Eventually you get to a point in life and loss where how people died doesn't really matter as much as the fact they are gone.

Whether he died of a heart attack, stroke, OD, or some other natural or unnatural circumstance, what does it really change, he isn't coming back. Nothing can change the fact that the dude is dead.

Exactly this. Big cities see hundreds or thousands of deaths every day, so there’s basically no chance that one of probably a dozen daily potential opioid/opiate overdoses from some random old guy in San Francisco is going to be of any interest to the authorities or the medical examiner.

Burnett did that "skateboarders and addiction" article a while after Phelps died. Not sure if the two are connected, but it was a welcome break from all the years of glorifying the Hellride, skating and drinking lifestyle (and never even touching the subject while so many skaters are struggling with addiction.)

My guess is they didn't want to write about his cause of death - and indeed what does it matter know that he's gone - but the editors/owners agreed to warn skaters instead with articles like this.
