HBO Real Sports - Alexis Sablone
« on: June 23, 2021, 02:26:08 AM »
Heads up if you have HBO/HBO Max, there’s a segment on Alexis Sablone on this week’s episode.  Likely not a way to link it unless they drop it on YouTube.

Premise:
“34 year old skateboarding Olympian at odds with even being in the Olympics”

Having watched it, I dig it.  It’s a pretty good summation of Alexis’ career (WHL/“Hey Mambo” features) and the push/pull of skating as a lifestyle vs sport.   Couldn’t have asked for a better rep than Alexis to articulate it in broader media channels.   I think Real Sports can be a little corny and over-produced most of the times, but this actually made me a little embarrassed that skate media is so amateurish.  Sure people will think the interviewer is a little corny, but I think she acquits herself well and does a a piece that will appeal to skaters and non skaters…though I can’t imagine Cons will be stoked on so many clips of her in NB# (which I can’t even remember how long about that must have been)

Hyped.

On top of being cool, I wouldn't be surprised if she has read the academic stuff on skateboard and has some smart shit to say.

And I'm hyped she isn't just saying how great the Olympics are into this clip. (Everyone I know associated with the Olympics in the USA does nothing but promote it as natural and the best thing ever.)

I hope Alexis get's everything she deserves.  Fairly non-corny piece, given the source.

Yeah she deserves it all. And I like the Art/Graphics she is doing for WKND. She is super talented and seems like a rad person. Too bad I don't have HBO.

It was a great piece. Alexis’ outlook totally overshadowed the corny interview/ interviewer’s stuff. Worth a watch.

I just watched it. I love Alexis. She's so charismatic and articulates her thoughts so well - important qualities for an ambassador to have. They showed that contest kf fs 5050 she does on a big 10 stair ledge and I'm just so happy that she's one of the people out there showing the world about skateboarding. I hope Converse is giving her a big pay raise this year.

This was an amazing piece, loved they showed most of her part from WHL and that Kickflip front 50, that was so fucked.

I hope she got a fat ass check for that episode. That whole episode was good. They went in on the IOC.

Journalists/documentarians don’t usually pay the subject.   They’ll often do things like provide travel/accommodations, but it’s considered a violation of ethics to pay someone for their time.  Sponsors/representatives may incentivize appearing/cooperation on their end.  I’d assume the same is true in skate mags.

it'd be cool to see her work with a sports psychologist. it seems like she's the most nervous skater at ever contest she's at, and she always ends up taking some massive slams because of it. i'd love to see her figure those nerves out and take home some wins. she might be the best ambassador for all of skateboarding.

Good for Alexis, she deserves any exposure she gets. Been killing it for a long time. With that being said, I haven't seen it but will watch this weekend. I'd rather her be representing skateboarders instead of others (no hate).

Well, for one thing her MIT cred is like catnip for journalists. With most mainstream skate coverage there's an unwritten rule that you have to make skaters seem like dumb hoodlums, or talk over them. It's aggravating to watch. They wouldn't dare try that shit with an MIT grad who has a mean frontside flip.

You also have a woman that has a long history. WHL was ‘02. Has been inside and outside of the industry. So in trying to speak to the general non skating public all off those factors are +.

and the sad reality that most pro skateboarders sounds next-level stupid due to being kooks, fried, just plain dumb or a combination of the three.

Alexis speaks like an intelligent adult and probably 100% of the non-skateboarding public would rather listen to her talk than hear Nyjah talk about "sending" over and over and over again.
