My DIY of the landowner being cool with it...
« on: March 02, 2021, 06:33:41 PM »
Been clearing out a patch of concrete just down from my house (that is on a dirt road) for the past year and a half. Have a pole jam, ledge, and propped up parking blocks for the past year and a half. Started pouring for a 3 foot bank and quarter pipe and the actual owner of the property started tripping. Working on negotiating with him, he used to skate, so he says (sent me his board wall and it consists of DGK and god know what else) but I don’t know how into it he is. PALS, help me out, what to do, what to do...

Buy him a du rag and some dead stock Supra’s. If he’s still not having it, try a good ol’ handy.

He's probably worried about liability for anyone else that goes there.

Maybe signs would appease him?

if he really used to skate(who collects DGK boards 🤔) it sounds like you might be able to reason with him and keep it going. Just like @pugmaster said it's most likely a liability thing.

Just be cool and try to think of a way to level with the owner/reassure him that you can take care of things

1.  Maybe appeal to some sort of manufactured sentimental shared brotherhood.  “But we’re skaters man...  that used to mean something...”

2.  Winner take all game of SKATE

3.  Mafioso intimidation: “It’d be a shame if my friend Luca Brasi over here had to get his hands dirty.  He hates getting his hands dirty.  Do you want him to get his hands dirty?  I don’t think you do.”
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

I'd ask if there's anyone stopping by that's not respecting the property, littering, etc.

A letter from a fake attorney (you) threatening a a bogus lawsuit unless you're allowed to build on the property.  It'll either work like a charm or immediately escalate things to an unmanageable degree.  You won't know which until you try.

haha so many fucking good replies here.

i was running low on laundry the other day and got into the "extra" sock drawer - the one for the old ones with a small hole. i found a pair of DGK black/green weed socks. i remember them from a day i showed up to my job at a shop pretty hungover/drunk with the rest of the staff, sockless for some reason i could never explain.

they have a hole in the left big toe area but i would be willing to give him these DGK socks if it helps the cause.

Not sure if he's on there but maybe buy a Cameo from Stevie Williams and type out what you want him to say regarding the DIY. Get Stevie to address the land owner by name and then show it to him while saying, "hey man, my friend sent this for you..."

- Will only work if Stevie is on Cameo and the landowner actually knows who is he is.

I would assume that a curb and a polejam is easily removed after you stop showing up, but a half-a-ton of whatever you end up pouring is gonna be a hassle to get rid of.
Ive heard of "deals" for whatever gets built on privat land they had to pool money for the eventual removal.

Yea that guy doesn't skate. You're fucked. Just pour concrete walls around all the entrances and windows to his home.

He's not into DGK, He's into Bruce Lee. Buy him a yellow and black jump suit.

throw in some sour patch kids for good measure, alternative idea- bugs bunny approach - start talking to him about how he should let you build on the land, then flip to saying he can't build on your land. He will then argue why he should be able to build, and therefore it's okay for you to as well.

Drop some modified bruce lee quotes on him. You probably need to get one tatted on your chest so he knows you're really down. These might work:

"Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one shape this 'crete."

"To hell with circumstances; I create opportunities illegal DIY skateparks."

"The more we value things your property rights, the less we value ourselves."

"If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is concrete wedges are what life is made up of."
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.

Honestly, let it go. Building a spot on someone else’s property isn’t worth it. Find land owned by the city or the department of transportation and build in secret and anonymously. Make it look like a group effort even if it is just you building. The community coming together is a much better angle than a one man vigilante project.

The best advice I can give is take that money and effort and buy your own property and build whatever you like without any repercussions or liability.

Building a DIY spot is romantic but unrealistic in a lot of places and situations. You can put time money and love into something only to have the city or property owner take it all away. Good luck bud.

I have been involved in DIYs on private and on public land. The DIY on private land has lasted for way longer. But then again I live in Germany where the burocracy is insane and people working for the city do everything by the book. It is way easier here to reason with an actual person than to talk to a beaurocrat.

I think you need to find out what that person is concerned about and then strategically adress that concern. If it is something legal than read up on the legal situation and adress his concerns and find a way to overcome it. If it is about concrete that he thinks he may have to remove one day than adress that. Find a way to make him feel good about you skating there. Make him feel like he's doing something for the community, something for the kids.

find out what beer he likes (or beverage of choice) and buy him a lot of it.... peace offerings go a long, long way.

ask him if a wooden ramp that can be removed would be a good compromise.

besides liability, he probably doesn't want the hassle of removing concrete eventually.
no, i live in an efficiency by myself and work in middle management like you, loser
