Moving to San Diego?
« on: January 28, 2019, 09:24:06 AM »
I am considering taking a job in San Diego. What is the skate scene like there? Is it a cool place to live? I will be moving from the midwest.

San Diego is rad. Great weather all the time and great food. Good parks. It’s super expensive. I have lived here on two separate occasions. Once before kids and once with kids. Great place to have kids also. The only downside is housing and the cost of living is so ridiculous. Depending on where you are coming from in the Midwest it may seem super crowded.

Thanks so much for the input. That's what I was hoping to hear.

i lived in julian for a while, outside of SD in the mountains but its a sweet drive and a cool place to check out if you wanna get your tourist on. check out the apple pie place there, so so good.

also around there is a crazy watering hole/waterfall called devils punchbowl. kinda a gnarly hike but it was awesome once we got there.

also used to go to this gay bar with co workers in sd called "the hole". im not gay but god damn they made the best margaritas and they always had good prices so it was worth having dudes hit on you.

If you skate parks, you're lucky cause every city of SD has one I believe. Majority of the schools have spots too

Do you know what area you'd be coming to? Regardless, you'll be doing a lot of driving to get from spot to spot. All county owned parks are free if you don't wanna deal with busts.
Before you say the music sucked, have you considered shutting the fuck up?

I'll be in the Linda Vista area. The park there looks sick from the pictures.

That park is nice and it has a bit of everything. Just know that place gets crowded as fuck. Linda Vista is somewhat centrally located so you're not to far from anything. 15 minutes from downtown which in turn is about another 15 minutes from the Mexican border. Things start to get spread out as you get into North and East county. For example, another great park is in Encinitas. To get there from Linda Vista wold take 45 minutes with absolutely no traffic. With moderate traffic, well over an hour. Rush hour, don't even try. I would recommend going there, though. It's a picturesque beach town and you can take a look at the Encinitas sign and bank that Bam tail dropped into, and shit your pants thinking about doing it.

At least half the people there moved from the midwest too, so you won't feel that out of place. That's where I moved to from the midwest before heading to NorCal. Lived around central SD for 9-sh years, and the only thing I really miss are my curb spots and Hoboken pizza.

In my opinion it’s one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. For skating and reasons otherwise. SD is really expensive. I grew up in New York so it wasn’t terribly jarring day to day but housing prices are insane. It’s remarkably nicer than LA county and still has fun school yards to skate.

I grew up skating the downtown area. Compared to L.A. and S.F., downtown seems too small and I can't imagine that some of the older spots are still skateable. That said, San Diego is the epicenter for vert skating and probably has more pools per square foot than any other city. I have only gone back to skate Washington Street.

Linda Vista was a bad neighborhood. I imagine it is different now. It definitely still has a heavy military presence. I initially lived in Navy housing, and even for me it's too much.

Shalom to all my slap pals,

I'm going to SD in a couple weeks with some friends, I booked a hotel close to the linda vista park. Anyway, last time I went we had a car, this time we might not. Are there any areas that are fairly dense with good spots to skate? What's the love park or jkwon of San Diego? What are some DIYs besides washington street and chicano park?

I honestly don't think there are any types of plazas similar to jkwon or love park. San Diego has its street spots, but they are mostly within school yards or in the vicinity of downtown. I'd also say maybe cruise Balboa Park, but I've had my fair share of friends get tickets for skateboarding there from cops. But SD has a plethora of great skate plazas/parks such as Linda Vista, City Heights, Memorial, or Poods up in Encinitas.

Linda Vista does get crowded, and I wasn't as into as I thought I'd be - I like the look of some of the other new ones the Mafia guys have been hitting up. I will say this, though - I always stay in Oside, and that's 10 - 15 minutes north of Encinitas, yet I made it to Linda Vista in about 40 minutes, door to door, mid weekday. You a slow driver, or maybe stuck with commuting during peak times? I go 9 over the limit, always.

Yeah, nothing like that in SD, sadly. Fuck, it's hard enough to find a proper ledge that isn't on a sidewalk next to a busy road. Metroplex is seeing a revival, but it's hit and miss, bust-wise, and littered with tiny rocks you can't see that constantly stop you. There's a Michael's around the Carlsbad/San Marcos border that has dope ledges out back, but it depends what security is working. Skatepark smooth ground.

Heading out to San Diego in mid april with a bunch of friends to hit some spots for a few days.
Info on any flatbars, ledges, gaps/stairs/handrails is much appreciated. Staying in the Mission Beach area I believe.

I lived in Oceanside for 5 years and it was the best place I’ve ever lived.  San Diego has skaters everywhere and the majority of them are cool as fuck and friendly.

Prince Park is so goddamn fun and there are curb spots EVERYWHERE.

The Mexican food is ridiculous everywhere.

If you’re ever in Oceanside please eat at Teri Cafe for amazing and cheap Japanese food.

North County SD has the best parks in the world as far as I'm concerned. Like 8 great parks just off the top of my head.

This is probably true, I just know of a couple one's shit and one's epic but I only worked in North County seasonally so I don't know the real scoop. I will say though, North County (Cardiff/Encinitas/Leucadia) is pretty dope if you can get past the upper crust wackness. My homie lives out in Vista and commutes to North County, actually not a bad set up and you can save some money doing that. 2¢
