From what I understand, he no longer gets royalties from the shoe.
The story as I had it told to me by someone involved with Nike:
-Nike developed some super tech pro model and Stefan said no i just want a boat shoe, so they made the janoski, paying him a high percentage as royalties because they thought it wouldn't sell.
- The shoe went 'viral' and as a result they ended up paying him a shit ton of money.
- They brought out the team edition to try and capture some sales from the janoski. Didn't work.
- They lowered the quality of the Janoski, but non-skaters had started buying them en masse at this point so that didn't work either.
- In the end they thought fuck this and paid Stefan off the $4mill. Now they own the rights to the shoe and no longer have to pay him royalties. Supposedly the quality is back up now as a result of all this. I currently have a pair and they do seem ok, I bought them before I heard said story and the pops one (i didnt skate much for 6 years due to injury), they will be my last corpo shoes.
