Vans is the only major company that doesn't rely on a 3rd party to sponsor Canadians as far as I'm aware.
That’s kind of fucked. More stuff is happening in Europe and that’s several thousands of miles further away from the major industry centers. Good to see that the Canadians created their own cool thing in response though.
I think you have to look at the bigger picture:
1) the population per capita is much larger in Europe than in Canada, and in Canada the population is very spread out. Europe lot more people and other countries are very close, affordable and accessible to travel too. So when it comes to where to focus marketing budgets its a no brainer to go to Europe Vs. Canada.
2) The money just isnt there in Canada. Skateboarding as whole is down. Skateshops are closing, even the "mall" shops are struggling. Its hard to spend money when money isnt coming in.
3) Canada still does have lots of contests. Montreal seams to be the mecca right now. Vans park series recently, Dime Glory. Skateboarding is alive in Canada.
4) I do miss demos. It seems like demos are few and far between now. Social media is far cheepier and more effective way to promote your company but it does take away from the "magic" of seeing your hero skate your hometown spots.
