Short tail people
« on: November 29, 2021, 06:17:28 AM »
I have come to the conclusion that a short tail is the most important part of my setup. I would never of thought it would be as important as the other specs. Are there any other short tail homies out there?

Ok

Well I might be…
Tell me more. How short is short? How’s it relate to wheel size? I very much skate better switch, using the nose as the tail. If I try and skate switch, using the regular tail, I get rocket foot flapping ollies. Gross.

6 1/4 (ish) is what I had in mind. That's typical for my sub 8 setups so I never gave it much thought. It was when I skated my quasi 8.1 that also has a tail that size that I noticed.

Quasi do have the short tail, in my experience.
I like Craig shapes. Carl Aikens skates one that has a really short tail. With the ventures. Trips me out watching it. I wonder what the effect of wheel size is on nose and tail

Big wheels give a stiffer pop in my experience. Higher off the ground = More distance till the tail hits. So a very short tail + big wheels would probably be intense for some people but it's all preference.

Idk

Currently skating a shop deck with a steep 6.25" tail and a 14.25 wheelbase. It feels horribly cramped coming from years of skating generator's standard 8.38 shape. Like my front foot is just behind the bolts when setting up to pop. I've been wondering if my body will naturally compensate over time.

I'm quite tall and have long legs in proportion to my torso. So perhaps it'll never feel comfy?
I am almost 5'11 and never feel cramped on these type of setups. That is uncommon for my height from what I read on here. So if you don't get used to it, you are normal (I think) :)

I tried my friends birdhouse with a 6.3 tail and was surprised how much i liked how my flip tricks felt. I usually ride a 6.75 tail on the Polar 8.5

they’re pretty nice until your board razor tails like 1-2 weeks earlier than a normal length tailed board. short but very sweet life span… atleast for me

Weird coincidence I just came to the same conclusion yesterday. I tried several boards yesterday; FA, new BBS quasi, an old krooked and my timing seemed so off on all of them. Switched back to the short tailed ps quasi and it feels perfect. It seemed like with the longer tails I need to pop off the tip to get the timing on kickflips right but on the short tail I can keep it more in the pocket which feels more natural. I could probably adapt but so far things just feel better on the short tail.

I typically skate Aces and Indys and prefer a longer tail. However, I'm currently giving Ventures another try on a board with a long tail and short nose.

Everything about it feels so wrong to the point that I want to focus the board, but as soon as I turn it around and start popping off the nose everything clicks: pop feels amazing and flips are more level (when I land them). I'm sort of surprised, since it kind of goes against the conventional wisdom, but it felt pretty cool.

Crailstore has a really great shape guide. Best in the game.
G016 is the shape I think Carl skates, but that’s just based off of what this shape guide says, and also from staring at the tail when he skates on ig.
Mach󠭡kes a good point that strangely ventures and the short tail work together. Gotta pop off of the tip of the board tho.

You're totes right, today I switched back to a longer tail and wheelbase and it felt nice and roomy.

I was right? That's a first!! Sun shines on every dogs ass eventually, I suppose. Glad your new setup is treating you better.

I've been on thunders with a 6.4 something tail. Any smaller than that and I wouldn't be able to make it work. Are y'all skating trucks that extend or decrease your WB?

not sure who made the "guidelines" for what does and doesnt work with ventures (probably degros rhetoric) but short tails always gave me crispy pop, mellow or steep didnt matter

absolutely right about skating from/near the tip of the board with ventures, shorter tails make it a necessity
while cool-guying is a real phenomenon, studies show that 83% of all cool-guying incidents can be attributed to the cool-guyee being an awkward weirdo
