Mehdi Hasan was correct when he said, "We should all condemn the killing of Charlie Kirk, but we don't need to participate in the white washing of his record." @excitableboy, the first part applies to some posts here and the second part relates to your post. 

The kookery of killing Kirk is the same crime as the killing the Democratic politicians in Minnesota. Different rationals, but the same crime. Murder. It is similar to someone trying to kill Penn's governor by throwing molotov cocktails into his house with the gov and his family there. It is similar to the plot to kidnap the gov of Michigan.

And, while Kirk was disgusted with the idea of empathy, "I can't stand the word empathy, actually. I think empathy is a made-up, new age term that — it does a lot of damage." It might actually be the best response because it is the opposite of escalation. I have no interest in reading about random political voices or politicians being murdered, and I especially don't want to hear about Stewart, Hasan, the dem politician from Texas who is good with social media or Newsom being murdered as an act of revenge/"war."

The killing was not the proper way to deal with him. Ignoring, making fun of, and creating a similar left wing machine to energize young people was the correct response. Now, some kooky Utah kid has forced everyone into the only correct response, condemning the murder (and making sure others condemn the murder of the politicians in Minn, the attempted murder of Penn's gov, the kidnapping plot of Michigan's gov, the shooting of Gabby Giffords, and so on) . The death penalty is dumb, it is even dumber without due process. And, we shouldn't pretend he was centrist, mainstream or for free speech. Hasan said something Kirk didn't like and his first response was not to accept others have different opinions but to suggest he should be removed from his position on TV and then he should be deported, despite Hasan being a citizen.

To not derail more I'll respond to this briefly. Mainstream does not mean majority. The percentages you give (thanks for looking them up) clearly show that these views go clean through the American Overton. Half of tv spouts it. It's dismal but that is mainstream, which is not the same as saying Kirk was a centrist. I take your comment about other opinions Kirk held. That's why I asked, not because I am out 'to whitewash'. You are right - the left does well to call the likes of him out at every turn, it's the only recourse. I never said otherwise.

I agree with your sentiment. But there are plenty of politically astute non-voters who have concluded that both "sides" are indeed, "bad." There is no need to discredit those who exercise their politics outside the broken two-party system and work in other ways to bring about meaningful change.
