Ted Barrow used to post on here?
[close]

No not never. I posted an e-mail that Berra had sent to Ted that Ted had forwarded to me. But I posted it from my own account (this one) so the whole thing was ridiculous. He had nothing to do with it but they were trying to call him out. Actually used to think that Donovan guy was kind of funny but when he became Berra's little lap dog SP hunter I knew he was a kook.

Ted Barrow had a decent skate related blog with a fleeting allusion to Berra/Berrics that may have caught the radar of his Xenu SP patrol. I can't remember the exact context of the post (the blog has since vanished), but it seemed fairly innocuous. The whole incident of an alleged Berra messageboard imposter, followed by delusions that every anonymous poster was Ted Barrow (or his Thetan), sparked the Slap entrance warning and general hate here from the L. Ron camp. At least, that was the general consensus of it.

Another good thing about Berra is that his kook level makes Andy Mac look like John Cardiel.

- Great backside flip

- Blunt-KF out on vert in the 90s

- The skating in his 'The End' part

- Juliette Lewis for a spell

- The Berrics wasn't built by Sea Org slave labor. Probably.

Also, Aberrican Me.

Other than the few that had to do with the skateboard industry, these were seriously groundbreaking.

These were the only articles or pieces by a major skate outlet that told stories about regular skateboarders, and not pros or industry people.

With the exception of the obligatory forward from the editor, 100% of everything written in Thrasher, Transworld, TSM, and every other major print or media outlet is about professional skating or people in the industry of skating. A few of the smaller websites, that are a little less beholden to the industry, have at least some articles that criticize elements of pro skating and the its surroundings. Jenkem, Monster children, etc.

I got into it with Brink about this on social media once. And his answer was basically, 'you do it then.' I get his point. But I have a job and don't have aspirations to work in 'skating.' And it totally speaks to the mentality from the industry about their ability to take constructive criticism. Or talk about anything besides themselves.

I recall when I was younger (somewhere between 12-14) a TWS article that was called something along the lines of "Don't Quit your Day Job" and had small interviews with a few photos from just regular skaters and talked about their actual jobs. I recall one of them was a firefighter and one of them was a financial planner, I can't remember the rest. It was pretty cool. I pretty much knew I'd never be pro and I was always scared that I would grow up and quit skating, so I enjoyed reading about dudes who kept doing it even after getting a real job.

That's cool. Maybe it's hyperbole that I say 100%, but skate mags aren't really interested in anything but documenting pro skating. I honestly think that the people that are running them think that it helps skating, overall, if they cover the lives and accomplishments of pro skaters. And they do inspire us to skate better and, possibly, to keep skating.

You could also argue that they are preaching to the choir, instead of the mildly interested. And when people are window shopping, are they going to buy when they could be intimidated? People can talk all they want about not being able to 'relate' with what Nyjah can do, but he's the boy next door. Olson, FA, Bronze 56k rep the opposite side of Street League/Berrics, which is great, but their vibe could definitely be scary to a newcomer. So that being said, what can skate media offer in addition to documenting pro skating and their sponsors? What are they saying to someone that just skates with their friends and is happy with that? Berra offered something different with Aberrican Me. But, like with 'Don't Quit Your Day Job,' Ross Capiccionni isn't pro for Adidas, and that's ultimately why the media will cut a series like that.

Don't think anyone got this one at the time but maybe now with Slap's new understanding of Dianetics it will be more appreciated.
