I think Burnett has attempted to make more brandable items of late: like constantly mentioning Scramblers, or vets of the Lunatic Fringe.  Badges of honor that show you’ve passed the test to be allowed in Thrasher.

I was flipping through some old Thrashers the other day and it reminded me of a video where Marc Johnson said his favorite part of the mag was that "AVE is always creepin" talking about the subscription insert they have that used this photo. It changed before Jake Phelps died, but I still miss it.

Can’t help but notice that chin every time I see this photo. It’s the most memorable part of the photo

I recently subscribed to the magazine when I was injured and wanted to take in as much content as possible . My last issue was probably around 03-05. Boy do I regret that shit. I don't know how you could be over the age of twelve and read this. I should known better though, even as a kid I preferred Skateboarder and TWS.

Cutting expenses and had to drop the subscription a couple of years ago now, but I think everything in print was getting slimmer and it was harder to get quality whereas once there were so many options.

I do miss being able to look at things on paper, the same way I can watch a dvd, rather than just seeing it all on the computer or on a screen, but it also saves money I don't have to spend on that sort of thing too.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

burnetts been running thrasher to a degree people don't even realize before jake passed away.  it's pretty much been his thing for years with jake as an honorary editor
[close]

jake could not have been making much cause i used to see his name on the delivery sign in sheets for postmates and stuff when i was still a bike messenger.

I'd love to know what the money is like at Thrasher. It's a media gig, so it's not going to be that high for most staff, but as the editor and somewhat face of the brand, you'd like to think it was half decent. Burnett wears a few more hats than Phelps too with photography and organizing more trips  etc. They must have a lot more money coming in the last decade or so, with being the main mag out there, main website to drop videos and of course the fact that their brand exploded onto the mainstream. Them Thrasher hoodies probably bring in some good loot. Like how much is Tony V. worth these days?

It's pretty heck ride now

Oh it's hella heck ride, you got that right... But not hell ride. Being sober and getting surrounded with positive people and influences is not hell ride. That Phelps edge goes with him to the grave.

i tried to watch king of the road once and got so much secondhand embarrassment i had to turn it off

why do you have to do so much screaming to work at thrasher and when did constant screaming become
a part of skating

Have you ever caught yourself pulling a "Yeaaaaaah" at a demo? I've never tapped my board on the coping or ground, so I'm pretty happy about that. I've definitely "yeaaaaaah"ed in my time though. I think I've also said a few "oh shiiiiit" on a dazzling maneuver being landed. Never hugged my boys for a trick though. I think I became self aware at a Mullen, Lee, Gonz, Chatman, Dune demo in 1990. Anyway, I was just thinking about that. This does not answer your question, just a statement.

I overthink applauding others' tricks at the skatepark. On one hand, I'm genuinely stoked for someone when they land a trick. On the other, I'm worried it comes off as patronizing or sarcastic if it's a trick that's easy for them, or if I don't celebrate enthusiastically enough, or if I celebrate too enthusiastically when it's a simple trick. But if I don't do anything, I worry I come off as arrogant. So, I end up being super self-conscious about how to behave at the skatepark, which is why I skate alone a lot.

You guys sound like lunatics lol

i would assume he's worth however much momma Gwynn gives he and his sister each month

i can't believe it took until the second page of this thread for the Vitello name to come up, because nothing happens in or at the mag without a Vitello OK....(edit:) although i know that the Vitellos have always given people like Phelps and Burnett pretty open reign creatively which is of course the most profitable approach.

a random--i was fortunate to work at the mag when the warehouse was still on the first floor of the Underwood building (along with the Slap office), and KT, Fausto, and Ed Riggins were still there everyday and still did a lot...I was on the steps up to Ed's office smoking a joint after lunch one day and Fausto came out of the warehouse and smiled and said "don't let Ed catch you smoking that"...

I always say what's up to Mike Burnett when I see him,but we have never formally met. He is nice enough to say hi,but can't hide the "who the hell is that" face. Cheap thrills for me.

The Vitellos keep Thrasher to a certain caliber,Burnett will keep it up with times, along with Sieben.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

That picture was also used for subscription renewal letters.

If anything, I think they've actually taken a stab at writing stories with more substance than the generic "team x travels to y country." That said, they were never really known for provocative content (outside of a PG13 ad or two) or interesting writing. The only thing that feels like it's missing is perspective from Jake being one of the guys in the van (rather than an outsider) which TSM and Transworld didn't have.

The 80s, newsprint version of Thrasher I grew up with did have some interesting writing, though I found out years later that most of it was Craig Stecyk writing under various names.

Events and Merchandising are a big part of why Thrasher is still around whereas every other US skate mag has folded. I also don't know what that image you shared is/where it's from, but if something with as much influence as Thrasher is encouraging kids to wear masks or shields, I'm all for it.

I have a soft spot for thrasher, probably for the nostalgia reasons, whenever im in a store and see the mag ill usually pick it up and then take months to read it... i literally just finished the september issue and have the next 3 piled up on my coffee table

Phelps had better captions on the site. All the new captions are bland, recycled, and weak.

it must be crazy when chico sells you something and the tables switch from "give me my money chico" to "giving my money to chico"
