With this week?s earlier announcement of a Bones Brigade documentary film in the works, it has come to our attention that Mike Vallely has returned to his roots and the Powell Peralta camp full-time. Where does this heartfelt reconnection leave his involvement with his recently launched By The Sword Skateboards? We?re not exactly sure, but look for Mike?s continued contributions and endorsements with the Powell Peralta in the months to come?right back to where he started over 20 years ago. - from skate daily

I have mad respect for everything he has done for skateboarding but he is a jock now. We get it , Mike. Go where the money is. So much for your DIY company. Looks like Mike like that Corporate Sword.

12.03.10 //Goodbye to By The Sword
SWWWWOOOOOSSSSHHHH !! Thats the sound of a toilet flushing. Well after 6 months of working on "By the Sword" with Mike Vallely, it seems that it has come to an end. We recently recieved an email from Mikes partner with BTS telling us that he got an offer to go back to Powell Peralta and that he is taking it. We at Regulator never had a say in any of it. We just got an email and that was that. Of course we are bummed to not be working with Mike anymore but I think I am more bummed for the shops, distributors and skaters that got behind the message of BTS and supported it. In the end I am stoked for Mike. He is my friend and I only want what is best for my friends. In the meantime maybe Ill steal the "DIY Or Die" slogan?! I really liked that!
So there you go. If you still want to find some stupid skater owned bull shit, Regulatordist.com is still your place to go!

Mike V has been a pro for so long I'm sure he is sick of it and wants to try something new. Unfortunately it looks like hockey is not his next best talent hehe

Is their phone number really 1-800-GET-BENT? If so, that's awesome.

Has he done anything cool in the last 15 years?

Basically just past this era, early world mike vallely holds a dear place in my heart, so much so that I don't even consider him the same person.Early new deal mike is pretty awesome also.I did have a few black label boards and was stoked on his dedication to the type of skating he did, but somewhere over the years something went wrong and now I just don't care anymore.I can't blame him for going back to a steady paycheck.

Even in 1988 he was wearing his own t-shirt while doing a sweet no comply.
Somewhere along the way it become less about doing a no comply and mostly about wearing his own t-shirt.

That Demo from 88 with J Lee, Mike V, and Martinez is sick. J Lee and V where putting it down. I think to this day Mike V's Spead Freaks part is one of my favs.

Kristian, please start posting in here, already.
That press release was done really well, if not perfect.

From what I know there is still a team rule book. I think one of the rules is you can't wear re issued shirts in new ads. Im not sure how thats going to work now that they are powell peralta and its all re issued stuff.
-
I am still hoping he will call it a fucking day, I am so amazed that he has the balls to think his name will carry his own gay jock skate companies, and why companies will sign him (EVEN POWELL!) knowing his deck sales are crap. I think he does alot of "sword" swallowing to still have a job!

Its funny, because I very clearly remember him talking a TON of shit about Powell after he quit the first couple times. Whining about some shit about running through a graveyard as if it was some terrible injustice. I never saw the big deal in Powell asking him to do that, but the fact that he quit them and talked shit, then quit world and threatened rocco and talked shit, just made him seem unprofessional and like a meathead, and really stuck in terms of my impression of the guy.
Now him talking about them like he never had any issue with them whatsoever, and its been cool the whole time makes him look like a complete bitch.
DIY or DIE? You made your choice Mike. stick with something for once you pussy dilettante. Its not DIY, so I guess its time to...

Im sure that any person with any social skills and above average intelligence can realize the type of personality traits that Mike V carries are those of a lost, confused and insecure individual desperately trying to make his next choice based on what he deems acceptable at the time.
meanwhile, constantly questioning his true worth on a daily basis and diving further into insecurity.
also, remember when this asshole painted a confederate flag on his camaro? you're from jersey fool!

Yeah, Mike V. makes some odd choices. I remember reading that KOTR article he wrote when Element was one of the participants and on one page, he talked about how much fun he had just skating a pool with everybody and ignoring the trick book for a night and how that's what skateboarding is about, never lose sight of that, even when you're in a contest designed to be fun, and shit. Then the next page, he said something to the effect of "Well, we lost. I wish some people on the trip would have taken this as seriously as I did." I don't get it.

I think it's more of a case of a 40 year old pro skater with a wife, kids and mortgage but no skill or desire to work a normal job. Perhaps he's lost and confused, but his choices are probably based on keeping food on the table instead of some mental problem.
I've been around long enough to know that whenever someone tries to instill some lofty ideal or philosophy on an inanimate object (skateboards), it's just another marketing gimmick. I'm not saying that people shouldn't talk shit on him, but what career choices would you make if you were in his shoes?

How about keeping it fucking real?
Steve Olson hardly even skates and is endorsing products and getting paid enough to support himself and a family if he chose to. That's just one example off the top of my head.
You don't have to lecture these people about marketing tactics either, we all understand this fairly simple concept.

Ever heard or Duane Peters? One of the many reasons hes the fuckin greastest is because he keeps it real, sure he may not have certain insurances and goes through some hard economical times, but who the fuck dosnt?? he still has enough money to support himself and his kids.

"diy or die"
when mike v ended his business venture with the distributor, he had his "partner" send an email. Thats about as lame as you're girl dumping you on a text. But we all know DIY means "do it yourself" and when it come to quitting a business deal, mike v couldnt do it himself.

His board sales on Element were actually pretty good from what i heard, when he was first on he was just sorta the legends guy but he sold a ton of stuff so they put him on for real and then thats how he got his shoe deal. The guy has a pretty big following with old school skaters and everyone that watchs his show, i'm pretty sure its kids that got too old for Bam but regardless he does have a pretty big following.

I used to respect mike vallely a lot. I was a fan forever and over the years I've defended him on more then one occasion with every ounce of commitment, enthusiasm and passion. His part in public domain was a favorite. I remember doing everything i could to learn anything he did back then. I've watched his carreer for as long as I have been skating. The pride I felt as a fan has given way to shame and embarassment and ,while I admit, he played an enormous part in skateboarding, The problem is that Mike Vallely will never be as legendary to skateboarding as he is to himself in his own mind.
He has blown himself up to a point where his delusions of grandeur are nothing short of humiliating. Every word that comes out of his mouth is a ticking timebomb of hyprocrisy waiting to contradict itself. Theres a certain implied guarantee that anytime he says anything about anything or anyone that he's going to turn on it eventually and within minutes his saving grace will become an instant damnation.
He has turned his back on sponsors, gone against his word and sold out friends along the way.
It's the desperate attempt of a man holding on to something he lost years ago.
Face it Mike, Regardless of what you think about yourself.. take a little advice: You will never be close to the kind of legend Cab, Mountain, Natas or Gonz are.

Mike: "Stacy, I'm not running through a fucking graveyard again. You know that's not what I'm about."

It'll be like you're running through your past being pursued by skateboard industry demons and you don't know where to go. It's all very symbolic. But then you see a light in the sky. You turn towards the light and there's a skeleton hand reaching down to you. I think we can probably do this part in CGI, but I wanna have the Powell Ripper materialize in front of you. He'll be glowing in a white light. You guys hug and then..."

However, I'm pretty sure that Mike V would be down for anything CGI, cheesy and Hollywood-esque. Maybe he could fight some aliens with a hockey stick while riding a skateboard and wearing Axel Rose-style cornrows.

I can't wait for his Matador beef jerky or Ball Park hot dog endorsements.

He's like the Ted Nugent of skateboarding. I like a lot of the stuff he put out, but he says some wacky shit.

Ehhh... I say more of a Mel Gibson or Tom Cruise... He is really good and entertaining at what he does, but with age he just lost his marbles...

"I used to respect skateboarding a lot. I was a fan forever and over the years I've defended my favorite pro on more then one occasion with every ounce of commitment, enthusiasm and passion. His part in whatever was cool at the time was a favorite. I remember talking about doing everything i could to say I learned anything skateboard trick done back then. I've watched other people's skateboarding for as long as I have been skating. The pride I felt as a fan has given way to shame and embarassment and ,while I admit, I never played an enormous part in skateboarding, The problem is that I will never be as anything to skateboarding and that is why I am bitter and was never any good.
I had blown myself up to a point where my actual skateboarding delusions of grandeur are nothing short of humiliating. Every word that came out of my mouth is a ticking timebomb of hyprocrisy waiting to contradict myself. Theres a certain implied guarantee that anytime I post anything about anything or anyone that I'm going to turn on it eventually and within minutes his saving grace will become an instant damnation.
I have turned my back on brands, gone against my own word and sold out friends along the way.
It's the desperate attempt of a man holding on to something he lost years ago.
Face it Slap posters, Regardless of what you think about yourself.. take a little advice: You will never be close to being able to actually ride a skateboard."
I have taken the time to edit his post about Mike V, so it truly underlines 98% of the posters here on Slap and their delusional relationship as they age and realize they could never skateboard and were slaves to the things they bitched about day after day.

False. You don't have a clue what youre talking about.
I've put in 25 years. I've paid my dues in sweat, blood and physical abuse. And for a second i felt some lame need to defend myself against you're bullshit then realised it was entirely off topic.
The simple truth is I find it hard to look at someone with admiration anymore when I'm left looking at a man who flip flops around the industry proclaiming each new business venture as the best.. last.. and greatest only to see him do it all over again in a handful of months. I wonder about things when i look at a tour where he's doing demos but kids need VIP tickets that cost a fortune for a chance to meet him. I get that people change. I understand nothing stays the same. And im aware he has a family to take care of. Despite all of that i can't help but feel like MY mike vallely.. the one I defended well into my late 20's sold his soul.
I'd have a lot more respect for Mike Vallely.. Present day mike vallely if he just called down the middle. Its easier to respect
a dude who admits hes selling out to make a buck then it is to respect anyone who says they are "core" or "diy" just to
fit into whatever kind of pants the cool kids are wearing this year. Where the heck is a man supposed to go when he's burned every bridge going outta town.
I might be new posting around here but ive been lurking forever. Rather then contribute something constructive you sunk to typical message board flame tactics. Good on you. Edit that jackass.

"Wow. You were 100% correct.
I've put in 25 years with some false sense of reasoning that the number of years I have claimed something makes me worthwhile. I've paid my dues in sweat, blood and physical abuse just like anyone else that has skateboarded, but there is that validation issue I have showing it's ugly head again. What can I say, I was really into Black Label when Mike Vallely rode for them. I'm competed, cause I am a jock and need to feel like i beat people at something I "love". I've worked along side a handful of cities to get skateparks designed and built, I have to do something to feel like I am "part" of the scene. Everything I do is for show, I need people to see what I am doing and making an effort so I have self worth. I take shit from my gf every few weeks when i come home without my board cause i gave it to a kid who needed it cause my buddy runs a local shop and cuts me great deals. I tell the kid I gave the board the reason it looks brand new is cause I ride for the company and he should have it, cause I care about the scene, I know what it was like when I was kid riding shitty setups!!!! I make sure to tell everyone possible that I give local kids boards, it provides good cover for the fact that I don't actually skate anymore, but I sure do like to talk about it and provided feedback about how current pros, "just don't get it or compare to the pros of the time when I was growing up!!!!" I've worked as an instructor at a few parks in different municipalities doing camps with small children as most guys my age do so I can cling to the label skateboarder, I don't care, it is for the kids.... I did my time riding for shops or getting flow from distributors in my early to mid 20's until I decided I just wanted to get back to what I loved in the first place, come to think of it, I wasn't really on flow or the team, but I filmed the team, had a car and drove them around, and cleaned the shop for used shop decks. I really mean I sucked Riding my skateboard. The truth be told I have lived through Mike Vallely for most of my life. I looked up to the dude and i made a lot of decisions on who i wanted to be as a skateboarder as a result of things he did himself. Eventually though i started to notice how often he just went back on his word, I am a complete tool and realized I was stalking and cloning someone I didn't know personally. Now I am using this forum to lash out. Social Distortion forever."
There you go bud. :)

Ahahahaha. Vallely is a kook but so is anyone who 'feels' let down (this excludes the people who were actually let down, like Kristian).

Bones wheels are huge as are the bearings and the truck bushings, so I am sure it all adds up. Have not seen many people riding the powell blanks like I use to, but I know they made a lot of money off of those.
-
Powell makes very good products. The boards, wheels, bearings, etc. The boards are extremely consistent in shape and concave too, just like Dwindle does it.
-
I'm sure a lot of dudes who used to skate buy Powell boards for their kid's first deck.
Also, I have always liked Mike's skating. I believe that sometimes certain talented people wouldn't achieve the greatest works without being somewhat unstable crazy in other areas of their lives.

No, he would want to go with Nathan's HotDogs because he has found childhood memories of going to Coney Island. He would be proud to represent a seminal East Coast brand in his wiener eating endeavors.

Yep, he is really loyal like that.

On the San Antonio leg of the hobo tour some assholes I knew kept yelling for him to do a ho-ho (street plants were already dead) and he did it, I was little and was confused as to why he was so eager to please some dicks who were fucking with him. You may have a story about a great interaction with him but he's been an idiot for 21 years plus.

Oh yeah, duh. I had a couple of those Powell blanks in/around 95 i believe. They were surprisingly tough.

Oh and Mike Vallely and Stacey Peralta are both fucking tools.

Might as well rest the case, at this point.

hahaha. yr avatar totally sealed the deal. i just imagined Mike V punching the shit out of his keyboard out of frustration. lol

Someone should send Watson's post about Mike to him, not that I think it'd do much good, the guy is pathological. At least people like Sheckler and P-rod don't claim to be core as fuck or whatever nonsense mike V believes about himself this week or that. I think this guy is worse than J-Rog at this point, I mean, at least Jeremy's trainwreck is funny, this kook is just infuriating
