That isn't to say we can't find alternative crops / solutions to ensure that people don't starve out there and invest in those ways to ensure they work - I'm aware that a lot of them are dependant on opium for their livelyhood.
I stand by what I say though - heroin is one of the great evils in the world. I'm not against it "because it's illegal" - I skate and that's illegal in a lot of places so I don't necessarily think illegal activities are always bad.
When someone becomes an addict they cease to be a person, they become the drug doing whatever they can to get a fix. You can't trust a smackhead even if they were once your best friend.
Heroin causes so many problems, from crimes caused by addicts trying to get a fix to death. I personally know someone - he was a great guy - who died after trying heroin. Heroin = squalor, deprivation and death. Even if you haven't seen its effects first-hand, research it a little - hell read about Andy Roy or watch trainspotting if you need something a little less dry.
So yeah I stand by what I say. Burning the opium fields would rid the world of a great evil. If there is a stockpile, burn that too. Sure, help out the people that will be losing out if that is possible - but even if it is not, fuck it: I guarantee more people will be saved by the flames then will starve as a result so I'd still do it.

I don't give a fuck about Andy Roy. He's responsible for his own actions, and burning up some opium crops will not stop him from buying them.
