"Skate Industry" for women: grind for years for no recognition, no money, ever

"Skate Industry" for men: get hooked up as an adolescent, get free product whole life, filmers trip over themselves to cover you, act like an idiot and get praised, drive drunk, injure your friends, openly talk about not skating for years, put out no coverage for years, only stop getting paid and getting free shit shit when you voluntarily just decide you're too cool anymore

Mike Mo thinking it's time for everything to come to a close many years after everything had come to a close.
Could you imagine skating at his level and having that all taken away from you overnight. He never chilled or disappeared for a few years, always was consistently putting out footage and expanding what’s possible on a board until the accident. I’m sure he was holding onto whatever hope there was of getting back to skating at that level again. He always seemed like a stand up guy and is continuing to show it even after the crash. Seems to have a really positive outlook on it, saying he’s glad he hurt himself and not someone else. So put some respect on his name. Love you Mo!

In my opinion the fact Girl still has boards for people like Mike Mo shows how little they're willing to put 100% faith into their new riders.

So what if his board still sells now, I doubt it will in another 5 years. If they actually put 100% into their new team, making names for them and moving forward it might just help them stick around a lot longer. Mo still having a board is insulting to any of their current pros/ams.

Or they could be thinking that if they are willing to stick by this guy through all of this, then if anything should happen with me, they wouldn't drop me at the first convenient opportunity.

While they've messed up on not putting guys on, they have always been incredibly loyal to the ones they do put on, arguably to a detriment to their business.

Possibly a detriment. But with deck company's coming and going weekly over the past 5 years, there's some job security for Crailtap riders.

Being a successful pro-skater (one who can pay their bills and even buy a house) is a pipe dream for most. Girl and Chocolate skaters for the most part seem financially secure and happy for choosing the Crail Camp. But you don't get a secure spot until you turn pro

I guess it could look like that, but if I was Griffin Gass I don't think I'd believe for one second that they'd do that for me. (nothing against griffin he's ill af). I just think so much of Crails branding and image was riding on Mike Mo's 'comedy'/tech/image towards the first half of the last decade, he was their prodigy - bringing in this 'new family friendly' Girl image along with Malto. Now they don't really do that with anyone, except for maybe manchild.

Holding onto any of that image now in this current climate is just ludicrous. After Polar, Palace, FA etc. pulled the rug out from underneath them. Then Girl had the perfect chance (sounds terrible given the circumstances, I know) to rebuild their team. But instead they chose this route. Now we're here, with a team that makes literally no sense what so ever.

You couldn't give Crailtap more chances to make good decisions if you tried. - Even their team rider, who literally said he's 100% with skating and doesn't really fit in with the new riders/direction, is pretty much giving them a chance and they still make the wrong decision.

What an enlightened take on Mike Mo retiring. When you see someone your age thats better than most pros it was pretty inspiring to see.

Women should totally be in skating and getting paid, but you're omitting the last 50 years and the fact that a man invented the toy itself as well as the act of skateboarding and likely 95% of skateboarding companies are begun and owned by men. Men probably account for 75% of board sales or more. Show me a clip from your favorite female skater that includes a single trick from a mike mo part.

They never kept that next wave of guys who looked to carry the brand after the OG team phased out. Biebel stayed, Jereme went crazy, and also left, and the previous prodigy was P-Rod who left for Plan B. They also had a lot invested in CK1. CK1 had his incident, Malto suffered a big injury and Mike Mo had this. All while the OG team aged out, and they had no one between the next wave of the younger guys I mentioned plus AO (who was never a footage machine and left) and the OGs outside of Biebel.

Being on Girl/Chocolate used to mean premium shoe money and good board royalties. Not sure that's the case anymore.

loved Fully Flared and the era where he had all of those videos with Vince on 8=D
but if we're going to be honest, dude wasn't thaaaat productive after he got his board and before the injury.
started Glassy, selling gamer goggles, and making memes with his puppet.

shame he had to get seriously injured being reckless but equally a shame he was never able to follow up something comparable to his Fully Flared section

It's a real shame. Dude is so good.

I appreciate Girl sticking by their riders. I don't see how giving him one board per drop is any different than what a lot of companies do for "legacy" riders

I think he would still be ready to retire from skating today if he hadn’t had the golf cart accident.

It would be awesome for someone to do a Mike mo re-edit type thing. He had good stuff that wasn’t in videos.

Lol I’ve never seen this one
Hey rick hey mike this is the trick I did before I blew it on a golf cart, destroyed my leg and almost killed my friends

i think putting alex olson on really split the brands personality in a direction most of the riders werent about. if they had passed on him and focused on jacking tyler bledsoe and (ugh) mikey taylor and a few other people. they would have had a really solid crew of people that are actually friends instead of dudes who are forced to be around each other for brand image throwing milkshakes at each other. the last few years probably would have been less painful for crail, imo.

Is it because pretty sweet isn’t on YouTube that none of you all saw it? His part in that video goes. Not a single filler trick in it.
