Fancy Lad did a collab with Ambition and there have been some cool clips of New England area skaters on these things. I believe some semi well known skate guys from Montreal have been known to ride em as well. Definitely looks fun for what it is, but the inability to properly turn makes everyone look like a tight-trucks baby Nyjah: point it straight and huck your trick.
For my tastes powsurfing looks way more fun, because it can actually carve, but unfortunately it does seem to require more fluffy conditions. Still, I hope to try it eventually... but alas I moved to Texas this year and there ain’t no snow around here (usually... last year was fucked and a 4 inch snowfall completely destroyed our infrastructure for WEEKS... but I digress). The beauty of a snow skate is that you can use it on any little hint of an incline covered in icy shitty hardpack. Very true to the versatility of a regular skateboard, you can kinda use it on anything.
A regular snowboard is surprisingly versatile and the metal edges mean it can even carve over ice to a certain extent, but hiking up a hill and then strapping in is a little frustrating compared to dropping your board and letting it rip. Still, a nice afternoon hike for some off-the-grid turns sounds really fun to me. Lift tickets and transit to a ski hill are obviously prohibitive for many people, whether in terms of money or just the time and hassle of schlepping out there. But if you have the means, it’s so so worth it. The feeling of gliding and sliding all over the place — without pushing — would appeal to almost any skateboarder, I think.
Anyway when someone can make a snow skate that actually turns for less than $100 or so, that will be the hottest shit.
