Title: Most hilarious career ender
Post by: Shtonk on March 01, 2024, 12:22:58 PM
In the Ryan Reyes thread somebody wrote Adam Alfaro focused his career by stealing an iPod at a Zumiez demo. I thought it was drugs did him in but if its the petty theft that's pretty funny. That kid throwing away his third place price at Tampa Am was pretty good too. Never heard from again. There must be some juicy stuff out there, like hooking up with the wrong woman or making the wrong joke.

Corey Duffels Big Brother interview didn't end but surely impacted his career.

Billy Pepper punching Phelps and getting banned from Thrasher

That one gay skater who was brave enough to come out in the 90s (forgot his name, sorry) and lost his sponsors.

Earl Parkers, (the "master journalist") rise and fall within a year or so

Edit: missed the "hilarious" in the title of  the post but I will keep it up anyway. None of these are hilarious.

I get this story confused with Andrew Langi stealing Nick Merlino’s MacBook. It seemed like Langi had a promising career with pretty good sponsors for the time. He fell off quick after this.

I'm sure someone has it on hand...Nick Trapasso's Thrasher interview from last year had some mildly entertaining stories about some of his antcis that contributed to his career decline.

"KILL YO' SELF! HO-TEL!"

I can see why Mike Sinclair got sick of his shit.

Yeah, but that’s the less hilarious part. Like Brandon Bubble going full jock influencer and expecting to keep his sponsors is hilarious, but him laughing historically while his buddy kills a homeless guy is not so hilarious.

Weck didn’t kill his “career” he just said the obvious quiet part aloud. It was evident he wasn’t exactly not a racist prick. This dude was posting himself beating up bums wya before that he just didn’t have biebel level sponsors to be kicked of of.  But he had already fallen off by covid so it doesn’t really matter . Anyone see his attempt at comeback a few weeks ago after baker has a deathwish 2? Laughable

I am not trying to gate keep information. Here is a thread that will explain how to embed YouTube links so that the video may be played rather than be a clickable URL. I hope this information helps.

I saw Neen at a fish market in Echo Park yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen fresh salmon in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir you need to pay for those fish first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the fish and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each fish and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

There was a meme page called “foodskaters” that would make photoshops like Clyde pringleton and Dill pickle and roast peoples bad cooking or give props on decent plates of food skaters would post. Neen was cooking salmon skin side up in a pan and food skaters made a harmless jab at his method and neen responded hostile and told him to kill himself and the dm got spread all over. Weck got in on it and a lot of people were roasting neen.  Sometime down the line neen made a redemption video of him cooking salmon skin side down

I actually cooked salmon recently and did skin up for the first minute or 2 and then flipped it to skin down for the rest of the time. It came out great. Not defending Neen though. Don’t care for him much. Plus to me Lindsey Robertson has the best heelflips ever but people always say Neen and it bugs me. They’re too over exaggerated and he puts extra “Steez” on them. No thanks.

You can find all of those answers on Slap posts. I think the Furbzcielago, LLC/baby momma/girlfriend/landlord fiasco is more tragic than anything. It's the American experience in a nutshell. For better or worse, kids these days know that the American dream was a fleeting fantasy of the bourgeoisie.

Jesus. Well, another source of recent controversy has been Tim Von Werne’s dismissal from Birdhouse, possibly because of his sexuality? Care to comment?

Let me try to explain this.

This is back when I was doing guest editor issues of Skateboarder Magazine. I knew that Tim was gay and figured that it could be an amazing article to have him come out to the industry in the magazine. This is right around when we were gearing up to start doing The End.

We’d talked to Tim about doing the piece and while he was a little hesitant, he was down. So we do the article where he essentially comes out and we’re in the process of putting it in a future issue of the magazine… I just don’t think I realized the gravity of the article in terms of someone’s life experience and being gay.

I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus here but our team manager at the time, you might be able to figure out who that was, found out about the article and freaked out. He calls me up and says, “What the fuck are you doing!?!”

“I’m doing an interesting article about a skater who happens to be gay.”

“If you do that, I’m going to quit and take the whole team with me.”

Basically, he began threatening to steal my team because of this article. In hindsight, I don’t think that it would’ve actually happened, but at the time, it was a pretty heavy threat for me as a company owner. I had put so much of my resources into the team and we had all these plans around this big video we were about to start working on… I had to make the executive decision to kill the article.

You can call that selfish if you want but it felt like a very real threat to me at the time. And while it was an interesting article, I didn’t realize the weight of the situation. While I obviously support the cause, I wasn’t sure if I was the right person to be championing gay rights in skating… if that makes sense. I underestimated how it would resonate within the industry or how it would affect Tim. He’s the one who I really feel the worst for in all of this.

But I did call Tim and tell him straight-up what was happening. He wasn’t surprised by any of it.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought was going to happen. I was trying to warn you about all of this when the article was first brought up.”

He was super cool about it. I guess I just didn’t listen in the beginning. But after all that, he obviously didn’t want to be on the same team with someone who possibly felt so homophobic about the whole thing… which is another bummer, because I feel like other riders get some of the blame in this when it really was the actions of this one person.

I'm also a little bummed no one cared to mention this in that thread... should be the first thing to come up when somebody inquires about Strickland

Can somebody please elaborate on:

- a certain OG from Seattle who smacked Nick Trapassos drunk head into a pole?

- J Strickland getting Tim von Werner kicked off Birdhouse because he came out as gay

- what Peter Hewitt did to get kicked off Nike?

- furby yezzur + baby mama drama??

- Justin Roy cucking Markovich

You can find all of those answers on Slap posts. I think the Furbzcielago, LLC/baby momma/girlfriend/landlord fiasco is more tragic than anything. It's the American experience in a nutshell. For better or worse, kids these days know that the American dream was a fleeting fantasy of the bourgeoisie.

Sorry I'm on father duty and not really able to search and read through old threads but if you pointed me in the right direction I'd be very grateful and would buy you a beer if you ever came to Berlin

That kid throwing away his third place price at Tampa Am was pretty good too. Never heard from again. More of a hilarious Karma payback but piecing together from various threads on here it seems like J Strickland killed Tim von Werne's career because he was gay only to be robbed of his entire intellectual property a couple years later when Andrew Reynolds dumped him out of Baker after having built the brand's identity on Strickland's aesthetic. Weeelll he made the first two videos as well that established many of the classic tropes and they're using the style he created with the font and colours to this day. Buy yeah he doesn't own a single share of that company which in his case is what makes it so satisfying

Let’s not get it twisted who would have joined his exodus from Birdhouse.   Not sure if he was speaking for himself or the part of the team that would have left with him

Considering that was the mid-late 90’s and while we can’t assume everyone would be as accepting as they would be in 2024, the threat was that the TM would leave and take the team with him (allegedly). From what I understand nobody on the team was ever named so we can’t jump to conclusions.

It was Darren Harper.
Spencer stepped in to back Stevie with a board to Darren's dome.

Apparently Darren uses rage as fuel to get him 4 hours upstate to try and fight people.

something about Stevie not wanting Darren to ride for a certain shoe brand.  Darren felt he couldn't eat. Now he gets to be "skate coach dad" with his kids at Pulaski.  Stevie still doing victory laps at JKwon

Langi worked at my local shop for a bit after this all went down and he was always really chill and cool to me and my friends. From what I understand, it wasn't solely the laptop situation that ended his career, but also partying and whatnot. He's working at an airport now and seems to be enjoying life.

My ex skated back in the day there were very few women. He was among the few scumbags who knew she was taken by me, another skater, and was trying to sleaze his way into her pants, verified through texts. So ya, no surprise he got booted from the industry for stealing another skater's laptop and forgoing skating to do coke in the LA nightlife.

Great skateboarding though

The order of the list made me scratch my head. Then, I remembered the 2000s when some kid threw a fit for getting second place at Tampa Am and the death of Shane Cross.

It’s kind of true because Ali Boulala still had his name on stuff a couple years after that. I remember some ugly Etnies with cheetah print and a signature pair of Flip pants, unless that was just old gear that couldn’t move because of what he did. The fit at Tampa ended that dude’s career immediately.

Love to know where he is now. I get it that he was a “sore loser, poor sport” etc aside from this but it’s pretty funny in hindsight. Like I love contests actually but trying to one up someone else and score better is some sport jock type shit. At least he had a smile on his face while doing it, I think it’s funny that everyone took it so serious and that he was black balled for it. With all the shit that’s gone on and people kept their relevance, all it took was that? I have heard he’s cried at his placings before and I’m not trying to fend for him cause I don’t really care. Also what’s up with dude in the back grabbing that kid?

He had a ton of talent and a look that people gravitated to, so he was going to be fine no matter what.

I think the interview did cause him to lose Emerica as a sponsor and potentially miss out on riding for Baker. So if anything, the interview made him miss out on having a successful pro shoe and maybe the credibility of being a Baker guy. 88 Footwear wasn't exactly flying off of shelves.

But it's apparently too much to ask of our scene to make pro skaters accountable for homophobia, even when it amounts to hate crimes and murder...

Have there been any/many queer skaters on Baker? Only one that comes to mind is Elissa.

I'm 99% positive that Elissa is not gay, and 99% positive that Greco could be gay.

Cool joke but Elissa's partner has forever been Rachel Garcia, who's driving the car and points a snapshot at the lens in her Baker part.

Ryan Fabry will always be the patron saint of career enders.

Seaholm trophy chuck is pretty funny and at least no one was cucked or killed (aside from his career).

I met this really hot rollerblader girl named Coco at the indoor Vans park in Orange maybe like 8 or 9 years ago? I got her instagram at that time, and kept up with what she was doing via the gram. I guess she was like one of the top female rollerbladers in the world, she did have a real cool style I have to admit.

Anyways, it was maybe a few months later she started dating Austin Seaholm. They were what appeared to be a power couple for a quick minute, or maybe a few years, but ended up having a pretty bad breakup. I'm pretty sure she started posting about how he gave her genital herpes, and was abusive to her, just all around "bad-guy" vibes. It's been so long now I don't recall exact details, but remember just a bunch of STD awareness and acceptance posts from her after their breakup. I enjoyed watching Austin Seaholm at the Dew Tours and shit doing his twirly blord slides, but post-Coco I haven't liked the guy.

Not really. He was ultimately kicked off after TNT filed a libel lawsuit for instagram and slap posts. More ironic than hilarious.

Uhhh what? Pretty common knowledge he got the boot from DLX because he got caught stealing product when they employed him, years before instagram existed

Yeah that was the case, I believe Julien confirmed it himself. I bought a pin and a set of wheels from him at Potrero when I was a teenager, I didn't know at the time it was stolen. I wish I still knew where that pin was. Also, I'm pretty sure Instagram existed at the time, it was certainly in its infancy though.

1. lame hypermasculinity present in not only skating but society at large at the time. I'll never hate on someone crying, let it all out player
2. with the way he was heading Gator would've kooked himself out of the industry eventually regardless
3. too bad Christian got tied up with drugs, imagine where he'd be if that never happened
4. lol
5. wonder who this one is. would still be one hell of a mistake all these years later
6. wasn't this a sketch in a Girl video with Lance Mountain? idk what this is all about, Lance is still the shit, also even if it was real who cares what hobbies people have outside of skating, we literally play with, bitch and moan about, and practically dedicate our lives to this useless wooden toy, why should we judge someone for being into pogo sticks or kendamas or even fucking rollerblades
7. lol Bill Weiss has his own company, doesn't sound like any harm was really done
8. James Kelch wasn't the only EMB loc to be smoking crack, he was just the most publicized... cough cough Mike Carroll cough cough
9. ouch
10. Unfortunately this one is alive and well throughout the skate industry in 2024 with no plans of slowing down

I think 5 is a hypothetical, but 9 is not. Technically, these both apply to the same person, although whatever fight may have gone down was probably one sided.

Number 6 is likely a reference to Andy Mac who was at one point was pushing turbo powered "extreme" pogo-sticks to the X-Games youth crowd.

They talk about it in Andy's Epicly Later'd. For a while, Andy was still riding for Anti-Hero, but they would take his pro board away because he would get caught stealing from the DLXSF warehouse when he worked there. I think eventually, they just fully let him go after he couldn't stop.

I think 5 is lame but reasonable especially when you're young..... most beefs that end up in sketchy fights/sleeping with buddies wife are pretty foul and inexcusable....

However in unknown circumstances 9 could be excused had he not known,  Sheffy should've looked at his wife because it takes two to tango.....

You know that and the 25 years of interviews and videos in which pros talk about how people were weird to her on tour cause she’s a woman and the team would just laugh at the socially awkward skaters trying to hit on a gay woman .

Not a career ender by any means, but Muska definitely got kicked off of Toy Machine for some drunk shenanigans.

At the "Welcome to Hell" premiere he got too drunk on Goldschlager and called Templeton essentially a bitch because the video wasn't going to premiere due to some technical issues. I still think this is one of the funniest reasons to ever get kicked off of a brand.

Again, not even remotely a career ender because Muska went on to actually become the Muska with the creation of Shorty's...and in time we get the Chadilliac.

There's been so many stories of this night from different perspectives that it is difficult to know exactly what went down and why. The general overview I've gathered is this:

As the filming deadline loomed for Welcome To Hell, it became apparent that either Jamie or Muska was going to get last part, based on their respective footage. This created some tension between the two, especially because Jamie is also the de facto filmer, editor, and team manager for Toy. Muska breaks his ankle trying to tailslide the Cardiel hubba, which allows Jamie to pull ahead & get more clips to justify giving him last part. You could speculate that the frustration of being injured, the tension of the last months of filming, losing last part to the guy who had the hands on the reins the whole time anyways and who was probably going to give himself the last part even if Chad didn't get hurt, was building inside The Muska. Then it's premiere night, the final mastering of the premiere copy gets delayed/lost and there is no video to show. People are confused/frustrated/angry, including an intoxicated Muska, who goes off on Ed and Ed kicks him off that night/next day. My assumption is that he was partly frustrated at Ed for being such a passive team owner and letting JT run everything, which made Chad feel like he was being held back/overshadowed.

This is from 15+ years of hearing many different versions of the story, and I probably missed some details or misinterpreted some of it. Lmk if you think I missed anything.

Nah that wasn't the reason, Chad was actually injured and had already accepted the fact that Jamie was going to get curtains in "Welcome to Hell."

He talks about it specifically at (13:20) in his Epicly Later'd.
