There's a super fine line between acknowledging your childs pain and also acknowledging that they're hurt, but not injured. You cant have a future adult have an outburst every time they have a set back, they have to shake it off. At the same time, ya gotta say you know it doesnt feel great now.
Not sure how Senior Olson handled it, but I have a kid who skates and snowboards, so this is a regular thing around here.
-
New AO part coming soon? Alot of times these out theres lead up to something
-
dude has been on my top 5 favorite skaters since Fully Flared and I dont think anything will change that
-
namaste
-
Timeless style.
Last track was spicy.
-
i would kill for another AO part, even if its just a little footage a la swoosh. i think about his line in that once a week
-
I’m still a fan but would have loved to see this discuss more of 917. It definitely feels like it has glossed over the inconsistency with the brand that’s super obvious to everyone paying attention.

I hope so! I said the same with dgnar but he hasn’t put out a part yet!
Here’s hoping to a new dgnar and ao part

my favorite skater of all time
-
love love love to watch him skate.
But I feel like we're watching him unravel a little.
-
My man was out here looking like a Phantom Thief with those angular glasses lol.
-
Yeah, I wasn't sure to click this but whatever, I enjoyed the piece. He's a cool cat !
Also, can't get over the mess on the bedroom floor, not Namaste to have dust on the floor.
-
Got as far as watching him wiggling his diaphragm
-
Is this Thrashers' own spin on the old Epicly Later'ds? Anyways, the guy still looks good on a skateboard but I can't stand the hipster vibe.
-
He seems...kind of chill? A little surprising really. Rad to see him casually ripping in the streets in NYC.
-
kinda does look like his "unravelling", but his music is dope.
I just hope he keeps his head screwed on straight, and doesn't lose it.
... cause the dude's got some genius inside.
-
Alex, if you see this, I'll actually come round to hoover your floor if you want - those clumps of dust are giving me anxiety just thinking about them.
Also, please never say "detoxing your organs" in a serious sentence. That's literally what your kidney and liver are designed to do.
-

He totally does have something in there. I swear to god I think that there is some sort of psychological trade off for being preternaturally talented like this, though.
-
Still don't get how he hippie jumped like the side of a volleyball net or whatever.. Still sticks in my mind.

I feel like not enough is made of his creative contribution to actual tricks in skating:
backlip front 270 (girl tour vid)
front feeble revert (fully flared)
back smith to backtail (random sequence)
the modern frontside body varial and losi grind on a rail (pretty sweet)
... I wont go so far as to say he "invented" all of these but everyone started doing them after him.
Wouldn't be surprised if everyone started doing variations on that little nollie noseblunt he just did on insta

I don't think I'll ever really like him or his dad. No interview will change that. Shorty's Steve Olson is still cool, though.
-

I think he summed it up in that last section. Everyday he’s focused on something else. Can’t stick to one project and finish it.
-
Even though it's not mentioned, but you can definitely see where Cyrus is coming from when he was talking about how the lack of communication and direction at 917 made him leave. The dude is so frustratingly scatterbrained that I can see why he would forget to order boards and show up for tours.
I still like AO and want to see him succeed.

-
Definitely didn't think I'd watch Alex Olson do all that today. Guess that's why they call it the present.
-
I can relate to him in that I have so many hobbies, and can’t really focus on any for a long period of time. It can be kinda frustrating sometimes, and a lot of the time I over think it and end up not doing anything.
Thinking back on what BA was saying about him being able to skate anything well, I do feel he was kind of the starting point and showed a lot of today’s favourites that you can skate a variety of spots and skating “styles”
I also don’t understand some of his hippy jumps. I don’t know who else would be able to jump through that volleyball net without eating shit.
He also has a fine taste in automobiles.
-
He lives the way I daydream about living if I had money and didn’t have to work a job. Just investing in and fucking around with any hobby that catches my attention. Happy for him, he’s earned it by being one of the sickest skaters of all time.
-
Every time I see something with AO talking I think he could probably use a good therapist.
-
Waylon Bone does a great job with these.
Go watch the boneyard video!
-
as a long haired dude who does yoga every day i didn’t really need to watch this because it made me realize i’m a lame
-
He’s making some dangerous progress towards self fellatio from that GQ article last year.
If Alex ever gets to the point where he can suck himself off I’m afraid we may never hear from him again.
-
Missed his lecture at @rutgerslandarch, maybe someone have it recorded?
-
I wonder what 2007 Alex Olson would say about current Alex Olson.
-
The part with old videos and then Alex’s clips was very cool. Need more comparative skateture like that. Also having BA’s perspective really made this piece.
-
don't lie you'd all try to suck yourself off
-
I like that he's so openly neurotic and also that he clearly loves his dad. Alex rips and hopefully he'll put out one more skate part.
-
shouts to organ detoxification
-
This particular Out There had an Epicly Later’d vibe and I’m not mad about it.
-
i did love the part about 3D. Always wondered what happened behind the scenes on that one
-
The Boneyard Video is great and I loved those Ride Channel montages too. Dude is sick. Boneyard premier on a rainy night with a million people crammed into FTC looking at a tiny TV was pretty epic
Waylon Bone does a great job with these.

For sure but I think the idea here is that this was an ongoing theme in their relationship. Kinda predicated on it.

Really enjoyed this one.. Everything from the Out There series actually. Always a huge fan of AO despite the fact that he definitely sucks his own wee wee during a sweaty breathing sesh.

also what an odd choice on Thrasher's part. is the story that his board brand is falling apart?
-

Not for you
Edit:
Me and the homies also picked up surfing about a year ago because of covid and one of our friend's GF surfed and got us to get into it. It's super fun and rewarding once you get the hang of it.
Also, for someone who is nothing like me (white, handsome, talented, popular), a lot of the stuff he talks about is super relatable.

Post-Girl AO footy is some of the best to exist. Gino and Gonz vibes, a bit. Tailgrab nosegrind was the trick of the 917 video. I feel like Cyrus and Max were fools to leave. How much do board sponsors pay, anyway? Good riddance. Sylvain should defect from Isle and get on. That'd almost be enough. Tiago on 917 would be pretty sick.

I agree he is a bit like a modern Gino.
Quality over quantity.
I really like Max and Cyrus but Im not sure they will end up anywhere special after 917.
Could hope that Max gets on Isle and Cyrus on Hockey.
-
Do those stupid party shirts come free when you buy a surfboard or what?
-
This definitely explains the issue with keeping 917 consistent. Gotta be challenging spinning all those plates as he put it. Love AO. Hope 917 can get it's legs back under baker boys

I like Alex fine but every single take in this post is absolutely insane.
-
Call him modern Gino is a blasphemy. Some slapers are mad.
Gino helped to built a whole culture and I cant imagine 90s skatin without him, Penny or Kareem. But if AO never steped on a board, things would be the same nowadays.
I really like see Alex skatin, but his style has nothing special.

23 minutes to say so is as average as it gets if you ever need to explain "whats up with that?";D. fs feeble-ollie-fs360 with a nod from random guy walking up the same double set has been playing in my mind since 2015. Him not being afraid to be on his own or self reflect constantly might be why he's able to dable in this or that and his skating always delivered for what its worth. The odd library comment by B.A. was so on point too. If autopilot skating/thinking gets you a mansion and a few cars, he done did something right. I bet if he'd do some therapy to shape up his mind a little he'd be as hyped to skate as when he got on nike sb. finishing stuff too, for a change
-
That was really entertaining. I enjoy the Out There segments. They should do one on Alex Olson.

Hahah I forgot to comment on that. I’ll join that list. Those tools cost more than my car. Need me a nice domino.

I think the lesson here is that you have to know yourself. I'm the same way, my hobbies and tastes and interests change like every year (besides skating). but if there's a chance you're gonna be over something in a year or two, don't start a company and put a bunch of people on the team where they're going to be expecting you to pay them, communicate well, show up to premieres, or get stuff made on their behalf. if you're scatterbrained like this, you should not be running a creative enterprise where other people depend on you. IMO.
I also love AO and want him to stick around. Bianca is perfect because people aren't depending on him and he can drop stuff whenever he wants, or just stop at any time if he gets into surfing or whatever. But neglecting something so great as 917 is a massive bummer.

I think we got an alright trade-off. If Alex was fully focused on 917 it would be a very different company. He talks about how Logan took it upon himself to make the entire video and didn't even show Alex until the day of the premiere, and Alex hated it when he saw it. But he trusted Logan and we got one (and then two) of the best videos of this era.
Who knows what the company would even be like if Alex was focused on it. When they came to Australia Logan was completely running the show, it just seemed like his company. I think Logan's new brand will be more 917 than 917 was.

But real talk, what pair do I get if I need to do carpentry in the AM, but roll up look fresh in the PM? If there's a slimmer version that gets bonus points.
-
My thoughts after watching this video
1. Watching him meditate / squeezing his organs explained the strange noises my man-bun type neighbor does every morning.
2. Alex seems to change his outfits every 6 months
3. I wonder what I’ll be doing now if my dad was an extravagant pro skater from the 70s/80s
4. He’s got a fucking TR-808. I need that Nike money too !
5. He can’t concentrate on things more than two days and I can relate to him, I always want do to 10 things simultaneously.
6. He’s got a great skate style.
-
Yeah if anyone knows where to find WIP for cheap let us know. My regular Carhartt jacket fits like a bulky box.

not that I could even make this up, but there is an ad i always get for someone on etsy or something selling a tailored version of these double kneed pants and in the picture the person wearing them has them pinrolled. so my guess is that

I have a pair of black Carhartts that have looked exactly like that since about a month after I started wearing them skating. They were a factory second and cost me $30.

One of the things I really appreciate about AO, and maybe this has already been mentioned, is that he’s got both a standout frontside and backside 360 and they both look incredible. Usually a pro only has one or the other on lock I think.
-
You guys know that he's just milking it at this point, right?
Since Fully Flared.
-
idgaf I love the man.
that last song was dope
Sounds like he's influenced by Tyco and his style ...seems also like synths are getting popular again, seeing the roland 808 was pretty cool.
-

he kind of was from the very beginning

He lives the way I daydream about living if I had money and didn’t have to work a job. Just investing in and fucking around with any hobby that catches my attention. Happy for him, he’s earned it by being one of the sickest skaters of all time.

love love love to watch him skate.
But I feel like we're watching him unravel a little.
Just turning into a different version of his Dad haha
-
I just came back from the carhartt store to try on those pants and I heard people in the store talking about this video
-
I don't think there's anyone more "out there" than the insufferable Alex olson. This new episode validates why half the 917 team left. I just feel bad for max palmer staying on the team for the sole reason of pity. Must be a real headache trying to make progress when your boss is mongolian throat singing rather than working on new graphics for dead tree bodies

Still don't get how he hippie jumped like the side of a volleyball net or whatever.. Still sticks in my mind.
Hey DJ!

Anyone paying $145 for 'fashion carhartts' has lost their goddamn mind.
Nobody who actually skates buys the WIP shits. The only people who you see wearing them skating are people that get them for free. Everyone is buying non-WIP B151s for $40, or thrifts them or whatever. Then your average non-skater male fashion redditor sees a skate clip with Carhartts, looks them up, and goes to the SOHO WIP store and pays the crazy $140 artisanal price.
my theory is that its kind of the same thing with Supreme. I don't know anyone that skates in supreme personally or that would be caught dead lining up for an hour next to a bunch of middle schoolers just to get in the store. Literally the only people I see skating Supreme gear are people in videos who get it for free, which creates the illusion that they're big in skating. they're not. real people with jobs are not trying to skate in outfits worth hundreds of dollars, its too much risk.

in almost every interview the dude talks about how much he dislikes skating or just barely tolerates it. since fully flared he's probably had more years that he hates the thought of skating than years where he enjoyed it.

Timeless style.

They talk about how AO was one of the first to be skating all types of terrain in the early 2000’s. So you could very similarly argue he ushered in an expanded version of skateboarding. So things would not necessarily be the same.

Angel Ramires, Jake Ducombe, Dylan Rieder, Arto and Appleyard were pretty overal at the time and list goes on.
The only reason this guy still got these big sponsors being so unproductive : dude is white handsome guy.

Maybe you didn’t see him until 2007 but he was on Black Label, Toy and Workshop flow before getting on Girl and then going pro in 2007.
Dylan yes but Arto and Appleyard were primarily street and maybe a flip to a fakie on a quarter pipe.
The reason AO is still sponsored is because he and his skateboarding have personality and the reason why Jake Duncombe and Angel Ramirez are not.
-
but you call him an influential ATV from the early 00's.......? thats so far off if you were skating in this era
anyway his pops is every reason for his success and there's no shame in it. 917 team was dope. wish hm the best in the future.

Not sure why you think his father is responsible for his success. He got Alex some free bits from NHS when he was young, but he wouldn't have been of any help getting him on Girl, Nike, or enabling Alex to start up Bianca or 917.

Dude, who is comparing him with Ducombe or Ramirez? Are you mad? Im just saying they were overall at the same time.
I can tell you Appleyard and Arto skated in tranny better than Alex.
If yoga and surf is too cool lets put Nilton Urina and Chico Brenes in big sponsors.

Angel Ramirez and Jake Duncombe where both top tier ams/pros at some point. The reason they are not sponsored (at least at a high level) probably had more to do with the fact that they were huge piles.

Carhartt has been operating as a spectacularly successful streetwear brand in Europe for at least 20 years - I believe some Germans bought the rights to the branding......and have now exported Carhartt WiP back to the USA so our yankee friends can enjoy it too. Not sure who owns what part of each business.....

You might not see a nigga in a Supreme pink striped mohair cardigan trying to 5-0 a handrail but I see skaters wearing their cheaper stuff (the hats and tshirts) all the time.

When he started hyperventilating lol

Seems weird they filmed this mostly 3 years ago then a bit more 6 months ago.
-
I kinda dig him and what he’s doing. That said I doubt I’m the target market for either of his brands.
I think he’ll eventually settle down to 2 or 3 hobbies which will help him hone his focus, but I get it; I experimented with lots of shit back in my 20s too!
-
He also has a fine taste in automobiles.
I feel like my life AO car-fandom just went full circle seeing that van:
I'm just hyped that thing someone posted about him driving around Brooklyn in a right handed Mitsubishi van is true.

I dunno, he is of course doing very much stuff that is considered as "hipster" but I find it refreshing when skaters have hobbies and interests outside of skateboarding (or associated with skateboarding), besides stereotypcial smoking weed and playing video games
