Matt Reason should have been the first answer!
His Physics model was 62mm from memory?

Been thinking about building a modern day ‘Reason’ set up. What would Matt ride if he were still here?

haha, I was close my friend!
I actually made a reason-inspired setup a while back:
northern co 8.25
Ace 44s
Loophole 56mm v-cuts
Edit: found a pic
https://www.instagram.com/p/CR0cdx0JrCl/?utm_medium=copy_link
I mean he probably rode bigger, but I figured that would be pretty close to his regular setups back then...
Guess he’d probably ride some brand like TOA (closest I can think to silver star, but still nowhere as good)but Northenr Co. seemed like a solid underground company with good wood. I also have a 8.38 DOA square shape on ice which looks like it could also be a good alternative?
Would be good to hear some anecdotal stories about his setups.

Edit: oh my friend from Sydney was apparently given one of his Adrenalin boards In the US from a fellow teammate but didn’t know what to do with a 8.25 “vert board”  ;D

@Gay Imp Sausage Metal

I’m not surprised you did that. You are #1 Reason fan and I am #2, I guess. I just loved everything about the guy (on the board) as I never met him.

I feel like he would be skating an 8.75-9.00 on 159 Indy. Theories 8.875” is probably the move but a wide Passport feels right too.

For wheels, I feel like he would be on 97a, so maybe the new 58mm Spitfire full conical. Or some big ass Speed Labs.

This could be it’s own setup thread but I’ll leave here in case someone else wants to build a Reason.

Cthulhu!

Even though I grew up pretty close to Philly and we were obsessed with those dudes as kids, I was a big wheel hater forever. It was actually seeing @Gay Imp Sausage Metal setup above that got to try some 56s, which is where I have been chilling since. Going to get 58s or 60s for my next set though.

Also, I love any excuse to rewatch that Boserio Life Splicing part.

Damn that 57mm shape looks so sick. I bet those allow for the most effortless slappies.

On another note, does anyone know what would be the closest modern day wheel to the original Powell Bomber wheels from the 90s? I see Spitfire makes Bigheads in 63mm, something tells me those might be the best equivalent

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

I actually owned and rode the 63s, I had them on an 8 inch board with indys... I also had dreads at the time!
Physics wheels were so good but looking back I probably should have been on the 55s LOL

I remember talk of big wheels on Kader’s whip when Candyland dropped.

Just rewatched and he’s on some Reason shit...3.37 is the best look we get.

good call on the 97s, I originally didn't go for spitfire because he was on physics and I wanted something more indie hence the loopholes

cheers mate, I'm stoked that my setup (even though it didn't work out for me in the end) could inspire others. I sold the loopholes shortly after but then regretted my decision and bought another pair, still my fav wheels at the moment!

yeah, their shapes were so diverse. funny that their team model is also at 61mm and bigger than the vert riders wheel. I was still so stoked when I picked up those 63s though!!!

Man that first vid. For me skateboarding has always been about that *movement* through space, first and foremost. Something which often seems lost on tiny wheel tech lines. Seeing guys just absolutely rushing through their environment and incorporating tricks at big speeds and for big air, will always trump someone doing some single huge rail, or little lines on ledges at a school.

Obviously guys on little wheels can so similar, so I'm generalizing.

100% agree, love seeing basics being done getting from point A to B, pop up the curb, wallie off the corner, 180 the manhole cover, etc

Man, I remember that interview. So thankful for those dudes bringing back big wheels. Once I got my hands on some 58s again, I could  not bring myself to ever buy anything smaller for a very long time. I had some serious BPSW PTSD.

I see Eddie Cernicky and Jeff Carlyle looking pretty good on the big wheels these days.

Freddy's Timecode part is #1 of all time. My intro to Sabbath and the first time I realized that how you push matters.

Big wheel Freddy ad from that era. I cut this out and had it on my wall:

Also posting this Boserio interview about his big wheels:

Boserio be on some ‘don’t ask me about my big wheels, son’.

Hard hitting big wheel journalism.

Back to Gall...when I saw this picture I was like ‘WTF, do you see the wheels on that fuckin’ guy!’

Drexel rail like no one was hitting it.

That was also longboard era Freddy. Look at how far apart his feet are, disregard any fisheye from the camera. I wanna say he was skating a 34" board  or something crazy like that during that era.

I love that so much about Fred.

There are some nice clips of Matt Reason in this video starting at around 2:16. I never knew how beautiful his feebles were before watching this. There's also some really sick Donny Barley stuff. Was he the skater who introduced backside kickflip wallrides to the 90s?
