Skated the park for the 1st time today, 3 dudes rolled up, 2 set up new decks right away. Brand new and none could kickflip or ollie the 4 stair, one guy tried atleast 6 times kicking away each time. his buddy was claiming he would boardslide the rail "right now..." he then skated to the beginner side of the park and never touched the rail. I thought this was BMX type shit, buy a sick new bike and basically stand on it?
Poser used to be common wording in the 2000's, with everyone buying baggy skate clothes and new boards yet lacking tricks. This year seems to be the chinese new year of posers. Now that skateboarding is seen as cool, and "normal." It's neither, used to be the grittiest fools trying shit they might not land, kicking away was not an option, your friends would razz you to no end
A rollerblader showed up, waxed every rail in the park, and I left. See why I hate skateparks?

What a horrible world, imagine a guy with limited skills putting together a new board, what an asshole poser

skateboarding's become the sport that people are now dabbling in. We'll see some quality skaters here and there but for the most part these people will show up to the park on sunny days and try but almost never show up to the street spots.

Being a poseur is trending bigtime this spring. Check out Kanye getting his LARP pose on in Milan:

There's a difference between learning to skate and being a poser. Does that mean we were all posers the first year until we had been doing it long enough to claim legitamacy? Learning to skate means trying the basics, ollie, kickflip, 50-50, etc. while being a poser means showing up, acting like your hot shit and not being able to back it up like these guys below...

Ahhh use of the word poser, that takes me back to the 1999 transworld skate forums. Such a memorable time. Many topics asking burning questions such as "Am I a poser? I can't kickflip", "Is Tony Hawk a poser?" and many more discussing the deep philosophy of true poserdom.
What a bunch of wank.

i don't think the term applies to a guy trying to ollie a small set and his friend talking about boardsliding a rail but you're definitely a dumbass so i'm going to politely exit this thread

it was 17 (62) degrees and sunny in your (supposed) city today.

I remember back in high school there was this hype beast kid I was kinda friends with, one day he came to school with a brand new set up. Needless to say I was hyped, but then I was mega let down after when I asked him "lets go skate sometime" and he replied with "Oh man I don't really skate it's more of just an accessory". That's the absolute definition of a poser.
-
You ride rollerblades.

-
Transworlds letters sections in 97' were pretty similar to this threads topic.

That shit guys from sweeden and he was interviewed I guess afterward "you never quit, once you start quitting it gets easier to quit" was along the lines of the quote. He wasnt fukin phased by the shit incident - giving interviews with inspirational quotes in them. I saw a guy who was a total fuckng poser gets the job at the skate shop and THEN starts skating. Anyway a year later I saw him with nose mannies, it was rad!
-
Guys, give the kid a break. Boys will be boys. The proof is in the putting, and the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Get me?

Yea I certainly hope there isn't some inherent "poser period" in skateboarding like the "everyone's a kook when they start" mentality in surfing. Skateboarding is super judgmental as it is, with everyone sizing everyone up as some clown with a board until they see a proper trick get thrown down. Surfing has taken that shit to this ridiculous level where everyone hates everyone else with a surfboard, even if they're good, because they're not local or sponsored or some superficial bullshit.
I love surfing but skateboarding is way cooler when it comes to community (and a lot else, really).
