have a massive skate population.
Also, Im always open to critique/pointers for anyone who uses flash a lot.

These are looking good!
For those first 2 back tail photos- if you get light like that again, try shooting like the setting sun is another flash. In other words, point a flash at the skater's back side. Almost aimed at his heel that's on his tail. It'll give some definition to that side. Kind of like a rim light. The front nose down the hall way is cool too. If you want to get crazy on a photo like that, you could get some color gels for your flash. Then you can match your flash color to that sunset color.
Looks like you're in Bend? Where is that spot?! Looks amazing. I'm in Portland, but don't make it out that way very often.
Edit to add: This site is a bit old, but really helpful for some lighting basics. Lighting a skate photo is way harder than a studio. So you're already ahead of the game. https://strobist.blogspot.com
-
I appreciate the feedback! And that's a good idea about using the flash as a rim light. Down the line I might try to get a second flash to mess around with, but one right now feels a little overwhelming to me haha. But using the natural light of the sun as the main light source is a good idea.
And yup, I'm in Bend. That spot's right next to the ice rink. It's an unused bus stop and totally open to skate whenever, which is great. They use that area and parking lot in the summer when they rent out tubes for people to float the river, so it's probably not available during the busy parts of the day in summer, but most of the year it's open to skate.
-
2 flashes isn’t so bad once you start using them. Make one your key light, and the other to fill in shadows or rim light and you’re good to go.
Thanks for the spot intel!

Just saw this. Sorry.....never come in this thread as much as I should. I use Godox flashes. For the price point, they are great compared to say Profoto. I have 3 flashes total and actually like to use all three when possible but most fisheye photos, I can just use one really which I would just hold in my hand. Most of the time, I promote the AD300 strobe cause it's small and powerful enough but I have the AD600 and I swear that always gets the results that I want. I am that guy that brings way too much to the skate spot but since I do this for fun, I never worry about bring all that crap as long as it fits in my car.
I do generally position my flashes like this if possible. Of course this is all subject to change if the sun is out and acts as a light source. Most of the time my fill light is in my hand when shooting fisheye. Then I have key light my 600 watt strobe and the 300 watt as the backlight which doesn't necessarily work cause it's always not powerful enough.

I am sure people have seen this photo. Just wondering what people thought on how this was shot. I have done this double exposure shot recently but did it as two photos and composited it together. For this show, they had a light trail which you have to move the camera. How the hell did they combine two photos with light trails using a fisheye lens? It is impossible to stack photos with fisheye unless it is on a tripod.
https://www.instagram.com/p/DVK3TrMFKEx/?img_index=1
-
Looking that photo, it may have been two photos taken separately and put together. The light trails could have been added in post as where are those light sources coming from? For light trails like that there must be a source. Or it could be three separate photos. One for the scene, one for the 5050 and one for the crook. Cool shot

Those are all so rad Simcity! For all the night ones, are you doing handheld with a slightly slow shutter mixed with flashes? I really like how that the subtle blur of the city scape mixes with the sharpness of the skater. If you don't mind, what's your shutter speed on that switch crook and nose manny shot? I'm going to be experimenting shooting some night skate photos in the coming weeks and really have no idea what I'm doing, so it'll be an experiment.
-
Thank you, much appreciated
I was shooting at 1.3 second for the sw crook, the flashes stopped the action. I slightly moved the camera to distort the background
nose manual .5 of a second .
Both were hand held
So if you want this look, use the flashes to stop the action, a skater who is down to work on something and some trial and error. Hope that helps

I would guess shot on a tripod, and then pick up the whole tripod for the light trails.

Actually that's it. Double shot in a long exposure and then pick up the camera while on the tripod at the end. That makes total sense now.
Wow...SIMCITY. Those are rad photos. Shooting at night is just so cool to me and more so cause I never do it. I think the best is at blue hour like one of your photos. And got a cover! Good stuff.

There's also this guy I see at the park all the time doing these wild inverts. I reached out and asked if it was cool if I shot some photos and he was down. I had visions of shooting it on a specific isolated quarterpipe where I could use my flash for a better shot, but he felt most comfortable on this one and I wasn't going to set up flashes in a busy skatepark:

The flat bar shots turned out cool!
And yeah, kinda hectic to set up flashes at ponderosa.
At least you get a lot of sun in bend so it works for those photos. You can always do the hold a flash in your hand thing.

My first time trying my flash in daylight that wasn't a shadowed area. Wasn't really sure what I was doing. The fisheye shot I was just holding my flash above the camera and the long lens was on a tripod. The bump is very subtle, so it was a little challenging to shoot. The first photo you can't even tell there's a bump. But I'm stoked to keep meeting more people in town to skate with and keep learning how to use a flash. This guy in the photo rips and looking forward to shooting more with him soon.

Great job my guy! Both look hella good.
Honestly using a flash is not as hard as one might make it seem. I feel it's more intimidating than how hard it actually is. Obviously getting really complex is not that easy but the basics are really simple and once you lose the fear of failure you can start discovering the magic of shooting with a flash.

It's not super obvious that you're using flash so if you're happy with the exposure and light, I think that that's a big win
-
Thanks for the feedback Owen and gsosa! I was happy with the lighting on the fisheye shot, but where I had the flash on the long lens angle didn't seem like it was doing so much. It's just all trial and error at the moment for me with distance of the flash from the skater and then adjusting flash power. It's been fun, though, learning a new skill.
I shot a trick yesterday where the clouds and light were constantly changing and each shot was looking a bit different, but I'll post those later for some critique when I finish editing them.

Here's some shots from yesterday. Kind of an interesting spot to shoot at and, again, just sort of winging it with how to light it.

really enjoying those fisheye shots RCB3! the lighting and flash looks great.
i always find it a little challenging shooting fisheye + flash during the day but was able to get this of one the locals around my area. it wasnt shot in full sun, but my flash still was not powerful enough to overpower the sun and fully freeze the action.

A couple shots from the last week or two. Nothing I'm overly happy with, but I like the horizontal crooks shot. The fs board and 50-50 were some warm up shots and just standard fisheye stuff. I shot a trick I was really happy with last week, but he didn't end up landing it and doesn't want to post a bail. Bummer.

Thought I had sensor dust above his head, but when I zoomed in it was a bird way up in the sky. I had one flash behind the rock pointed up at him. And one at the top right of the image to fill in all the shadows from the sun. Used High speed sync so I could shoot a faster speed in the sunlight. 1/1250 and f10 on a nikon d780 with 16mm fisheye.

Looks sick! Is the rock bondoed so it's a smooth pop off or fully rock material? Cool spot.
-
It’s fully rock material and mostly flat. It’s set into the ground and easy to ride up it.

nice pic, my one critique is I think the flash should have come from a different angle considering it is coming in at the same angle as the sun which is kind of redundant. had the flash been in front of him, he would've been lit up more and would have a nice rim light from the sun.
-
Agreed on the flash placement. When there’s strong sunlight, especially that nice golden hour here, I treat the sun like my main flash and use my actual flashes to fill in and highlight.
It’s a very sick trick!

This is from a couple weekends ago in Astoria, OR. Looks like the whole DIY got smashed out a few days after we were there. This is a great skate feature. Cool little shop out there too called Cypress.

f/6.3, 1/1000 iso 320 on my 70-200mm. Had 2 flashes on the right side on HSS to fill in the shadows and make him pop from the background.

That thing looks super fun! And yea, we get some nice sunsets in Central Oregon. Looking forward to shooting more stuff at sunset time this summer. I'd love to get more practice in lower lighting.
