What are your favorite shaped boards which have you had the best experience with; I had a Zip Zagger 8.6 that thing was gnarly I was never able to pop tre flips or kicks flips as high as I did on that deck. Name the size of your favorite or diss why you hate shaped decks

I mostly like subtle shapes. Nothing too crazy. Maybe a square tail or early 90s inspired shape. Nice and wide in the middle but slimmer around the trucks. Anything over 9.25 and I like a nice bit of taper.

Some of my favs of the last few years:

Raney Beres Shape
Brown Bomber
CK1 Phawt/ Cardiel
Chico Big boy
Tershy Couch
Gonz Sweatpants

I really like the Prime S5 Handout shape. It’s 9.12 at the widest but rides more like an 8.5. Feels super light and has huge pop. Someone just posted one in the Setup Thread in the last day or two. If they hadn’t dried up mid-year when the drought hit, I’d probably be on another one right now. Great as a cruiser too.

The only shaped decks I’ve bought more than one of:

1) Polar surf shape
2) Krooked zip zinger
3) Quasi football shape

I love shaped decks but sometimes I feel like it’s more so because it’s a change of pace. I definitely skate better on a popsicle.

Chocolate Chico big boy: no longer around but his Krooked guest model was basically the same dimensions so when someone finally picks him up I’d imagine it will come back!

Crail love seat/ couch shape: only .25 inch width difference between them both! They seem to be happy keeping them around, and lots of people (at least in here) ride them.

Polar surf shape: will probably become my regular go to in the future even if the nose is a tad small, would also like to try Shin’s side cut shape too though!

↑ a lot of posters are going to fight you on the Dane 1 comment!

Welcome’s Chris Miller shape (or more importantly massive wheelbase) didn’t work for me, but that’s probably because I don’t skate huge bowls and haul arse. Also probably because I was coming from 7.75 inch decks...

dane 1 is the only shape that i have bought more than once.

the couch shape isnt built for my long legs. it was fun for the first session but thats about it. sub 14" wb served no advantage over 14.25 and i shouldnt have been surprised.

polar was spot on with naming the 1992 because skating it felt like i was learning to skate all over again. that year is "before my time" to say the least so i guess i wasnt supposed to get it. flatground was inconsistent at best, nonexistent at worst. swapped trucks twice with no change. whole time was a living nightmare, first board i had to hold back from focusing.

for context i grew up in the 90s/2000s when shaped boards were not too common

these are tight:

polar - 91, dane1, whatever p-shape this one was (https://i.pinimg.com/736x/53/2d/71/532d71f8faf2f28285ba2e0d77c372e4.jpg)

heroin- big egg (really i bet any egg shape id enjoy)

program had a square tail 8.8ish cruiser shaped deck that i loved and asked sieben about making again on roger

same sort of square tailed shape with a welcome was a nice ride

i had a bruicidal tendencies that was great for a cruise/slappy(https://image.rakuten.co.jp/hinodeya/cabinet/02669519/img75503545.jpg)

I had two shaped WKND decks back in the day that were very subtly shaped and both skated really well. I also skated two wildly different Welcomes, both of which I cannot remember the names of, back in like 2012-2014 that I really liked. I'm skating a shaped Thayan Costa Enjoi now that I'm loving too.

I'm not picky and I'm pretty bad at actually landing tricks so I'll skate whatever shaped boards and have a good time. I have a Polar Dane Brady egg shaped board on deck for my next set-up, which I'm stoked about.

1. Cardiel football, forever and always
2. 1992 Polar
3. Dane 1 Polar
4. Anti Hero Blue Meanie
5. Villani football
6. Crail Loveseat

I wonder if you still had a Cardiel football, you could use that to trace out and cut down other bigger boards to have the go to when no one has them any more, or until they make them again.

* Not teasing, actually serious.

i only rode one shaped board i think two years ago, and it was ok. that was a 917 alex olson asshead board. pretty much like football, ovalish shape.

tbh i'd rather ride standard popsicles. but it's cool to have a shaped beater setup.

had a few cruiser decks i sawed out the shape myself, but i guess those don't count for the purposes of this thread.

I liked the krooked dan's rig shape, and the anti hero BA shape. not really a shaped board guy but it's fun to do slappys on a big board.

still gotta try a dane1 or a 1991/1992 polar shape. probably this year.

Love:
LibTech Jamie Lynn Rat Tail 9.25 - super light, stiff and poppy.  Transition board
Anti Hero Blue Meanie 8.75 - Not much taper and skated quite popsicle like, but I liked the squared nose.  Transition board
Welcome Enenra 8.5 - not much taper, super wide nose, mellow tail.  All around board

Not so much:
Welcome Nimbus 3000 8.5 - more taper than I want on board that size. Hot rod and magic carpet. Nose a bit narrow.

On the way:
Polar 1992

I've only ever skated 2 shaped boards, one being an 8.5 Death Dave Allen "Lydia" deck that had a bit of a squarer tail and a 15" WB, the other being a Welcome Nora 8.125 on the Wicked Princess shape. Oddly, despite the disproportionate sizing between the 2 decks, I swear I had better kickflips on those two boards than I usually do - maybe squarer tails are the way forward.

I was initially skeptical as fuck of the Welcome deck but it ended up being pretty rad, my only gripe with it was that the tail was mad flat - it had some benefits, I've never really been too good at flatground and I was in the process of learning 360 shoves at the time, and the flat tail made it real easy to get a good pop/scoop for those, but I seemingly lost 360 flips whilst skating it. Probably more from hopping between random sizes and running 149s on all of em if anything.

Had the welcome Nibiru 8.88. Nice to cruise on but god damn I couldn’t get anything going with that 14.75 wheelbase. Always wanted to try the yung nibiru shape but it seems like Jordan is off and they haven’t made that shape in over a year or so...

Brown Bomber for me too.

I was so stoked on my first day when I realised I could do all my usual tricks on it, since I usually skate 8.125 ^^
The extra landing room is so nice and I love the 159s on it.

AH Cards football
Crail Couch/Loveseat
Baker/Deathwish 9.1/9.25 football
AH Brown Bomber

Skated a couple Hockey popsicles recently and loved those as well, but there is something about a football shape.

Am actually on a Nibiru shape presently, matter-o’-fact.
Picked one up on sale when I realized they might stop running it.
Love the shape, but would take it in a 14.5 WB if I had my drothers.
Maybe try the Big Bunyip? It’s 8.5 w/ 14.5WB and a reduction in length by a hair, but otherwise similar, profile-wise.

It was very similar to the Crail Loveseat/Couch, but on BBS and different kicks (same tiny-ass WB that I thought I would hate but loved).

Haven't seen them since the summer, but I would cop another if they come around.

That’s the thing though, I just can’t handle the wheelbase it’s fucking me up so badly.  I got two loveseats for Hanukkah, and I’m on one right now and I’m fucking struggling. I ride my trucks jiggly loose and that short wheelbase makes it feel so unstable it’s almost i rideable.

For whatever reason, the WB doesn't bother me in spite of me being pretty tall. I always chalked it up to the fact that those boards are longer and with a lot of flat. I skate almost exclusively curbs and flat so idk if that has anything to do with it too.

Pretty generic. Feels a lot like PS wood right out of the gate, but I'll await further testing before offering an opinion on durability.
Sure am enjoying the shape so far, though.

Thanks!  I jumped on a PS deck the other day and although it felt familiar (I rode them for years when Black Label was using them) it still feels more awkward to me than BBS, but that is just me.

All of those boards should be pretty much top tier in quality and how good they are to skate.

Went into the closet today to see what I had in there, wood wise, and realized that everything I presently have on back-up is a shaped 8.75". Seven of 'em!
All (except two) have the same 14.5" WB too. So much for variety for a while, I suppose.
Good problem to have though, since those seem to be my favorite dims of late, but still...

I think I will have to go looking, but there are a number of smaller shaped boards out there, maybe not regular stock, so more like limited numbers or special editions, but there are definitely some.

Are you meaning the slightly more squared off tails and pointed noses like some of the boards in pics above, or just anything that is not a popsicle?

There are a number of punk point shapes, egg or football shapes, then some others with more weird options within those size ranges I have seen and had before.

This.

The only reason I started riding a Dane 1 was because the handout dried up.

Both shapes are wide but skate like 8.5, with a squared off tail. Great control on shove tricks. Can’t recommend both shapes enough.

Lou knows what's up. These are the best looking shapes. I will never shut up about Lovenskate's "football" shape. It's not like others footballs, more like the shaped boards in the above picture (no drastic taper and a squared off tail). And there made out of that good wood from @pennswood  8)

I’m running an AH Blue Meanie right now, set it up as a cruiser but it’s so fun I pull it out every couple of sessions. Super skateable, plenty of nose for flip tricks.

I also just set up a Dane 1 Jr and that board looks like a lot of fun but doesn’t quite work for me. Nose too narrow/pointy for my preference.

I’ve never had a shaped Polar deck that wasn’t great. They aren’t all for me, and I’ve settled on the P9 as my current favorite (I think it’s gonna stay that way), but it’s not hype and it’s not a gimmick. They are offering something genuinely different and interesting with each shape.

I’m not usually a fan of shapes, but I decided to put a Cardiel huffer on my main setup. Took about half a session to get used to but I’m liking it now. I like how wide it is up front while still being nimble from the small tail. I do have to pay attention to my foot placement more than a popsicle though, it gets a little narrow towards the nose

Good:
Krooked Zig zagger: had about a year and a half-2 years where it's all I rode at all both with hard and soft wheels. Felt like it was good for most things, altho I def lost a bunch of nollie tricks because of the pointy nose.
Zero Garrett hill jester: this was a long while back so maybe id feel dif now but it's the only really tapered fish board I liked. Felt like I could Ollie really good on it.
Bad
Polar Aaron Herrington: soz don't know the proper name. It was maybe his first pro model I think 8.75 but super tapered. Had a square tail but felt like they cut cut the tip off a regular tail to make it square not extend out the corners on the template.

Boards I always think of getting but don't pull the trigger:
Madness 8.375, deedz 8.3 football, Cromer lil snuff, 5boro 8 inch cruiser

I recently set up a 5boro Shred Shape, mostly because I was curious about bigger/shaped boards, but I also wanted something that would be fun on the street or at the park.

Ended up leaning into the tiny wheelbase and bolting on some AF1 55s, switching between Loopholes and G-Slides depending on the terrain (both 56mm).

Best way I can describe it is like riding a bull. Highly recommend if you’re itching to try out something weird.

The only shaped board I have set up is a Tershy Couch and I don't find myself going back to it too often. I've had a Beach Bum for a year ready to go but I've never set it up. I saw one in the setups thread with some 33's, and I think it inspired me to go grab some ultra wide and tall wheels to throw on it. Most of the skating I do is ledges, manuals, and flat, and I just find the popsicles work way better for that. One thing about shaped boards is they seem to get beat up from primos etc. way easier.

Love: Klein Dream girl 8.5. Square tail, great shape and decent nose. Set it up as a cruiser with some Spitfire Soft-D wheels but ended up skating it as often as my "regular" set up.

Not a fan: Once the Dream girl felt a bit soggy switched to a Toy Machine shaped deck that was similar...but everything was off. Nose was a weird sharp taper and I never could get used to it so it's been dismantled and I'm thinking of tracking down one of those Polar shapes for the Spring (snowing and -20c today).

I had that Heroin Streetballer shape and that was the most fun shaped deck ever. I still don't understand why I liked it so much. It was a big square plank with a short nose, but for some reason it just felt amazing. It was also the only deck I ever really liked 169s on. I will probably try to turn my back-up set of 149s into a cruiser at some point and retire my 169s unless I can find a similar shape or unless Heroin drops more of that shape in the future.

I grew up skating boards that had shapes, so there is always some nostalgia/pull towards a board that looks unique. That being said, most shaped boards I’ve tried in the last 10 ish years haven’t been all that helpful, and i already struggle with skating.

Liked:

Cardiel huffer. Had 2. None of the dimensions add up to something I’d like, but that board is so good. Tried it on 169s/159s/151s. Liked em all. Maybe enjoyed the feel of 151s the most, maybe skated best on the 159s. Been too long to remember. Felt like the olden days were I could have ridden that board for 6+ months.

Lib tech Sky asymmetrical shape. This board is super good. 169/159s. Because of the construction it’s relatively light and I could still treflip. So solid for hills.

Quasi football. Real good. PS wood, on a bigger shaped board, felt excellent. Really liked the dimensions. Flipped awesome.

New Deal Siamese (I think). Had 151s. Was skating and sucking. Tried someone else’s board and everything seemed way too easy. It was bizarre. I had to really not rush out to buy the same setup. If I had it I’d hate it…probably.
Did not like:

Welcome sylph stick. Shape felt…wrong. I skate best on 7.75 boards, wanted a shaped board that had some small board dimensions. Ollies felt not impossible, but very off.

Polar 1992. Love love love the look. Couldn’t skate it. But looking down it was awesome.

Scram x assault Nolan board. Couldn’t skate it. Wish I hadn’t given it away. Stoked to have bought it. Came with extra art and was just a really dope package. So hyped on that company. Still. Don’t really skate what they skate, so don’t buy their stuff. Could not ollie this fucker. Board was from Watson and mega stiff.

Anti hero black widow. Just couldn’t skate it. Looked sick, numbers seemed right. Wasnt terrible, but wasn’t a go.

Zip zinger. Was excited. A recurring theme for me is that I want something different to look at, but am basically going to attempt my own terrible version of ‘pulling a Chico’: setting up different stuff to try the same 10 ish flatground maneuvers. If an ollie or nollie isn’t fun, I’m out. I don’t need to flip it, but I have to be able to pop.

Polar shape?. Can’t remember the number really wide nose, tapered at least 1/2” towards the back. I’ve tried to stay with current times with gear, but I have a terrible time trying to skate almost all boards that need trucks wider than 8”. This board seemed like it would be a gateway. It wasn’t.

There has to be more. I’ve definitely tried shapes. Shapes have that grass is greener vibe, could be funner, why not try it.

Back when Welcome was actually cool, I remember them making a 7.5ish punk point in pink. I’d love something like that now. Interesting shapes for 8” ish (or less 😈) boards would be a go. For probably only me. I have enjoyed skating some setups with wide trucks, but in general I haven’t noticed an advantage, other than it can feel, and certainly look, cool.
Anyways, if anyone knows of smaller shapes worth trying lemme know. Thanks and please.

Re: shaped boards…

The less I skate, the longer my breaks in between being active on board, the more I want some wild shaped shit. The setups schemes just seem so much better than they’ve turned out for me.
So far.

Maybe start off with a modern functional shape from polar/ krooked/ heroin etc

Thanks for the thought.
Most shapes are large, I prefer 8” trucks, max.
Soon I’ll need to reconsider what I think of as skateboarding, and shaped boards might be more in play at that point.
Being older/and more frail/weak, whilst still trying to flip stuff around…shapes haven’t helped with that.
I look at say…scram boards. They look amazing. I get one set it all up. Drag it down to the local shitty parking lot…and then it’s kind of like when you got the G.I. joes or transformers or whatever and instead of having them in some jungle looking play area you are in the middle of your g’ma’s couch and it looks all…not cool. I’m out there crop dusting rocket flips to dbl hot pocket and/or double primo and cursing

As I got older, I found it more just fun to have a few big shaped boards to cruise around on and use on pump tracks, more than trying to skate them as my usual board.

Normal popsicles for me are around the 8.38 to 8.5 which is perfect now, even though it used to be 8 and 8.12 for a long time.

Shaped boards I have set up are mostly in the 8.75 up to 9.5 sizes, with wider, looser trucks, big soft wheels and often DIY wheelwells or other adjustments, but I don't really ever try to skate them in the same way I skate my usual popsicles.

The effort to flip a big board is a little more, but not too much once you are used to it, but my legs are getting weaker too, so the interest in even getting some of these boards off the ground is minimal, compared to just rolling around and enjoying still being able to do that.

Having a similar concave in the cruiser boards to my normal boards definitely helps though, so the bigger boards are just an extension on my normal setups in that way, not some completely different thing that I have to skate a completely different way.

I think that has a lot to do with them being more comfortable overall too.

I start out with the best intentions. Pretty soon I’m choking back tears, and rapidly firing off nollie flip attempts, of lesser and lesser quality.

I am the problem.

Next shaped setup will probably be a zig zagger, or whatever other shaped board I think that would go ok on 8” trucks.

Ha yes totally!!!

I went through a bit of a crisis a while back and was breaking boards and throwing them around and just being a dick really, which I was not proud of at all, so I almost resigned myself to the fact that when I was tired, sore, injured or whatever I would get out the hardest board to do any tricks on and just roll around.

It used to be almost too easy to go from cruiser mode, to hey I will try this or that and soon enough I was back in the hot seat again and getting mad...

With a couple of second hand completes I just bought and built including a Dane 1, trying things on it last night at the indoor park session and realising very quickly that everything I wanted to do was just not working how I was thinking it would so just got out my normal board and had way more fun.

Sure it will work for someone, but definitely not for me.

I've recently set up my first ever shaped board and I gotta say I really like it. It's the antihero Robbie Russo "Lusso" shape. It's an 8.75×31.87×14.2 but it's 8.5 over the front trucks and 8.25 over the back. It's not too drastic of a change from a regular popsicle. It has that eggish shape to it. Really easy to flip.

Love a shaped board. My daily driver setup is always an 8.75 popsicle, but I dig a football shape when I want to mix things up.

AH Huffer
Heroin 9" symmetrical egg
Heroin 9.4" egg
Polar Football
BL Cardiel Football

does the 9.4” heroin egg feel much bigger than the others? I want that foot room

There was a time not long ago, I wanted a smaller egg shaped deck. I got one (8.1), and it sat in my stack, unused, for over a year. I gave it away a couple weeks ago.

I did get a bigger egg (Theories Nucleus shape) that was fun as hell for cruising the neighborhood. I razor tailed it and replaced it with a 8.3 flat as fuck DOA, which is also super fun to cruise on.
