I don't understand why these companies can't have an actual, upfront person come post in Shoes and Gear for them like NB has former Foundation pro and nice guy Jason Rothmeyer do?

What about Slap does he get that Cariuma's guys don't? What does the anonymous Emerica guy who posts here get that Cariuma's guys don't?

Deliberately starting an argument with a disingenuous account in the wrong section of the board is not good marketing

I will never understand your lack of cariuma hate
I think it’s a pretty simple equation: if you actually skate (and don’t get them for free), then you will automatically hate them!

I already loathed the design/ logo when it first came out but then they tried to get all OG I-path (a company I love btw) and tell us how sustainable and environmentally friendly their shoes were... ugh

Impish sausage is definitely gonna blow up as a euphemism this year

It’s interesting when a company explicitly states they’re trying to do something good, they are the ones taken to task over their claim whereas Nike’s CEO doesn’t pay tax and hasn’t set a goal around climate action.

Skateboarding is so USA centric. There is definitely racism around Brazilian skaters and this extends to companies also. The Olympics have shown that the USA is falling behind in a big way as more interesting and progressive scenes and companies emerge beyond the boring Californian bro culture that all you nerds wank over and mythologize.
well, we sort of invented it and those cali bros made it cool enough that everyone from everywhere wanted a piece. Of course there have been huge influences from outside of Cali and the US but it has also has diluted it down to another marketing avenue for corps to push products so I can hear some olympic talking head say "he jumped onto the rail with the middle of his board".

Skateboarding being in the olympics is the most American thing ever. Look at the copenhagen comp, that shit would never fly in the USA.

Its not just skateboarding. Ever since Trump got into power, racism reared its head,  the dumb midwest cliches were kinda proved true. USA ain't that cool anymore. In the past it was, now people are realizing there own cultures are relevant and interesting in the modern world. Skateboarding is currently going through a renaissance in terms of geopolitical power (Deluxe is in decline) and the culture of thing - female skaters are a serious thing and guys like Jason Jessee and Danny Way who kinda typified Cali skating are seen as fucking wack.

Yelling down a new thing rarely works. I'm not saying buy a pair of Cariumas, but all this sneering from the cool brigade on here is pretty wack and feels dated.

The point is some consumers do, so if you buy shoes that are actively trying to take a lesser toll on the environment, it heightens demand. You saying shit like environmentalism is fucking annoying makes you like some pathetic fucking leach that doesn't understand postive action. Because Slap is a tiny drop in the pond and not as important to the culture of skateboarding as posters like to think it is. These boards aren’t the last bastion of the old guard, we’re fanatic weirdos arguing to ourselves while the rest of the world is filming content.

I said it here and I'll say it again https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=113480.30

BTW, they never did update their About Us page...

If Braille Skateboarding ever does a review of these shoes, it's game over. With the Berrics connection already established, I wouldn't be surprised if Cariuma was dabbling in Scientology.

And for a company that prides itself on "Transparency" - https://cariuma.com/pages/about-us - it sure is difficult to find out where Cariuma shoes are manufactured. Go ahead and search through their website - you won't find any information, aside from the mailing address at the very bottom of their FAQ page - https://cariuma.com/pages/help. Funny - you'd think their address would be in Rio, Brazil based on the permanent banner on every web page reading "Rio, Brazil." And there's a couple of pictures of some very happy looking Asian people in the Factories section of their About Us page - https://cariuma.com/pages/about-us-sustainability - so maybe we're just supposed to assume?

You actually have to open up a chat to find out where the shoes are manufactured. So transparent! Let's see if they follow through with updating their About Us page.

Yet the Founder and CEO, David Python, is more than happy to shill for something called China Start - https://www.china-start.org/.

Carbon Offset Consumerism picked up steam in the early 2000s with people injecting saline in their lips. Then with the poorly made sock shoes you buy at Whole Foods. I guess Cariuma is a combo of both.

While I agree with a lot you are saying I'm curious about the DLX decline? Not sure where you are from but I think you would have tough time finding a skate shop in the states that does not carry any DLX products.
What year did 1010 and dway typify Cali skating?
I think the main reason for the hate is its another non-skate company trying to buy its way in. Plus, they're expensive & look like shit.

While I agree with most of what you're saying, the Olympics say nothing about legitimate skate scenes. There are a great many interesting and progressive scenes, but the Olympic results are not indicative of any of them.  Also, I don't mythologize much, but I definitely mythologize Guy skating an LA schoolyard 25 years ago.
[close]

Yeah you're right about the Olympics. I guess what I meant that when American skaters aren't winning the gold medals in either womens or mens street events, it shows that skating has transgressed the borders of the USA and has become an international thing. For years it was Hawk, Lutzka, Sheckler, Nyjah. Yuto represents a shift. Cariuma, besides like Globe, is one of the first international skate shoe companies that further showcases this dissolution of American centric skating. Having said that, I probably won't buy a pair but they're not as ugly as ya'll making out.

Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? Yeah, a lot of the industry is based in California but skating has been a lot more global for a long time now. How are you going to say that it’s US (specifically California) centric when three of the most popular brands out there right now (Quasi, Polar, and Palace) are based out of Ohio, Sweden/Portugal, and England? And non-American and non-California based skaters routinely talk about how cool it is that they can have a full career without having to move to California?

Just budget the amount for one pair of those things, then buy a pair of $30 Pumas at the local mom and pop shoe store. You’ll have enough left over for a deck.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but Cariuma is ultimately just fucking corny and that's why they suck. The way they market themselves, the fact that every shitty IG kid that floods my discover feed is suddenly wearing them, the ties to Berra. It's odd how many people pretending that "being cool" isn't part of skateboarding. Cariuma is not cool, simple as that. I guess maybe kids don't give a shit about that stuff anymore, and maybe that's a good thing and like I said I'm just some stupid old asshole now. No one is hating on them for being "environmentally conscious", that's all well and good. They're just ugly and are synonymous with the dorkiest parts of skating.

They are a business and they are just as profit driven as anybody else. These dudes are out here fucking paying skaters, allowing them to skate and put out footy and you actually have a gripe with that?  Yeah they sponsor influencers or whatever, but that is a necessary evil in the current climate of marketing.

I saw some kid on reddit say that skate videos are dead tik tok and insta are it, and the views speak for themselves. I don't watch 15s vids of skating cause I'm a full parts and rough cuts kinda guy, but the views are pretty nuts. Saw this kid bag a mil on a tre he didnt even land (but came close as fuck) as evidence of tik tok being it rn.

Point being if you actually hate cariuma for getting involved in skating and bringing attention to more guys who have potential (not saying they're all good) you are, in my eyes, a selfish fuck who's holding on too hard to he past.

Light me up fuckers.

I came back to this thread just to try and kook you again. But I can’t kook twice in 24hrs. So just know. Your opinion is wrong.
