Man those shipping charges are wild. $20 for a single deck, really?

Not in defense of jamie but when is the last time you tried shipping anything?
Prices have gone way up, amazon and every other online retailer giving free shipping have skewed peoples views of how much it should cost.
Shipping a deck on the west coast to the same zone is around $11-13 if you have the smallest box possible.
I live in washington state and shipping a deck to Texas cost around $27 USPS AND $22 UPS.
I deal wish shipping sticker shock a lot, people trip out thinking I am over charging but for a larger item
33x10x4 4/5lbs it can get kind of expensive.
That being said, Jamie needs his head checked.

I see where you are coming from and in some cases I'm down to pay a premium for super fast shipping, but I'd like the option to have shit shipped out parcel post via USPS. Parcel post costs basically nothing even though it takes like 10-14 days to get across the country.

Sometimes, especially with eBay, untracked ground shipping isn't an option if you want to cover your ass as a seller in any meaningful way. Ground shipping can also have limits on insurance before they make you bump up to the next shipping option. eBay sides with the buyer pretty heavily when things go south so as a seller you do what you can to insulate.

Also, despite how big the States is, y'alls shipping is still obscenely cheap compared to most places. Colour me jealous.

You'd think that skateboard with John 3:16 on the bottom would just sort of sweep away everything negative and make things right between these two. I'm starting to doubt if the Bible is really real now.

EDIT: has it already been established somewhere that links, pics, quotes is NOT this Windler fellow? Because if it hasn't, then LPQ is Windler, right? Or am I not the Sherlock Holmes I thought I was?

Also, despite how big the States is, y'alls shipping is still obscenely cheap compared to most places. Colour me jealous.

Internet retail dude here to tell you it's not really that cheap, but consumer perception on shipping is skewed to hell and probably won't ever be realistic again thanks to Amazon etc. who fucked it up for the rest of us.

After 20 years in biz and shipping out anywhere from 25k-40k parcels a year for 3/4 of that, you learn that UPS, FedEx and USPS are all raging assholes when it comes to doing you favors.  Seriously, even when we'd have growth spurts, they'd be like "Well, let's bump your discounted pricing from 20% off to 20.8%, won't that be great?" right before they'd put another 2% increase into things a few months later.

Had to go to a shipping consolidator who was able to get us closer to 45% off the regular rates and about 60% off express services, and know what?  It STILL costs me an average of $13 to send an 8 lb. box to most spots in the US by Ground and since my margins suck ass, I can't reduce my shipping any and stay viable.

Amazon and those who are supreme salespeople on how "big they'll be in the future" who can woo the shipping companies have managed to get closer to 80% or so off the regular rates.  So, this means that the box I have to ship for about $13 rather than around $20 before discount, well, they're only paying about $4.50 for that same shipment.  Which is why they can give "free" shipping since they pay so little for it, and because they're forcing suppliers to give them added discounts on product in order to get preferential placement many times.  The main shippers add $3.50 more if you want shit delivered to your home rather than a business address, and if you live a few miles outside a major city?  Well, get ready for another $2-4 in "rural delivery surcharge" shit that might make that $13 shipment jump over $15 in a heartbeat.  If you ever want do to favors for the companies you like, have your shit shipped to your work whenever you can, because I can tell you, you'll save a few bucks in doing so.

More often, smaller companies doing cheap/low cost shipping can just do it because they work on bigger margins and subsidize their ship costs by covering part of it.  Easy to do when you have a $10 item that you mark up to $30, hard to do when my $10 item only sells for $14-15 and you've got a staff who needs to get paid.

Shipping shit fucking sucks for most of us because we deal with people writing to bitch about why we're not doing what the world's largest internet retailer does, and when you try to explain it to them, they just think you're full of shit and take their biz elsewhere.  Precisely why I'm planning a 2020 exit, until the day comes that shoppers have a grip on the reality of what the cost of doing business is and stop freaking out about having to pay actual cost for a service to get their fucking goods on their doorstep in a day or two for the ultimate in convenience, I don't want to deal with it.

/rant, sorry to bitch, but shipping cost stuff and the perception of costs just get under my skin.

Rant appreciated, always good to have that kind of info. My girl and I have been doing online business for the last 5 years or so, so inside info from someone who did it for as long as yourself is welcome. I didn't mean to over-generalize, as I'm mostly speaking from a smaller person-to-person side of online retail. I'm in Canada, shipping an 8lb box would be around $20+ depending on which coast (and indeed people still piss and moan that they're getting bilked extra by the seller).

No worries, sir.  I just always like to clear the air about shipping stuff because if I can help someone else know more about how the game works, it can save some stress and headaches since so many people mistakenly assume that everyone pays the same rates to send stuff.

I have friends with businesses that are in Canada who ship, and they said it's even worse there for everything cost-wise, I compared rates with someone once and even though we had similar discount levels, his costs were probably 25% more on average, which sucks.

Best of luck with trying to keep costs in place and from getting out of hand, it's literally the one thing pushing me out of doing what I used to love, but that's the way it goes now.  I'm sort of hoping that Amazon DOES actually build their own shipping and logistics company as they have said they're planning which means that UPS, FedEx and the postal service will all be over a barrel trying to actually cater to the little guy for once again and not just blowing Bezos at every chance once he's doing his own thing.

I had to prep an RFQ for the company I worked for.  I pulled five years of shipping invoices and made spreadsheets that showed how much we ship to each state/country and how much we paid for it.  UPS and fedex came back with similar offers.  We ended up going with Fedex.  It was nice for me because I had less invoices to process since our UPS account went to almost nothing.

Little known fact, UPS and FedEx basically just mirror each other's base rates, whatever you get beyond that is pretty much just based on who your rep is and how much faith they have in seeing you grow if they do you some extra discounting.

This is why sites can't technically show real time rates for FedEx and UPS at the same time, since both companies kind of collude on where pricing is set, so that to be within their terms you have to at least switch between the two for real time rates to be seen.  However, you can show 1 in real time and one as a flat rate simultaneously.  Nobody cares about that, but I felt like sharing it anyway.

As for which shipper is superior, it's such a tough call. FedEx has WAY better logistics for me shipping to the East Coast and most of my customers get stuff in 2 days rather than 3 days from the Midwest where I'm located, which is great when I send out perishable shit that can't go more than 2 days so people don't have to pony up the scratch for 2 Day Air's higher costs.  However, FedEx's drives are notorious for having WAY more delivery issues in my 20+ years of shipping shit as compared to UPS.  Literally, even with being tracked at every step of their day, I'll have FedEx insisting that they delivered to the right place when my customer is saying they were home all day but nobody arrived.  Even when it ends up that someone down the block brings them their shit, FedEx will still try to deny culpability in the error, where UPS tends to not try to fuck with me nearly as much and usually accepts more responsibility.

It's a trade-off, you'll get some shit with one that you won't get with the other, but it always seems to come at a price elsewhere in service.

Check out FedEx SmartPost. I just shipped Cali to Kentucky for about $15.
SmartPost (and UPS' SurePost equivalent) are kind of a mixed bag once you know how they work.

Basically, the ONLY difference between their services and standard Ground for home delivery are that you pay about $3.50 less by their removal of the home delivery surcharge for a residence because, once the box reaches the destination city, FedEx or UPS kicks it over to the local post office for final delivery and gives them a small cut of the ship costs in exchange.  Which means something if you're really trying to keep costs down, but rather than maybe 1-4 days, you can sometimes be looking at 7-10+ days just for that bit of savings.  Since your postal carrier comes by every day anyway, it's why the do this, so they can just cut their own drivers out of the loop and rely on the USPS supply chain to complete it.  Fine if nothing is urgent, but sometimes it's slower than molasses and good fucking luck filing a claim if it gets lost or damaged because FedEx or UPS will just blame it on the USPS since they tendered it last for delivery.  The savings comes at other costs, that's for sure.

- Said moron turned out to be a litigator
- General pissing match and gaslighting between two grown men ensues
