Skate Fiilmer/Film Director comparisons
« on: April 22, 2021, 06:03:38 PM »
I just had a random thought pop into my head; what are some skate fiilmer/Film Director comparisons? For example :

Stacy Peralta = Steven Spielberg (the most well known and popular of their respective craft)
Spike Jonze = Wes Anderson (quirky style)
Chris Gregson = Sam Raimi (known for their aggressive and dynamic filming)
Ty Evans = Paul Greengrass (annoys the shit out of people with their gimmick filming)

Mmm wouldn’t spike jonze just be spike jonze?

Ty Evans is more of a latter day Zemekis type.  Slave to new technology regardless if needed or wanted.   I don’t think the guy who introduced steadicams to skating should be compared to the King of the Shaky Cam

If Ty Evans isn't Michael Bay then I don't know what life is anymore.

Also, Chris Theissen = Greengrass

How/why does Paul Greengrass of all directors loom so large in this thread?

How/why does Paul Greengrass of all directors loom so large in this thread?

Because we all suffered through the fight scenes in the Bourne movies and know it's his fault

I take this back.  He’s George Lucas.  They both influenced our childhoods (hot streak of Transworld videos) and destroyed our childhoods.   Technology-obsessed too

benny maglinao - robert eggers & denis vileneuve
jacob harris - david lynch
chris ray - any garbage director

my knee jerk impulse was to shit on this (i wrote my college thesis on lynch...) but then i remembered in dreams in vase. and THEN i remembered he actually sampled the quasi-diegetic 'soundtrack' from eraserhead in brief pieces up and down that video, so yeah. good call, and definitely the most literal.

The references to Lynch’s films are incredibly prevalent in Jake’s videos. There’s a lot of subtle ones like the shot of the waving man from the London bus in the St. Paul episode just like the waving fireman from blue velvet. It’s clear he takes inspiration from more than just Lynch but the comparison to his work is pretty spot on.

Referencing Lynch doesn’t make him the filmer version of Lynch, it makes him Brian DePalma who used to do something similar but with Hitchcock

Beagle - John Waters (fixation and embrace of the oddities of the human race)

Mandible Claw/Colin Read - Michel Gondry (just basing off of Spirit Quest and their in-camera trickery)

Ternasky - Francis Ford Coppola (made some genuine masterpieces but flamed out too early in their career for pushing things too much)

I’m feeling like a Jon Miner is a Soderbergh and a Greg Hunt is like a Mike Nichols type.  They’re born skaters’ filmers/actors’ directors  but it doesn’t feel fully sussed out

French Fred - Roman Polanski (euros who came over and revolutionized shit but returned back to Europe - for very different reasons)

Ty Evans - James Cameron
Greg Hunt - Martin Scorsese
Josh Stewart - Spike Lee
William Strobeck - Andy Warhol (obvious influence)
Jacob Harris - Jean Cocteau
Jim Greco - John Cassavettes
John Wilson - Safdie Brothers

Was gonna say Scorsese for him because of the freneticism coupled with his ability to tell a story, with a bit of Woody with his quirky neurosis, but I like the FFC comparison you made.

No Coen bros. anywhere?

Atlantic Drift and Yorgos Lanthimos

Jacob Harris has been pretty vocal about the David Lynch influence in his stuff, but Lanthimos is also a good pull.
