Visited my family and went to Big White (got a discount from a family member with a seasons pass). Weather was great, no new pow but the snow was still pretty good. Happy to be boarding again and hope I can get out to Silverstar or Big White again this week. Happy New Years PALS, hopefully lots of snow for all this new year

I've hit fifteen flat fifteen street double kinks on a snowboard and I can tell you it doesn't even come close to how scary it is to ollie a skateboard onto a fivestair handrail for ants.

This isn't the snowboard depreciation thread, but of course, you'd be the one to make a post to boost your own ego.

I'm calling you out on this bullshit post. Post your 15 flat 15 footy kraut boy, or stfu. Also, you must suck at skateboarding.
.

Haha nothing like calling people out for deprecation and then going "you must suck" at them, you absolute clown. I don't need to prove myself to you. Anyone who grew up doing both sports knows how much steeper the skateboard learning curve is. Nothing deprecatory about it, snowboarding is still one of the funnest things to do if you can afford it. But please wear a helmet, everyone.

Rode Sunday afternoon at Crystal after snowshoeing with my girl and her friend. It was quite choppy but there were still some pow stashes to be found. Thinking of taking off next Monday afternoon to hit Snoqualmie.

Only have three days so far, all of them at Mammoth. It has been d-i-s-m-a-l for Southern Calfornia. Snow Valley got three inches last night, the first of the season. Going to Mammoth at the end of January and then to Bear Valley in March. That could literally be all the riding I do this year at this rate.
ok thanks

Stuck in the same boat. Went to bear last weekend and made the most out of it. Shittiest season i've ever come across since riding their from 2017. Mammoth has saved me and already paid off my ikon but it's so expensive to stay the weekend up there that i've got to put that on hold. Really hoping it snows again Thursday and snow summit opens up some more runs.

It’s been a mixed bag this year.

I’m dealing with losing my best friend, my wife due to issues beyond my control, and we are separating after 6 years of her getting increasingly hostile.

So I’ve been getting steadily more depressed, to the point where I didn’t feel anything seeing the first snow, which never failed to bring me joy since I was a child.

I didn’t bother doing the regular pre-season rituals (washing and rewaterproofing my gear, setting stuff up, watching vids) and didnt feel any excitement at all.

It’s been hard to get motivated, especially since I work as an instructor. And that lack of excitement is a red flag that I am really quite sick.

So we will hopefully be separating later in the spring. But there have been some small bright spots.

One is my daughter who has picked im snowboarding.

She’s 6, and I had her on a board since she was 2, but around 4 she hit a wall and not wanting to go on her toes, so I didn’t push it and we went to skiing, which she loved.

But the past September, a boy in her class who has a skater dad invited her to come skate at his house, where the dad made some extremely kid-friendly ramps.

Until then she skated a bit with me, but wasn’t really that excited to do it.

Not until she decided to learn how to drop into the smallest ramp, and after she did that, it was on. She was asking me to take her skating every weekend after that.

And I explained that snowboarding is way easier than skating, so she gave it another go and second time out she was turning, so that’s been really touching to see her fall in love with it.

Plus, it’s been an unusually good season here in Nagano, and not that busy, so I’ve had a little time to ride and do some lines that haven’t been open much the last couple of seasons.

And despite the low stoke, snowboarding is vastly better than not snowboarding. A powder day in the trees here and there has been healing.

Now I’m on a bullet train to Akita to a smaller resort for instructor training (tomorrow is a free day to go riding with the other instructors) and that’s something to be grateful for.

I’m trying to be every mom’s favorite skater’-&&

damn heavy post. I remember we talked about relationship struggles in another thread.... (am still dealing with the problem myself, but things have been getting better).
hopefully things will get better for you after separation, from what you said it seems it might be for the best. in any case it's gotta be real hard, I can only imagine. Good luck with all that and enjoy the snow, man! It is healing, as is skating with your kid. Hope you get out that funk and reach out to pals whenever you feel like it! Best of wishes to you, man. Remember than doing something that you like will always take you closer to the happy place, even if your excitement level isn't as overflowing as it usually is. "A bad day riding is better than a good day not riding" or whatever the sticker with the shaka hands next to it says.

Hope you get some pow at least — been getting a lot of pics and vids from friends being absolutely buried over there, looks insane.

Thank you for checking in, Skibb and Frenchie.
It will be ok, what will happen between my wife and I is what will need to happen.

As for snowboarding, we had a nice couple of days of fresh snow during the course, and we got to rip some classic Japanese tree runs at the resort we were at, with a few bottomless turns.

Hopefully still have a good month more of this before spring comes.

Thanks for sharing the story of your daughter's boarding journey mate - you're going through it now but reassuring to know you understand you'll come out of it in a better place. Look after yourself, the stoke will return.

Nerd alert - musings about gear choice for a snowboarder on their 3rd season ever

Figuring out what I really want from my snowboard and ski setups, been working as a lifty this year and really trying to focus on the whole "1-ski-quiver" thing to cut back on owning a bunch of shit I don't use enough.

Started on a Slash deck, true twin, regular camber, stiff and poppy. 154 or 155cm iirc. (I'm 5'9" 150lbs)
Cheapest/lightest Union bindings, the Flite I believe, in M.
ThirtyTwo Lashed boots in an 8.5. had a good time but wanted a softer board. Break-in on the boots sucked as I have wide-ass feet.

Ended up getting a Public "general" deck in 153, detuned it and started hitting boxes and rails.
Paired this deck with some union Force bindings in a Small, and some 32 tm-2's in an 8 wide. Was looking at the boots and bindings from more of a skiing lens, performance wise, with as small and stiff of everything I could fit. Worked wonderfully, though the break in(lengthwise) on the boots was rough the first few days, even after heat molding. Turns out I think 32's size 8 runs a little small. The older size chart on my past-season Lashed had it as a 41, but these say 40.5, and fuck that. They did end up being pretty comfy, but I prefer a more upright stance and didn't like the feeling of my toes touching the end, whereas in ski boots I don't mind it at all.

Picked up a ride warpig in M(151cm). Wanted to try something more serious to match the vibe of my boots and bindings and my ski setup. Didn't like how wide or stiff it was, didn't care if it worked well in powder or not because I'd probably always reach for my skis anyways, though I do believe a snowboard is the superior powder tool for fun. In hindsight, I definitely should've gotten the S(148cm). That would've been a great setup, but I don't know how often I'd use it considering my riding style is more loose and upright, and there's way less torsional flex on the Pig, and my feet are pretty small for such a wide board. If I were serious about going fast all the time, the 148 pig, forces, and tm-2's is my perfect setup honestly. But the fastest I've ever went was on the public deck 😆 albeit with the tm-2's and forces probably doing most of the work there 🤷‍♀️

Realized I like a softer boot in the same size as my skate shoes(8.5) but I did like the extra width on the special wide models.

So after all that, I think the only snowboard I need for now is this setup I landed on recently:

Public Disorder deck, 152, detuned
Union Strata bindings, M
32 Lashed, 8.5 wide

And I sold all my other snowboard stuff

Also sold my park skis, and I don't think I'm going to buy crazy powder skis or super lightweight backcountry skis or any of that shit either.

Ski setup for anyone who cares

-stock Moment Wildcat 108, 179cm, mounted at rec (-6cm from center)
-CAST 2.0 pivot 15's, DINs at 9, 95mm brake fits purrrfect on the 108s, nice and tucked in, no worries of hooking em on eachother
-Tecnica Cochise 130, 25.5, toes punched out, booster straps
-Zipfit world cup sidewinder liners, tecnica spoilers
-cork SOLE footbeds in all my snow shit
-neon Scott team issue poles with hockey tape to extend the grip, NO straps ever, pomoca skins
Giro ledge helmet and the bigger size Oakley line miners

Where am I

What's happening

2" at the base 🥴
Still have had a lot of fun
The bigger terrain park never opened so far 🙁

Was gifted my buddy’s old burton operator that’s about 15 years old and got some new vans boots. Never been on a hill before hoping to set up a jib and rail in my backyard soon.

I wish I had the snow to do such a thing, loved doing that as a kid! I'll have to upload the snowboard videos me and my friends made in like '02-'04 if I get the time, they are fun to watch from time to time and remind me how much I loved snowboarding, lamenting the fact that I haven't been on the slopes in over a decade...

Growing up in an area with plenty of ski resorts, our middle school would take us to the mountains ever Tuesday during the winter and we could ride the day for free. Me and my buddy had passes so we would actually stay until last call and have our parents pick us up, something that definitely couldn't be done today with all the liability bullshit.

I haven’t really done park stuff in like a decade, occasionally hit some boxes or smaller jumps while riding through the mountain. I usually just do blue/black runs and trees when conditions are good.

The past few weeks I’ve been goin to a free park in my city that has a pretty damn impressive terrain park on what’s basically a sled hill and it’s a lot of fun. Finally relearned back 360s yesterday, hoping to get more comfortable on non-ride on stuff too. I’m takin it slow since I’m comin off a knee injury but it’s been a lot of fun. Only issue is how tiring it is to walk up the hill lol.

Also taking a random trip to Santa Fe tomorrow and we’re gonna stop at Taos which I’ve always wanted to check out. Stoked on riding this season for sure even though the snow hasn’t been great.

Betting that you're referencing Let It Ride: The Craig Kelly Story when talking about a video on CK but give this a viewing if you haven't already, that video is pretty iconic in the snowboard video world.

Absinthe Films' Microdose series is somewhat similar to Epicly Later'd where they highlight a certain snowboarder, find playlists for them on their YouTube channel.

For more traditional interviews, snowboarding's major podcast is The Bomb Hole and similar to The Nine Club where it's a biographical interview of a rider but host Chris Grenier does research on his guest and have sound bites of friends of the guest asking questions. They also interviewed skaters from time to time.

Excited to get out Sunday and Monday, was sick for the last 2 weeks and wasn't in any condition to ride. Picked up a barely used set of last year's Now Select Pro bindings on eBay for $80, stoked to try them out. Compared to the Unions these feel bully

I think I finished out my season this weekend, coverage in the Catskills is getting pretty thin. Temps in the NYC area are in the 50s every day, so I feel good about moving onto spring activities.

All things considered we had a pretty good season on the east coast. No massive blizzards, but there were consistent small snowfalls at least every week or so. I got out most weekends and there was usually at least a dusting of fresh stuff. Compared to the last few years this is a massive improvement.

I took one 'big trip' up to Jay Peak in northern VT a few weeks ago. The winds were crazy but it didn't stop snowing all weekend and it was pretty fun in the trees. Upper mountain lifts were closed most of the time but a short hike could get you into some nice soft turns. It seems gnarly up there, definitely not great for the heated-bubble-lift crowd.

They're still getting snow all week and will probably have a great spring in Northern New England but I'm tired of all that driving and ready to just go surfing locally.

Sorry to everyone having a weak season in other regions but I'm sure you still don't have half the ice and freeze-thaw that we usually do on the ice coast  ;D

Rode Crystal  last Friday and the previous Sunday. Sunday was the best day I had all season. The lines were insane but the storm all week made for some nice turns. Got up Friday afternoon, snow was wet and sticky. Main runs were skied out but there was still plenty of goods if you were willing to venture off. Also got a few days on the now bindings. I don't necessarily feel like their skate tech made the ride more skatey but they offer a very damp ride. The toe strap isn't the greatest though

It’s been a long year here in Nagano. Record amounts of snow, but worked through most of it. We still have a deep base, and the bigger hills will be open until May, maybe even a bit later.

Around this time of year sand from China blows over the ocean and covers the mountains, making the slush slower than usual, but it’s just a board of spring riding here.

The sands are blowing, and it’s been unusually warm. My work finally ended on Monday, so I went out for a slushy snowskate, because that usually turns up the stoke after a long season of regular snowboarding.

Headed out in the morning to Hakuba, but couldn’t even see the mountain’s (I live in the valley) from all the dust. Turns out Hakuba was all closed due to the wind, so instead went to a little secluded family hill in the town south. Never been there before, only green and blue runs, but I heard they have a fun park this year.

Turned out to be the right pick. End of season slushy park, full 90’s style, lots of rails and boxes, and a 4 meter step-down kicker.

Had a blast trying to air the kicker on the snowskate (got it once) and tried the work the snowskate down the zipline (a single-mogul track popular over here)

Got worked trying to shuvit of a wide box, and am still sore, but happy.
