What is the vans squiggle anyway?
« on: May 13, 2020, 09:41:44 PM »
I took a shower when I came in from skating earlier. As the hot water danced it's rhythmic dance across my shoulders, my mind wandered and I realized I have no idea what the Vans logo is. Anyone?

Interestingly, each of Adidas’ three stripes represents a Gibb brother.  Apparently the founder was a big Bee Gees fan.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

We just talking about the side piece of leather on the Old Skool and Sk8-Hi and such?

I've always heard it called the "Jazz Stripe" by fellow nerds like that PillowHeat guy, but lately on Vans' website and other corporate run verbiage, they call it the "side stripe".

According to that PillowHeat collector dude, the stripe made it's debut on the Style 36 (which turned into the Old Skool), so all it is is a "tribute" line to the top eyerow and the collar line, as far as I can tell.

Haha yeah, I don't think these rando China knockoff shoes you found on Amazon came out before the Old Skool in 1977.

The original store in Santa Monica had a mural that referred to it as the "Flying V". The squiggle used to have sharper angles so I always thought it was an abstraction of a lighting bolt (a ubiquitous logo in the late '70s used by Lightning Bolt surfboards). I have zero evidence to support this other than the timing and when one of the Van Doren owners branched off to start his own shoe company, he completely appropriated the high top and replaced the squiggle with a lighting bolt.

I worked at a Vans store twice, and yeah they call it a jazz stripe.  Not sure if it got phased out or even explained otherwise.
