Title: Philly vs New York
Post by: Goodcurbs on September 03, 2022, 08:22:47 AM
Gnarly! Philly skateboarders steal iconic bench from NYC’s Tompkins Square Park https://nypost.com/2022/09/03/philly-skateboarders-steal-bench-from-nycs-tompkins-square-park/. We were making jokes, like ‘What are they gonna do? Take a train down here and put it back on the train?'” Bergenfield said. “Those kids don’t know how to drive.”

I don’t think most NYC skaters are accustomed to being
around such heavy marble benches in their native suburban North Jersey and Midwestern towns.

Is this real beef or just a joke like the bronze bump to bar that ended up on a US tour. Hopefully they aren’t actually beefing over a bench.
Unrelated: ny post and their instagram is next level braidndead for a company you wouldn’t expect to be so deep fried.

Yeah. Hope it gets more and more absurd while still keeping everything light-hearted and good vibes. Would be something really dumb to take too seriously, but hilarious if people take it just seriously enough to keep it going.

I want the GX guys to somehow get the Cali one to San Francisco and do some hillbomb lines with it.

We were making jokes, like ‘What are they gonna do? Take a train down here and put it back on the train?'” Bergenfield said. “Those kids don’t know how to drive.”

Man, I kind of want some skaters to bring it in a NYC subway train to fulfill the joke... But I also know how THAT level of stupid is how we lose the bench to the cops. Gotta strike that balance.

Oh hell yes. Skateboarding needs more of this.

I’m a registered member of West Coast excellence, but in this moment I must stand with The Philly Bench Pillagers. The only team!

Plus Philadelphia has always produced better skateboarding, let’s be honest. For the sake of science allowing for exceptions, I’ll plug Tyshawn into the role making NY sparkle.

Last time I was in NYC no one would talk to me except these two guys from like CT. I was thinking that maybe it was all the Nazis and lame ass bikers who came out to see Madball and shit. What the fuck happened to nyhc. That shit would NEVER EVER HAPPEN IN BOSTON.

I definitely could tell no locals wanted to talk to me at all. They broke eye contact and threw down every time I got close.

I mean wtf tho. NYHC welcomes patch wearing scum and NYC skateboarding finally looks just like me and no Fleas get love.

I was bummed af. I'm pretty sure some kook pored something chemical af into my water too. I had horrible folliculitis and new ruined vans "skate eras" on that ruined my pinky toe.

I taught the hair head from CT how to tre flip. He said he'd been trying it for like years. Got it almost first try. After I showed him the toe off tail method.

While I was tripping on whatever I drank I saw the best looking skater I've ever seen in my life. Handsome boy was Tall dark and handsome. Head tattoos and shit. Rocking vans mini hounds tooth chef pants and a wife beater.

Make that mofo pro yesterday. That's what skating should look like.

Something tells me he is on my old trip. Having your name on product is some kook shit.

But yeah ny should not have the bench until they gulag all their 1%ers.

Back in 1998 some kids made a little makeshift skatepark at an undercover area at some run down elementary school in Portland. There was a pretty good wooden box/ledge, a flat bar, a crappy jump ramp and and a manual pad. On the top of the manual pad, some kid spray painted, in big red letters the phrase “NEW YORK SUCKS! AND SO DOES I!” I never understood exactly what that message was trying to convey, but it was pretty strange/hilarious though…

Been saying this. And if i've got to put my tinfoil hat on for a sec, havent all parties involved in relocating the bench so far been connected with Vans in some way? This could very well be the biggest setup in skate history happening right before our eyes. I'm going to the glory challenge, I really hope this is the case.

Would be pretty wack if that got stolen. The Exploratorium made it intentionally skateable to help skating be more socially accepted and as a sort of a statement against skate stopping. If we ruined that it would make us look pretty bad, I would personally prefer that society be moving towards letting us skate street spots without issue.

From Upstate NY and been living in the city for years now. Can say Im over the culture. NY think its different than LA, but there’s really nothing different about it.

I prefer to skate spots alone or with a close friend because usually blue park is a fucking pissing vibe out contest / content farm for out of towners. Whatever man, I get you want your little clip, but if im doing simple ass tricks enjoying my time off and you come up behind me 30 mph tryingn the same trick I was, youre a fucking transplant kook.

Still, NY is overrun with models , influencers and fucking posers of the likes. Its expensive, its nowhere near core at this point, and its blown the fuck out. Know that you will pay up the ass in rent to enjoy a nice vibe out by some kid that just mvoed here like you, gets his rent paid by daddy and think he runs shit.

The real NYers you meet know it too. Philly is a different world. Recommend that. NY is blown.

Wanted to follow up by saying, It might be cool to the dude that wants to switch it up and I dont think its bad to wanna come here, but the influencer fest/ try hard jock shit is destructive to the community. You’re a guest, act accordingly. Tired of the hostile skate session every time.

I love NY and my city but it is truly blown tf out sometimes. That being said, I’m relocating anywhere but here when this lease is up cuz my rent went up 500 and my family got priced out of upstate as of this year (cuz of remote work) lol. The trend seems to be that NY will become just like the Bay area.

You should look into local rent laws. You can't just raise the rent 500 in a lot of places. Figure out what tenant rights you have before uprooting your whole family on short notice.

Fuck landlords by the way. Not a job. Capitalism is so backwards.

Happens all the time and is a huge contributing factor to gentrification. Cities are making or breaking people, they either become part of the ultra wealthy class, or they are priced out of success and into poverty. The social structures in these places are slowly starting to resemble those in china, pretty sad.

Isn’t the whole draw of NYC based around the feasibility of being able to skate from point a to b, and all the random shit you can encounter along the way? So isn’t comparing spots to Philadelphia kinda pointless unless you are filming a project?

i always had that impression as well. i liekd the idea of going to philly to go to love park in the late 90s though because you could have the chance to meet other skaters who could maybe take you to more spots etc. (or take your money  ;D)  NYC never has had a spot as iconic and central as Love Park. its just way too big and spread out. Flushing Meadows is pretty close but i think you can only skate there certain times of the year maybe? Union Square seems pretty main, but as a spot it does not seem like its that good actaully lol. have to be really insane / creative to get a clip there.

its not even a good skate spot either though
love is actaully a good spot, like J Kwon
i understand the difference though. the spot doesnt need to be amazing, i guess i am just saying it sees a lot more video parts at love park because the spot is also really really good. the island in san francisco hardly sees any footage either but it is a pretty iconic and main place to meet up with peeps.

i dont understand what's going on here, are we just listing spots now? are we comparing like one vs the other? if you want to look at sheer numbers nyc is gonna win because its like 5x the size but i dont think it matters, they're different cities with different spots and theyre two hours apart. go skate both.

there's plenty to have rivalries about but spots ain't it

Brooklyn Banks is easily as iconic as Love but not as central to other skate spots as Love (because Philly is tiny compared to NYC but but still plenty of spots within pushing distance from Brooklyn Banks).  Regarding my own personal preferences I liked skating the small Brooklyn Banks (the ones at the top) more than I liked skating Love (although I had a solid ledge game for a long time ledge skating has never been my favorite).  In terms of plazas I will say that Love is arguably the best plaza ever in terms of variety and second in smoothness (Pulaski is #1 in smoothness).
