Civilist skate shop in Berlin just had a collaboration with Lacoste as well, don’t know the specifics but wouldn’t be a stretch to think they’ve gained a new creative director or similar and they are trying to reach a new audience.
The whole collegiate preppy/ j.crew thing is big again so it makes sense to have a bit of brand awareness.

I loved Lacoste back in the 80s and 90s.
Thrasher is too good for it though. Thrasher should be doing x Fred Perry imo. Perhaps Ben Sherman.
We need to take that shit back again. Y'all know why.
Then we could get a team together and I will be tm.
You know that would be glorious for whoever gets on.
I'd be the best TM in history because I truly give a shit about the skaters. Even if I didn't like someone in the van I'd make it work and make sure they was safe and paid.
Fred Perry team.
Ben K is on. There's no way that could happen and he's not on. His Skinheadism is kinda watered down but a box of Fred's in every colour way but Black and Gold and a few trips to Bobby's of Boston for some vintage red line Levi and Boom!!!
Skinhead is back in fashion.
I honestly believe we can fix Skinheadism using skating and the right team.
Skinheadism It's like 60/40 rn today thanks to 80s talk shows and right winged tiki fools.
I guess I gotta incl.ude 1%ers. I fucking hate those guys. Lots of them think they skinhead but you and I know they are not.
They are in the bonehead section along side Nazi jail kooks.
What we can do is cast spells of infinite infertility on all the black and gold shirts and have a 60% off sale and finish this war.
Skinheads ride skateboards in 2023 and are not associated with these above mentioned bonehead Clica.
I forgot to mention that I'm claiming dibs on TJ Rogers. I got a special box of collared ghetto gowns for the only guy in skating who currently can hold a candle to Lou.
TJ's recent parts make all the hairs on my body stand up like his name is PJ Ladd 2022
Also Tyson and Evan are on.
Henry frickin Sanchez is on anything If I ever do become a Brand Manager.
It's hurts me to hear that Stevie is the only other dude who knows that that our Rodney frickin Mullen.

They should have discreetly mailed Bobby DK a box like 10 years ago, or to Mosaic-era Stefan like 20 years ago. Definitely never should have arranged a photo shoot with T-Puds. Lacoste is/was a dope brand, with a lot of history and if you've ever walked into a Lacoste store it's pretty clear they sell quality goods that they design and manufacture themselves, unlike walking into a Zumiez, Vans or PacSun where it's all the same cheap polyester shit from china with different logos printed on as an after thought. I have a few 'Made in France' shirts and sweaters from Lacoste and the quality is unparalleled. Probably going to be a hot take here but I think the downfall of Lacoste started when they started shifting towards a more... 'Unisex' vision for the company. If you've checked their website in the past 3-4 years you might assume they are preparing for some dystopian future Europe where testosterone and estrogen production has been outlawed. Great if that's the look you're going for. Not an image I'm going to spend money to 'project'. All that being said this colab looks like shit, with neither brand actually producing any of the product, and the logos look like they were produced in 90 seconds on an iPhone.

Brand executives are complete morons without any direction, personally I expect the brand to suffer the fate of GAP.

The unisex look is mostly a french thing, Jacquemus and other brands with unisex looks are big here rn so they’re copying the trendy thing just like they tried to ride the skate fashion bullshit in 2018 (remember how fucking awful that was?). And since lacoste isn’t really an international brand (because they suck at actual business) well they’re often out of touch with the rest of the world, much like every western brand/person.

Someone I know worked there for years and got out shortly after the whole supreme collaboration went down, from what they told me the brand has been rudderless for some time, zero creative direction, shitty ideas from shareholders getting priority over actual creatives… More globally the brand executives fucked up the brand image when they tried going streetwear and alienated their traditional customer base, but they also drove away streetwear people who disliked their new collabs and pieces. So now they’re in this awkward position and the suits are trying to milk the last dollars out before the brand dies.
Which company are you talking about?

Someone who skates quite possibly became a brand manager.
Also, $198 at good quality is still wayy more than a Palace or Supreme hoodie. Even an Aime Leon Dore hoodie.
This collab is clearly not for any of us.

I back Fred Perry that would be rad.
Shame the only collab was done with Thames.
I still bought those garms in like ‘15 or something haha. Before Blodney left Palace etc.
Probably got stolen by some ex.
It would fly on Vinted.
Please FP manager turn down Blokes collab if that ever happens.

I'm honestly expecting drug dealers in Marseille to be rocking these 150 euros sweatpants next summer. With Versace sunglasses or some shit like that to complete the outfit.
I'll laugh so hard.

as I was typing this I noticed the Element x Barley ad on Slap and clicked on it....it looks a 1000 times better and costs half of the Thrasher x Lacoste thing.....

There really is just no tastefull way to spin this colab. What's the point of colaborating if it just makes both companies look stupid?

I'm definitely saying Lacoste is paying Thrasher.
That would be an Uber Bad Maneuver if it was the opposite. Skating has helped Lacoste in the past for sure.
I had the shoes once. They skate ok.
Honestly this should have happened around the time Paco came out. I was rocking mad Lacoste around that time.
It was kinda punk. Was like saying I can't afford Fred's or Ben's and I'm not rocking like Hilfiger or whatever.
I had the best Lacoste shit one could find at Marshalls too.
I'm getting out my collared shirt today. It's my homie's brand. I'll post one second.

We're assuming Lacoste paid Thrasher for this collabo, yes?
Yeah, that’s how it works. Lacoste pays royalties to Thrasher.
I’m honestly surprised a collab like this didn’t happen sooner.
I'm definitely saying Lacoste is paying Thrasher.
That would be an Uber Bad Maneuver if it was the opposite. Skating has helped Lacoste in the past for sure.
I had the shoes once. They skate ok.
Honestly this should have happened around the time Paco came out. I was rocking mad Lacoste around that time.

this is pretty funny from a French point of view man! out here Lacoste is the most unpunk thing you can imagine.... ;D
Goes to show context is everything I guess.
PS:
you just reminded me the framed and signed cover (Reategui) over my desk is a Poweredge issue! It's been there so long, totally forgot....

Yeah I can see that. It's definitely about price. All ponks and skins had Marshalls Lacoste around here.
We then would walk over to TJ Max and get $25 docs too.
This is the era of the $20 airwalk at Marshalls

So for the Casual/ultra style: didn't palace did a Collab with Umbro or lotto? Definitely wit polo, their ad for it was awesome

I wanted it but $200 for a sweater ? Nah . Last Lacoste pullover I bought I chased through 3 different states outlets to get for $38 instead of the original $130 . I back it though Lacoste always been cool and pretty quality. That’s probably the best made thrasher apparel you could ever buy. That said I’ll be stalking the outlets come January for the hoodie.

That jersey has been on my grail hunting list for years now, and I literally just got it given to me for free 2 days ago by a friend (it's a long story...).

I knew they go for crazy prices as it's pretty rare but then I went on eBay and saw it being sold for 1800$. :o https://www.ebay.com/itm/114255345786?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0oqndLMoTYW&sssrc=2047675&ssuid=aC70q_KZT2S&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

wow that is an insane come up, that jersey has been one of my grails since it came out
-
I also heard some rumours from friends mentioning that Lacoste been approaching some skaters to start a skate team... (I heard Thaynan and Victor Campillo names being mentioned)
And yeah this Thrasher collab looks really fucking bad, like super tasteless which is a shame, but they also recently dropped a Civilist collab, so it looks like they really are dipping their toes in the skate territory.
it's not as offensive, some pieces look pretty clean actually:

I honestly really like Lacoste as brand as I dig the "French Chavy" look, ( I guess it reminds me of early days of Lucas Puig and him wearing the "girolle"), but I fear this might end up looking like a shit show if they dont get the right people to run it.

Long story short, a dude that we are friends in common was moving away and left behind a few boxes with my mates of stuff he didn't wanted. The plan was to share between our friends group, so when my mate was posting what they got in my friends group chat and I saw this Jersey being pulled from the box I almost fainted ahah.
I only took that, pretty sure they dont even know it was a valuable piece lol ;D

All of this. The white version of that shirt is my personal grail.. but I gave up on it like 8 years ago when it was in the 400£ so yeah the figures you’re looking at now don’t surprise me haha.
All about that was so rad. The Joy Orbison tune, the pub, the original PWBC crew, it was genuine. It was probably among the first and last collab Palace did before it getting out of hand in all sorts of ways. Later V-Nice / Palasonic were the last things that made me love Palace.
Now Yardsale is the new early Palace. I dunno the Sergio Tacchini collab was badass. Hope they don’t sell out as well.

Am I the only one who likes it? I don't really know or care enough about fashion brands to have an opinion, but if I found those Thrasher/Lacoste sweatpants and hoodie at Nordstrom Rack for ~$40, I'd buy them in a heartbeat and wear them without a hint of irony.

You've got a modicum of free will, you can wear whatever you want.
The discussion here is basically about how a magazine that is considered a bastion of "core" skateboarding values collaborated with a Preppie clothing brand that has nothing to do with skateboarding...yet.
It's not about the item, it's about the principle.
Skateboarding is a weird thing. We built our own foundation, because the push and pull of mainstream acceptance has come and gone several times. We're entered a really, really new phase where skateboarding is now going to be seen as a "true sport."
There is always groups of outsiders wanting to ride the wave. This is an instance where Thrasher took the check, and it's having a real backlash.
But wear whatever you want. Wear a pasta strainer on your head and rainbow sandals while you skate, who cares.
There will always be gatekeeping, because there are people who truly love skateboarding as a culture and as a creative expression. It's personal to them when sharks come around looking for some cool points.
I skate alone now, because no one can gatekeep my love of skateboarding if no one is around.
-

Did not read the full thread about this disaster of a collab but a few people mentionned that maybe it was due to the arrival of skate-related people in Lacoste, as brand manager for example.
From what I know this is totally plausible, for exemple their current global head of strategic planning used to be the marketing coordinator for the french market at Vans.
Sad to see

I guess I was having a hard time seeing what aspect was intended to be constructive criticism.

Like it was shitting on the clothing genre that skateboard gear falls under.
And talking down about 13 yrs old while on a message board titled Useless Wooden Toy [Banter].
Are you more mad at kids, or more mad at the price point, or dislike the type in of clothing in general?
I can understand the style of being distasteful to you Obviously not everyone that skates is rocking skate clothes (e.g. Nyjah).

I bought a print issue of Thrasher this week for the first time in years....and seeing all the familiar features like Photograffiti, Something else etc, all that tradition, I thought of this collab again and it really left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

Not talking down on 13 year olds. I guess I have to say “not all 13 year olds”. But some are assholes. And trying to dress like thirteen year old rich bullies when you’re Cab or whoever is silly. Didn’t know this was controversial or a reflection of ALL skate wear.

My Mom tried to force me to wear lacoste and other preppie bullshit as a youth which I totally hated not to mention it was the uniform of the enemy as a young skater/punk rocker so obviously I think this collaboration sucks shit. I'm sure others have expressed this sentiment already (didn't read the whole thread) but I've been scarred by lacoste so had to get it of my chest(cheaper than therapy), thanks for indulging me.

you made me think of actually subscribing again....but it's just way too expensive overseas (80 $ vs 20 or so in the US I think).

oh my god shut the fuck up. bitching about shit you can’t control. lacoste wanted to collab with someone 5 years past their pinnacle and thrasher gets a bag to continue being the best print mag out. if they close their doors don’t come here complaining “oh no they continue afford to keep making mags because they were ‘too core’”

Thrasher has scrubbed all evidence of the Lacoste colab from their site... product, photos clips... all of it.
Nice try, but you can't un-jump the shark.
