shape advice
« on: July 05, 2021, 02:13:51 AM »
not sure if this warrants separate thread, but couldn't figure out which one d be appropriate.

alright, I need some advice
I never really cared about my board specifics too much, I'll skate anything between an 8 and 8.5 as long as the nose is not too pointy and it has some concave. but, recently got this local shop deck which seems perfect/fine shape wise except I keep ghost popping my nollie tricks. And so I'm turning to you guys for advice. What shape/brand/manufacturer should I be looking into if I want a nice concave-y, fat but flat nosed board. Twin-tail sounds interesting to try but I figure any twin tail is gonna be on the pointier side of the spectrum. Had a couple quasis and liked those but I'm not sure if I they make twin tail-ish shapes or what.

idc about wheelbase (yet?)

tl;dr
hot sk8r in your area looking for boardshape: fat and flat nose, reasonable concave. 8 - 8.5

Regarding the twin tails, the 8.3 real/krooked twin tail has a rather fat nose(&tail). Actually the 8.25 too, they are more of a twin tail/nose hybrid than a true twin tail. Concave strongly depends on the position in the press unfortunately, they come in medium flat (roman numeral IV on top) and super steep (roman numeral I on top). So if you have the chance to look at them in a skateshop go for it.

But they have a rather long wheelbase, which you don't care about yet, but you might wanna measure the wb of a few decks you really liked.

Blind definitely do flatter boards. I've only skated their flat concave in 7.75, though, but I'd be surprised if they didn't press that same shape in 8.25-ish.

I don't have the exact dimensions for you, as it was a few years ago, but it was basically as shallow as they come, with very flat kicks.

What have you had before that has worked (board brand if you don't know the woodshop) and what is the current board you are on?

Between different woodshops there are some significant differences, (sometimes even different molds from the same woodshop too) but that will often determine what feels good and what feels awkward for you, which is often different to other skaters too, as everyone has their preferences and there is no right or wrong to this.

Quasi is PS Stix, which is often about medium, but could go either way.

When you say "fat and flat" do you mean the wider nose boards with mellow concave or having flat angles on the kicks, not the concave through the nose too, eg BBS has side to side concave running through the kicks of all their boards, more spoon shaped if you need an image, but even then some are more mellow and some are steeper.

The brands that have "full shaped boards" include WKND, FA / Hockey, Quasi, Real, Krooked and Antihero Full or Full SE just to start with, eg Real Full shapes here:

https://www.realskateboards.com/construction/

Woodshop thread here as a reference (on the first page), more so to look up various brands too but I know some people ask questions about different boards in that thread which is quite ok too:

https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=116070.0

Often the most visual thread is the setups thread, which usually has pics of top and bottom, which helps, 950+ pages so lots to look at:

* Sorry you probably already know all of that, but at least putting it up might help anyone else looking too.

I'm a believer that wb > width.
Since you're saying that you don't mind if is 8 or 8.5 I would say that is the same for you, wb over everything else (pretty much).
So check the wb on that board that you liked so much and go from there.

just a local shop board, idk the manufacturer, something European that's not jart

yea fat and flat was reffering to the nose only, wide squarish noses with a mellow kick. As for the concave (in the middle) idk if I'm a I,II, III, IVor V, is there a way to tell on psstix, are the nummerals there too?

I'll look into the krooked worrest mentioned before, been a while since I had one, usedta be my go to, krooked.

or I'll end up with a quasi again, it'll be whatever I can get my hands on when I need one i guess

BBS woodshop or more specifically DLX boards are the only ones to have the number in the press system that I know of, four boards per press.

Some like PS Stix and Clutch use similar presses with multiple boards in each, but other woodshops, especially Dwindle and others based in China all have adopted the single press system, as every single board is identical in shape, feel and concave, but they can have up to ten in a stacked press so put out more boards per press than others.  They also have significantly different molds they use at Dwindle, with the info marked on the board, eg medium concave mellow kick or mellow concave steep kick, etc.

It would be interesting to compare your current board to others, usually put them on their back and see how high the body of the board sits off the ground, but a steeper nose would definitely cause ghost pop a lot more than a mellow one.

I drive over / park on the kicks of my boards to mellow them out some, as per others and it does work without killing the deck and makes it a lot more comfortable for me, but is a bit out there and some people are kind of scared of doing something like that with a new board, in case they mess up.

I'll use OP's thread instead of creating a new one because the topic kinda fits.

I'm looking for the opposite - pointy nose and tail - like Baker boards.

Just set up a fresh deck and realized that's the board shape I enjoy most skating and looking at.

Any other brands that offer shapes similar to Baker boards - with the highlight being the pointy nose and tail?

What size do you usually ride?

Baker, Birdhouse, Deathwish, Heroin all use the same shapes, all out of Baker Boys Distribution, but even then some are bigger and wider, eg I just got a few Baker 8.5 decks and they are quite wide and round, but I know some of the not so wide boards are a bit more pointy looking.

Some brands have specifically listed "taper tip" which are much more pointy than usual, eg Santa Cruz (but also other Dwindle boards).

Most DLX boards are not wide at all, apart from the "Full" versions - had a lot of those over the years and they are always just right for me.

Yes  most of the 8.25 size decks are pretty similar in shape from those brands mentioned, so any board from Baker in that size is more pointy, just not the B2 as they are the squared nose and tail shape, which most shops should put on the listings, or you can definitely see in person.
