Pitch a skate-related movie
« on: April 29, 2021, 08:01:46 AM »
There’s been a bunch of movie related stuff flying around slap lately, and there also seems to be a consensus that there are no good skateboarding movies. Time to step up ourselves! Pitch your skate movie idea here.

Here’s a few I’ve been toying with in my head:

“Heaven is a half pipe”. Existential comedy. A skater dies and goes to heaven. He finds that it’s an enormous half pipe. Stoked at the beginning, he gradually realises that it’s not as cool as he thought it was, and eventually comes to the conclusion that he is really in hell, as the guys who he will spend eternity with are Shaun White and Danny Way.

Sports drama set in the late 80s vert milieu. Mainly about a rivalry between two top vert pros for chicks, trophies and haircuts. As one of them is bent on throwing away his career for sex drugs and rock n roll, his rival first takes advantage to become the champ, but eventually decides to save his rival from his demons, which, as it turns out, he knows only too well himself.

Some drama highlighting alcoholism and how the pro skater lifestyle encourages it could be good drama material as well. Some guy drops out of high school and suddenly finds himself famous. Cut to ten years later and he’s washed and regretful, and us come to hate skateboarding. After some cataclysmic event, he quits his sponsors, moves back to his home town and tries to put the pieces of his old life together. In the prices he recovers his original love for skating, as well as the girl next door.

Theres also potential for some decent biopics with some pros. Something based on Stevie Williams’ story might work quite well, for example. Muska might as well, or Lil B.

This sounds a bit like "the good place"/"huis clos" which I like, also with the combination of your Wittgenstein picture.

A dynamic story of love, skateboarding, and heartbreak, directed by Wong Kar-wai. A stylistic portrait of a relationship against all odds.

"Like Mike (Vallely, Carrol, any pro named mike)"
A young broke skater desperately trying to get sponsored. Opening scene - he sends out sponsor me tapes, a few weeks later receiving rejection letters saying "you just don't have what it takes"
Upset, he goes to skate some local spot, making some comment to a friend that he hopes he doesn't break his board, as he has no money for a new one. His board then shoots out, getting run over by a car, snapping his board, cracking his trucks, breaking his bearings, and flatspotting his wheels, completely unsalvageable.
Making his way home in tears, a kind old lady sees him and asks whats wrong. He explains his troubles to the old lady, who says, "my son passed away a few years ago but he had a skateboard hanging on his wall that some pro (named mike) gave to him at a demo, you can have it if you like". Young skater says thank you, i would love that.
Board turns out to have special powers, giving him what it takes to get noticed by companies. He picks up a few sponsors, who tell him he's going on tour, they won't let him use his mike board since it's not one of the team's boards. He struggles with a team board and the other riders seem to not approve of him, so he goes and grabs his mike board, which he uses to win over the whole team. They allow him throw some team stickers onto it and just stick with that board.
Weeks later, towards the end of their tour, they have a big demo in a large city, of which the importance is mentioned throughout the film. The night before he snaps his mike board. uh oh. He's freaking out and calls the old lady (Whose phone number he somehow has). The old lady tells him not to worry, the board didn't actually make him better, he had it inside himself the whole time.
He proceeds to shine at the demo, during which he wins over the heart of a cute girl as well as the "cool guy" on the team who never gave him a chance.
The end.
Notes - the old lady will be played by lil bow wow

I liked machotaildrop a lot, doing a whimsical satire about the skateboard industry was surprisingly good and Mccrank was actually a solid actor.

I don’t think there’s a good way to make a compelling movie about skateboarding that’s realistic for skateboarders and accessible for regular people. You can do a realistic depiction where skateboarding isn’t the focus, like Kids. But no one wants to watch a movie where some dude and his friends film Instagram clips, watch videos and buy shoes.

It's like the Goonies but instead of a search for treasure, they're on the search for the perfect Oregon ditch spot. But meth heads have laid the trail with booby traps because, you know, they're paranoid meth heads. Even to the point where they're pursue them in hope of robbing them because, you know, they're meth heads who need to steal and hock shit in order to afford more meth. And when they finally get to the spot, they realize Chunk's dumbass forgot to bring the camera battery. So they just skate and relish in the memories of the adventure they had knowing no one will see footage of it.

It's called "Soul Skater" and it's a movie about kids who insisted on doing stationary bonelesses and caspers with their front foot completely on the ground. Then they turn 15 and start drinking Fireball and fingering girls and never pick up their skateboard ever again. It ends by fast forwarding 13 years and it shows those kids as adults with a decent house in their hometown and a couple kids of their own, and then it cuts to me and I'm still getting pissed at 360 flips and also I'm played by Jonah Hill.

Cosmic horror about the unseen entity that chases nick Boserio when he skates.

True crime documentary where Jason Jesse actually goes to jail.

A remake of waiting for godot/rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead but the conversation takes place between a filmer and a photographer while a dude is battling for an unimpressive manny.

Well I have like 9 Andy Anderson dated flight decks.

Slap shot or Goon but with skateboarding. Like a guy in his late twenties still on flow.

I'll articulate said ideas later. Might add a more serious pitch too

in Los Angeles, California, Elgin and David lead their promising skate crew in street skating battles at a warehouse owned by Koston and Berra, where they defeat another crew led by @skategoat.

To earn money for the battles, David and Elgin deliver for a drug lord named Jason Dill. They are challenged by Kelly Hart, a rich kid from Orange County, for $5,000; after winning another battle, Kelly Hart and his best friend Chris Roberts goad Elgin into setting their battle for that night. Elgin borrows money from his grandmother for the battle.

Due to the amount of money on the line, Steve Berra announces there will be no fighting during the battle and hires a bodyguard. Nevertheless, a fight breaks out after David and Elgin realize their opponent has stolen their skate tricks, as their crew member Nyjah betrayed them to join Kelly Hart's team, and are furious to lose for the first time. Crowing over his success, Kelly Hart delivers the titular line, "You're just mad... 'cause tonight you suckaz got served!" Kelly Hart's crew takes over The Berrics as David and Elgin's crew depart.

still working on the rest of the script.

Fast and furious 900. It’s basically just a race to Tony’s Ramp and someone has to do a 900 on it first. The climax is when a skater is being chased somehow by a car on the half pipe and still make it, sending the vehicle to the loop and launching into some nearby sea. Vin diesel is played by Dane Berman. Still doesn’t get paid.

The juice mixed with the good son. Four skaters realize one of their friends is a murderous sociopath after he bludgeons a homeless man to death with his board and demands they keep it a secret. They fold to peer pressure from this hometown hero but weeks later someone else is murdered and they know it’s him. They still hesitate to come forward because skaters are dumb and don’t wanna get in trouble. Eventually he kills them all, one by one, before being randomly hit by a mini van with a nice suburban family inside. The family stops to call the police but they stay in their car and he dies alone on a cold wet street under a flickering, fading street lamp.
Don’t dip your head in or your board will end up behind you

Taking a serious stab at this...

Two movies that I feel a decent skateboard movie could be modeled after are The Wrestler and Sound of Metal.

Someone mentioned in the North Hollywood thread that everyone always tries to make skate films about the come up, but it would be much more interesting to see the opposite.

Feel like a Traler park boys style mockumentary about skaters trying to "come up" could work.

Or some depressing drama about a pro skater who makes it big, lives the dream and then realizes he's a 35 year old drug addict with no money or real life experience and has to hire beverly hills habibi to manage him some cameo gigs. The movie is basically about the mental struggles, denial and delusions of a pro at the end of his career who never had a back-up plan. In the end he gets clean, realizes skating career is done and gets a humble regular folk job. Starts skating for fun again and is in a good place, yet still missing the days when he was the shit. Posts his skating on Insta after a long while and gets flooded with comments from people who'd still buy his board. Some company re-issues his board/shoe, he gets a nice check and then the movie ends abruptly implying that he might've gone down the dream chasing rabbit hole again.

Tough to come up with a plot line for a serious movie about skateboarding that wouldn't be either boring and pointless (mid 90's) or just depressing
