Bunt rules. Podcasts are tough especially when it appeals to only one target audience. These guys have been doing the thing for nine years and each time I still look forward to listening even if its a skater I'm not that interested in. Some episodes are gona be better than others but if they were all barn burners, none of them would be as memorable.
[close]

That's what's up. There's a finite amount of people you can possibly interview in the scene, some of them just won't be as interesting, that can't be helped. Also remember these are salt of the Earth dudes who work full time jobs, Dono is a father, they do this in their spare time, basically. Anybody would be a little lower energy from time to time with that schedule.

I'm surprised to see so many Pals siding with GH, that dude really has a stranglehold on the jaded skater demographic.
I don't hate GH or anything, but his smarmy "I am very smart" schtick started wearing thin for me a long time ago and I can only watch him in small doses. I'd 100% take Bunt over GH if I could only listen to one of them.

Hard agree with everything you both said.

Maybe they should just record a few extra episodes every season so they can leave the weak ones behind? And let the guests know they have to fire some shots in the rapid fire. The Tosh Townend one was amazing because he's not involved in the industry at all so he held nothing back, that's what we need more of

From what I've heard multiple podcasters say the hardest part about the whole thing is scheduling guests. Since the skate industry is pretty small and insular, I'm sure it's even tougher to book interesting guests for every episode than for some general interest podcast. Now keep in mind that both Dono and Cephas work full time jobs, which doesn't exactly make scheduling a 90min. plus zoom call any easier. Long story short, it's pretty likely not feasible to "just record a couple extra interviews". Same with the demand for spicier rapid fire answers: Interviewers can't force their subjects to throw shade if they don't want to, and even if they managed to pressure someone to do it, no one else is going to want to go on a show with such pushy hosts. I fully agree that people without any ties to the industry are usually the better guests, not only because they have no reason to hold back, but also because they tend to have a different perspective on skating after they've left it. I find that much more interesting than someone in their early 20s calling themselves the old guard.

I think they found a format that works, so they stick with it.I think going to youtube hurts the vibe of the show a bit. Mostly because you’re watching people talk through screens. As opposed two three people in a room having a more fluid conversation.  I thought the Blake episode was a little lame, cause he seems a little subdued.   The down size of having a format is guests like him are going to plan and write down answers,  which hurts the authenticity of responses. Also it would be lame of them to spend hours interviewing someone then shelve it, due to it being a little boring. Interviews with people who have left the industry seem more interesting, but hardly no one seems to leave the industry.

They handled that GH thing really well. GH is definitely trying to have it both ways : be homies with the bunt guys in the DMs, and then say their content is slipping on his private streams. He deserves to get addressed on video; its not like Joa wouldn't do the same... How many hit piece videos has he personally done on people in the industry? And they didn't even flame Joa that hard, really professional.

Personally, GH lost me with his Tom Knox campaign. There comes a point where your vitriol can go way beyond criticism or simply sharing your opinion. I would say his audience is surely kids younger than 20, who still have that high school "lord of the flies" kill-or-be-killed gossip mentality or extremely jaded older dudes. ain't nobody that has a job and a girlfriend and pays their rent is sitting up hanging out in the chat with Joa being negative and feeding him gossip.

And the snark is unbearable at this point. It's shocking that he hasn't grown out of it yet. I'm sure the Patreon money (and consequent lack of a real job) and his token flow spots on cool teams in skating is only padding his ego.

They really weren’t crying about it, they just seemed bummed that gh acted like a friend but was talking shit about them supposedly only doing the show so vans will pay for the bunt jam
[close]

Yeah idk what everyone is on about they just addressed it because that dude literally sifted through hours of GH livestreams and made a 5 minute compilation, which is fucking crazy behavior. But regardless they didn’t pop off or get all in their feelings, they reacted appropriately and genuinely imo.

I was subbed to GH’s patreon a while back and on slow nights I’d watch some of his livestream content and that dude can be ruthless with the shit talk in that setting. It got to the point where I was just getting exhausted by how snarky and petty he can be when he’s not going off of a script. Still a fan of both in moderation but bunt dudes handled it like gentlemen.

Yeah this is really true. I generally like his takes and nothing he said about the Bunt guys seems that off-base tbh but I think he has this conception that he can say anything in his livestreams and that it won't really leave that setting, which obviously isn't true. He's mentioned that's why he mostly does that style of content now and doesn't really publicly release as many videos on his main Youtube channel as he used to, because he feels like the potential backlash isn't worth it and he'd rather just collect his Patreon money and do his thing without consequences. He's also said that he wants to be "unbiased" so he won't shy away from criticizing people that he's friends with, which is good in theory... But I think that he gets caught up in the moment and crosses the line from criticism into stuff that he probably wouldn't want those people to hear him say, especially in the tone he uses when he's fired up. He's trying to play up "the character" of GH to make it entertaining so I get why he does it, but if he wants to maintain real relationships with people in the industry, I think he needs to be more intentional about how he talks about those people. Even though what he's saying about the Bunt guys doesn't seem off-base to me, if I was them I would still feel like he was being a bit two-faced with the way he's saying it. Gotta stand on business if you're gonna talk like that, or just keep it to yourself.

On an unrelated note, I already had low expectations for Blake Carpenter's personality from the flat earth stuff but hearing him say that he wants to be a school cop as his dream job after skating in the Rapid Fire was so cringe. the overlap of professional skateboarding with people who love the American institution of policing is so perplexing to me

I've watched GH here and there and I feel he's definitely sunk into the character or whatever it is, it used to kinda be the real shit a lot of people thought and maybe were afraid to say, but I watched New Balance video and a lot of his production comments were on point but it seemed like he was just really trying to go after every little thing all the dudes on the team were doing, all dudes that all much better than him. It seems kinda forced now where before he was just being a silly dickhead

I love the Bunt, but 100% agree here that going to YouTube hurt the vibe of the show. I still only listen while working — but you can feel a bit of the on-screen tension and apprehension while listening now. I get why they did the YouTube thing, but I think both the hosts and guests seemed more relaxed and candid when it was audio only. I feel like they should keep the YouTube for the Random Skater segment but go back to audio-only, although I realize that's a tough move now that they made the switch and probably won't happen (also advertisers probably want them on YouTube).

Who said he’s not down? I could see him just not having much more to say about himself after his bunt episode. The only media I could see him doing only shoe related media this year.

in the most recent post office the boys confirmed theyve asked reynolds multiple times to be on and he turned them down

also the last time andrew reynolds came on the 9 club stop and chat, he said something like "i made up my mind i'm not doing interviews anymore but jeron asked me personally so i said ok"

I forgot when/where but he did say he had a bad ankle and it never felt better before the jam.

Im not a fan of the youtube addition but all in all last season has more highs than lows. Wheatley interview was so good, and seeing Shane shoot the shit was a sick surprise.

Bunt if you’re reading this love you all BUT we needed that one wildcard Canadian interview every season!!! I still go back to hugo, will, and mitch for the laughs
