Hey Australian pals, it seems like skateboarding is pretty fucking big in your country. Are there big local brands there? Can these guys get on something there and make money? I'm just curious because you hear about all kinds of Australian skaters riding for US brands but if so many people skate then a lot of people are buying product and that money isn't really staying there when it seems to me could. Enlighten me please.

Off the top of my head there are a lot of homie brands and whatnot, Pass~Port are pretty big internationally speaking. Problem is most of these companies are tiny and can't/don't/won't pay as much as a big gun like element would for guys like Durrant. Private Joy is absolutely sick though, slept on but not a brand I see Dennis on either.

Pass Port is probably the only one with the market share to do so, there are a few brands that do support the industry in any way they can, brands like Elan, Four, Xen & Folklore stand out with their influence with being a stepping stone for the skaters trying to make it within the industry but at the end of the day it comes down to few key things, not enough profit margins to be able to pay riders, not enough shops and too many brands taking slices out of the small industry we have.
Luckily we still have a shoe companies carrying good dudes through the struggle... even globe looks after people pretty well over here

Both Dennis and Alex left because Element Australia is trash, but they weren't dropped/cut. Nobody wants to skate for Element Aus.

Dennis is going to skate for Time, an old Aussie company which recently rebooted, I'm pretty sure.

I wonder if Shane has the P-rod care about rippers who dont get shine. If he is, he should put Tommy Fyn on the team.

Element Australia is a joke, they're more a clothing brand than a board brand in 90% of the publics eye.

They even had/have a flagship store in the heart of melbourne, and it felt like a mall chain over paneled in plywood with shitty music, filled with dads who wanna buy hip shirts

isn't that the ethos of element stores?
The '80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Great opportunity for Shane to get some hype for April. Can't think of many more skaters he can onboard that would have the same effect of making his brand cool/worth following.

He just got Diego Najera, which to 99.9% of Shane's demographic is a way bigger and 'cooler' addition.

Biggest and best is Pass~Port (Sydney based). Neither Alex Lawton or Dennis Durrant or anyone else who was on element aus will get on passport though. Next few biggest brands are Hoddle, which is passport's melbourne based sister company, Jack Kirk skates for them. Four Skate Co. (Perth) which I guess their most notable pro is Casey Foley. Then a bunch of pretty shit smaller companies like Folklore and a Time Skateboards reboot. Private Joy is a cool smaller Melbourne/Sydney based company. The only one of these that seems to be profitable really is Passport - their clothes are popular among non-skaters, they have broken out of Aus to be distributed internationally, and they have a great recognisable team. No one here is really making money from board sponsors though, a ton of people get stuff from Hardcore dist (Enjoi, Almost, Alltimers, Blind, etc.) but only boards. Like I imagine in the US there's more money in shoe sponsors, although converse here is pretty much non-existent, New Balance seems to only have a small travel budget, and Vans might pay a select few. Adidas and Nike have a bigger budget and do more - the Nike SB aus team is huge but it still doesnt seem like much money is allocated their way to do trips, and only the pros are payed I think. Volcom and RVCA also have small teams and do trips. So yeah, not much money in it here unless you make it on the proper US team of your shoe or clothing sponsor.
So Colllin have the same t-shirts, seven years by now, at least...

who

I believe it was a Berrics “Away Days” feature, but the narrator described Durrant as one of Koston’s favorite skaters. From that point on, I knew no one cared about him. Expect Koston, apparently.
