Just tried to watch the Kelly Hart recruitment video at the Berrics (first mistake), and I couldn't even make it all the way through. The 'production values' are so ridiculous and over the top. Every trick lands on beat with the music. The music slows down and we get some panning shot of his face or some thing. Then the music kicks back in again and we get more tricks edited to the beat. This is a trend that has been around for some time (I realize it isn't anything new), but it's feeling like the skating is taking a back seat to the 'incredible' editing, and I'm fucking over it. I also realize that not every skate video out there isn't trying to look like it was produced by the 'team' over at MTV, but when a skate video becomes un-watchable because it's trying too hard...just pitiful. I'd love to see tricks edited without a huge worry about every trick landing on the downbeat, or some syncopated version thereof.
I'm not against art. Love the old Foundation videos, for example. But this is too much. It's not interesting. Seems like some editers masturbatory fantasy...just reel building
I was wondering if anybody else has this same reaction to this style of video.
-
are you calling that style of editing "artsy"? if so i'd say that style is more commercial, or the opposite of "artsy" tendencies.
and yes its played out and completely boring.
-
I just think the editing, lighting and music is always geared towards such a young audience. I am a mature man and I wish the berrics would edit some skating to some Frederic Chopin, or perhaps Claude Debussey, with some shots of the skater enjoying a french roast and a glass of rosey Cabernet.

Yeah, you're right. Maybe artsy wasn't the right word...I guess I meant that it looks like the editor is trying to be all "artsy", in the end looking like a fresh art-school graduate.
-
I hate that style of editing too.
And I hate the way Fully Flared was edited, I like slo-mo in moderation but when half of the part is in slo-mo thats just silly.
I seriously think Fully Flared is the worst edited video of all time, they even blew it on the extras.
-
think its good when certain people do it. not everyone can pull it off.
-
I don't really see any difference between "Commercial" and "Artsy" when it comes to skateboard videos. It's ALL "commercial" - different videos are just going after different segments of the market.
You can stick slo-mo shots of migrating birds, or ramp every training facility trick to the downbeat of Lil Wayne's latest mixtape, in the end it's just dudes on boards doing tricks. My feeling is: as long as the skating is good, it's hard to fuck it up too bad.

Reading your response, I am able to recall cases where I've enjoyed this type of editing...still, I couldn't even make it through that recruit video on the berrics. It's like, every video part has to be so goddamned epic. What's wrong with showing us a bunch of great footage. Not every part, or video for that matter, has to change the world.
-
Radio/Television was rather artsy, but that made it fucking awesome. I love how every part had a "theme"
-
this thread is sucks
-
Yeah berrics shit is not artsy, I think what you're trying to say is that it is just over edited, which i can agree with maybe. I just think the songs suck for the most part.
-
this thread is sucks
yes, indeed

The song they used is terrible and its over edited to shit. Cant hate on anything Chase Gabor does with a vx though. Imagine if he didnt have to be Berras bitch and didn't edit all mall kid.
-
as long as the skating is good, it's hard to fuck it up too bad.
But it can be done. Flip Extremely Sorry.
this thread is sucks
Hahahaha I imagined some very foreign person saying that.

agree with whats been said. sloppier videos are more enjoyable cause the emphasis is on the skating. if you are going to overdo the editing, start taking tips from DNA dist videos. stuff like Fully Flared is kind of a joke to me. I dont get hyped to skate because Koston blew through a styrofoam wall or Cairo Foster fell into a hole in the ground. grab a camera, film your homies, and throw that ish together with music. also, enough with this hammers and bangers nonsense, let me see lines in skate videos!

I agree with OP.
1. Skateboarding is alot trendier than we want to admit, applying an artsy effect helps brand the content with an aesthetic the youth can digest.
2. It's a cheap way to turn 4 tricks into 4 minutes.
3.bad design. Most people making skate videos are have a pedestrian, uneducated, and inexperienced pallet.

That was awesome!
Talking about slow-mo, Bootleg3000 was like 50% slow-mo and I loved it. It also felt like the clips were just thrown together with audio. But it all just flew together. Fully flared - top notch production and it was like meh. I think I saw it only once. No doubt, skateboarding was great, but the music and editing just made it hard to watch.

i hated extremely sorry and mind field.
all the in-between shots of flashy colors, shitty grain textures and robots (?) made it pretty much impossible for me to remember anything from either one of them. Don't get me wrong, the tricks are sick and i like a lot of the skaters, but the videos just sucked ass.

in my opinion, mind field is one of the best new videos out there. and yeah, mtv editing gets boring, but so does anything else. there will always be a lot of people duplicating and mimicking what others do, unfortunately us skateboarders arent as creative as we would like to be. the all hammers no bullshit videos gets boring too.
parkfooty+bad song+horrible website+pre and post commercials+boring skater is usually a bad combo. change just one thing, and it might be worth watching!

so good. i love Art Bars
-
THIS is why i cant wait for the palace video, if youve seen any of their webstuff or promo you can guess their video will be filmed on a vx or older and edited in windows movie maker
-
just watch physics wheel co s dream reality- that s pretty much as artsy and at the same time as real as it gets.

I say who da fack cares. Skateboarding is skateboarding, people interpret it however they may, but if you ask me, its just as interesting to see how a video was edited as it is to see how buck and creative the skater can get.

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLjtC_kU0JY#)
The berrics is so artsy, bro.

i think if you think editing makes a video unwatchable, you're just not paying enough attention to the skating

dudes got a point, youre meant to be watching skating not the way its given to you.
when you buy a book do you stare at the cover for ages of do you read and digest the content of the book, which is the reason you bought it in the first place

2 guys with weed names arguing. nice.
the lifestyle shots are prettty dumb i dont care about seeing some guy's face close up all serious looking, for a longtime showing guys roll up to a handrail or gap all stressed was so big, or a guy banging his trucks off a rail as he walks up the stairs, etc.
i like on the thrasher video you see this hot girl walking into her apt and slash looks like he just threw his back out and then you see him up top boardsliding this ridiculous handrail where that girl just went into, that was well executed. also when greco pays slash the money that was good too, some people know how to do it right.

Minute long intros are annoying when you're watching at work with no audio. Especially if it's random chillin shots of the dude making goofy faces.

Or worse, random chillin shots of Goofy making dude faces. That's the worst!

quit your dayjob so you can still enjoy watching skateboarding

I rewatched Public Domain and holy shit some of the editing in that still drives me crazy. Another good example of bad editing completely ruining a video was Freedom that Zero Sophisto clothing vid. Fucking yuck.
