90's deck lengths (Girl specifically)
« on: November 19, 2019, 09:12:20 AM »
I'm just wondering if anybody can remember what the average deck length of a 7.5 was back in 94. I just got a couple of the bruised heel Mike Carroll decks for fun and was surprised at how short they are at 31".

https://www.warehouseskateboards.com/girl-skateboards-mike-carroll-bruised-heel-skateboard-deck-7.5x31

I consider anything under 31.5" to be a kids deck. I was hoping it would be more ride-able as I had some plans for it.
Does anyone have any vintage wall hangers they can measure or verify in any way the actual length of 7.5" boards from the early/mid 90's?

The shape and concave are on point. It's super flat and I remember having Girl decks that looked exactly like it but that was long before I ever payed attention to board specs. Nowadays you can't find anything under 8" that is over 31.25" and I am wondering if that is why these decks are so short. They seem to keep scaling decks down in length too as they get narrower, which wasn't how it used to be. I used to ride 7.5 and 7.6 all the time and the only time I remember having decks that were too short were a couple Kalis AWS decks in the late 90's.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. One more question. Is there anyone out there who would be stoked to skate a proper "man-sized" 7.75" board again? Maybe 31.75 long with a nice 14.25 WB and some good concave and  steep kicks? Let me know and Thank you!

This is CCS summer 1997. Girl was running a few 31.12" at that time, so a 31" in 1994 doesn't surprise me at all.

I had a couple Sheffy boards a little later ('96 & '97) and they were both 7.5" x 31.5". I remember Girl always having at least a couple boards in that size.

Awesome! Thank you so much. It definitely looks to be shorter than in 97 but not by much. I'm trying to set up a period correct complete and I just wanted to make sure it's not weirdly off. It's going to take some getting used to. 31.75-32 is my ideal range. Rocket flips here I come!

Thanks you guys. I actually had the blue girl logo Carroll deck in that catalogue. I loved that deck. I had no idea it was a 7.88 but that makes sense as I rode it with indys which only came in 136 at the time.

That glifberg bat deck was the first board I ever got. I ordered the Eddie Munster deck that was out before it and that痴 what they sent instead. Skating is sick

Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane.

That was the very first skateboard catalog I ever saw. Our 8th grade teacher threw it in the trash because someone was looking at it in class. I pulled it out later. I was a fat dork who had never been interested in skating, but once I saw that I was just obsessed. I borrowed a variflex from my neighbor and learned to push in my parents basement over the winter.

Pointless story but I was stoked to find that scan and to have an excuse to post it.

I use to skate the 7.38 shape it seems.

Was always on sheffeys, Marianos and kostons and t.fergurson boards
those things seemed very disposable . I was setting one up fortnightly I reckon

Interesting

As for why they would be so short, my theory has always been that the ratio between width and length from back in the day sort of stayed with us until today.
Basically, 31" used to be a normal length for street decks. If they were wider decks, they would also make them longer, as these were mostly used by transition dudes or whatever.
As skaters started using progressively wider boards, manufacturer's would produce them using the already established ratio for wider decks. As time went on, people just got used to decks being longer.
So when people talk about decks getting wider, they actually just got bigger all around. It's really only recently that we see more variety in shapes and dimensions.

I wasn't around in '94, but I have been observing this since the early 2000s, as I've always preferred a shorter board, regardless of width. Back when I used to skate 7.6", the length was usually hovering around 31", but as the standard width started creeping above 8", finding decks under 32" in length started to become a challenge. I actually skated Girl and Chocolate decks exclusively for a few years from about 2007, as I could always find an 8"-8.1" deck with a <31.5" length. Then they changed, and I was on Death skateboards and Dan Drehobl's Krooked decks for a while. Now I finally feel like there's more variety, so I try everything now.

Even when I started skating in 99-2000 I feel like deck lengths were 31.3-31.5 .
Just setup a board with a 31.3 length and I知 fucking loving it

Haha yeah the one I have is also super pointy. I use it as a rainboard and surprisngly it still has pop. Too light for my liking, however.

Not quite 90's but I found my first board in the garage (a Zero from like '01)

W: 7.75
L: 30.75
wb: 14

I skated this thing for years. Wondering if that's why I feel super uncomfortable on longer decks.

Looking back at these are really fun.
I started skating a smaller board, when I look down, for a moment....

What board is it? I was skating that 31.13" Ty Beall deck for a few weeks before the weather pushed me back to a bigger setup and absolutely loved it. Short boards seem to be where I feel most comfortable, I think 8.25/8.38 31.5  14.25wb is my goldilocks zone.

same for me, but 8.38 > 8.25
