Braydon Sza told some a friend of mine that Stefan doesn't even ride for Nike anymore. They just paid him 4 mill to use his name and shit for the shoe.
[close]

They paid him $4,000,000 to put his name on a shoe? Is part of that agreement that he gets free shoes and wears those shoes when he skates? Are you talking about how he rides for Nike? Because you're describing exactly what it means to ride for Nike.
[close]

No, they bought the rights to his name. And he does still ride for Nike.
[close]
They didn't pay for his fucking name you dipshits, they paid him for his shoe design. Fortunately for Stefan, it would have looked shady as fuck for Nike to flat out remove his shoe royalties, so they paid him out.

$4 million? That sounds about right given the fact that these are now super popular amongst runners. I wonder how much he's made from Nike total. Like all his checks, royalties, etc combined. Dude must be getting PAID.

I read that they originally gave him a really high percent of royalties from sales of the shoe because they thought it wasn't going to sell well, that's why they bought out the design or whatever. He's one of the richest skateboarders for sure.

I thought Stefan and other Habitat guys were starting their own thing out of DLX? Seperate to anything Alex and Brian or AVE and Dill are doing?

I kind of like that everyone's leaving. Feels like skateboarders are taking back skateboarding.
[close]

Thats what i hope is happening, i hope skating "dies" and it fully returns to being from skaters to skaters.

On some phoenix shit. But with all this news it seems like DNA may be down for the count, we'll see what new companies spawn I guess. With team handsome product will probably sell good.

From what I understand, he no longer gets royalties from the shoe.

The story as I had it told to me by someone involved with Nike:
-Nike developed some super tech pro model and Stefan said no i just want a boat shoe, so they made the janoski, paying him a high percentage as royalties because they thought it wouldn't sell.
- The shoe went 'viral' and as a result they ended up paying him a shit ton of money.
- They brought out the team edition to try and capture some sales from the janoski. Didn't work.
- They lowered the quality of the Janoski, but non-skaters had started buying them en masse at this point so that didn't work either.
- In the end they thought fuck this and paid Stefan off the $4mill. Now they own the rights to the shoe and no longer have to pay him royalties. Supposedly the quality is back up now as a result of all this. I currently have a pair and they do seem ok, I bought them before I heard said story and the pops one (i didnt skate much for 6 years due to injury), they will be my last corpo shoes.

i'm stoked for stefan.....right place/right time

no one at nike or stefan could have guessed that shoe was gonna be a massive as it's been.
i heard he offered etnies the same design and they rejected it so he split to nike.

if he can get 4mil for the design/name, would love to no how much prod's yearly nike salary is.

If Stefan kept his royalty payment plan he would have made way more than 4 million. I see them shits everywhere.

Exactly. Not only does it skate great, it feels and looks good for people outside of skateboarding too. That combined with the Nike association... Now thats a winner for everyone. Im glad he's getting paid.

first of all his parts aren't average, he just makes skating looks so good and easy. but when will people understand that you don't have to be the best at skating to sell the most products or make the most money? you just have to have a style and personality that people want to emulate in some way. pretty much if you're cool and skate cool others will want to be like you in some way therefore they support you by buying your product. then it gets popular and the masses who don't even know you see everyone else wearing your shit and buy it too...thats how the cycle works. there are plenty of dudes out there that are amazing, but that's where marketability comes in. you could be the best skateboarder in the world and is doesn't mean you're going to have the best selling shoe or even a shoe at all, because if your style sucks and your personality sucks no one is gonna care about or wanna buy your shit you and you'll have to rely on winning contests to make money.

Even if it is true (and it very well may be) I don't think it hurts Habitat at all. Janoski is rad, but I can't think of many kids who even know who he is...and they most likely even have his name on their shoes.

you must hang out with really young kids then, all my friends know who he is.. then again your probably 15 and can barley ollie. hoserlife.

I always thought was happened was he just lost his royalties cause of his 4 million payout but still recieves a monthly check as well as his free products. I actually think it was a good choice for him because I would think there has to be some point where kids won't always wear Janoskis all the time. I am sure he could have gotten more in the long run with royalties but there's nothing wrong in wanting the cash right away. I mean that is more than what can be said about Omar. I think that one shoe he got was his first and last by Nike. I don't think that shoe sold at all.

yeah the cupsole Salazar's didnt see well & i dont think the Salazar LR's do too well either, despite being a decent vulc shoe.

Im sure over the long term he'd make more than 4 million in royalties but I cant blame him for wanted to take the money up front. When else are you gotta get a guaranteed $4 million off one deal? shit between that and his regular nike checks + free shoes & clothes dude is set for life at this point.

I am pretty sure it was more like $3mill, and the quality thing is still a rumor that I really cant comment on because I dont skate in his shoe, but I have heard it from people not knowing anything about the industry side of the situation. Janoski was receiving 3 "credits" a shoe from Nike (credits is what they tell us so we won't receive an actual number). In comparison, every pro basketball player including Labron only receives 1 "credit" per shoe. in 2011 Janoski basically trumped every Nike athlete in credits and thats where the deal came from. Im sure it is a win-win situation, had Nike kept him on that program they probably would have done nothing to help his shoe and let it fade away to save a few bucks, while Stefan now has a big contract and Nike can promote the shit out of the shoe to come out on top.
