Need help on Post-Modern Skateboard subculture identity.
« on: February 24, 2009, 11:38:19 AM »
Yep, I'm writing a paper on Skate Culture. Now this is way harder than it sounds, mainly because I have a lack of real sources for this piece. It wouldn't be a problem if I could just go off on my opinion's for 5 pages, but I need some sources. So does anyone have any good legitimate enough looking source I could use for my Paper? Stuff on Skate culture/history from the 90's on is more of what I'm looking for. No 80's or earlier stuff please. Thanks!

maybe independents 20th anniversary book or something similar (magazine anniversary issues, etc...)

also i think that slap recent magazine with the reality show cover might be a good one.

you could probably use any of the skate books like disposable, thrasher's insane terrain or the art books and trace the growing mainstream legitimacy/capitalization/branding of the culture....like ed templeton's books or beautiful losers.

also search nytimes archives cuz they seem to write about skateboarding like 3 times per month.
i saw my grandma bail off a 4 set once in my house and she even got up and came to red lobster after.

I did a similar paper there are some documentaries out there I had three, I used
Stoked:The Rise and Fall of Gator
Lords of Dogtown ZBoys (cliche I know)
The Man Who souled the World
They got me some good quotes and stuff, they talk about skateboarding as a subculture and whatnot and you can find torrents for them online pretty easy (I think)
