Tips on ollie north
« on: January 08, 2020, 07:15:59 AM »
Never tried them before until yesterday. Got one or two down but feels awkward to land on my back foot and sometimes I hit my front heel with the board when I land it’s so annoying. Any tips or recommendations?

Well first you’re going to need a good compass.

This.
Just think of it like a heel flip but kick straight so it doesn't flip (and keep your back foot on, of course).

Ollie first, then kick that foot out when you're nearing the apex of your ollie; that's how I do em at least.

Pretty much this, they’re a lil weird at first but once you get used to them they’re not too difficult. Believe it or not, it’s easier to do 1-foot back 180’s down shit than a straight ollie north because the “scoop” of the 180 kinda helps facilitate that kick out motion while keeping the board with you . It’s just scary hanging on the board with just the tip of the toes on your back foot in mid-air

Yep it’s like a slight delay on the flick. Kick out through the point of the nose not to either side. If you time it right even if your nose dips a little, you should be able to get both feet back on before landing. Also putting your front foot back on the board kind feels like you have to give it a lift.

I learnt them by putting my front foot further forward than on a normal ollie. To get height I only kick my foot out when the ollie peaks.

his are basicly straight no-complys without touching the ground...

I do them like a no flip heel flip. Other people might do them like a no grab benihanna. Many different ways to do them I guess.

One foot and Ollie north are considered two different tricks by some people

After the ollie and apex, I've always let the board level out a little lower (instead of sucking up my back foot for height) then I just push the foot out.

Also, Allen's one foots are fucking gross.

Yeah, please don't do them like this. It's like getting a kickflip trick tip from the Gonz.

They were called lumber jacks or ollie norths.  The mag caption writers put theyre foot down an they instituted the term "one foots".  Part of a trend of taking cool named tricks out of skateboarding in the transfer from the 80s to the 90s .

We used to call the Ron Allen versions 'Ollie Norths' and the now standard version 'one foot ollies' or 'ollie one foots.'. The difference is, Ron uses his back foot to get the board straight again whereas with one-foots, you have to use the front foot to kick the board into position before lofting your foot into orbit. The best one foots always have the slightly boned-look to the ollie (front pointing down)... Ron's version was really fun to do though. I might try and relearn them. There is also a version where you use your back hand to push the board back into position... aka the Ollie Scare-Walk ... ha ha.. H street days...

Once you learn the standard ollie one foot, please consider grabbing your tail...

Don't bother with Pierre Andre's back foot-one foot, that one is silly.

Ron Allen did those with his knee.  And a scarewalk you kick both feet to the side opsite from an airwalk so its not like a one foot.

I learned the Scare walk about the same time as I learned Ron's Ollie North's. Your back hand plays the same role as as Ron's knee/leg/foot. Those two hot maneuvers share a lot in common.

The trick is to get your back leg up as high as possible and kick down at a 45 degree angle.
Just watch out. Once you get them dialed, you'll have to unlearn them, because you'll start doing them uncontrollably.

mine aren't that great but i ollie and level it out then sort of nudge down with the front foot. i learned them off photos where the nose is boned and the foot is straight out, sometimes nosebonked off hydrants. technically i feel it's a little wrong but like Ron Allen's, there's no wrong way to eat a Reese's.

Gnarred for in-depth knowledge about those two tricks. This kid in my hometown learned scarewalks by accident trying to imitate my airwalks and is now stupid good at both that trick, and the Ron Allen one-foot which are basically his go-to's down stuff. Had to relearn both because he's one of those game of SKATE fiends and would keep wrecking me with those.
