How high do you lace your half cabs

I always leave the top two eyelets free of laces.

I fully disagree. All eyelets is the goated way. Leaving the top two free makes the tongue stick out way too much

100% agree. The half cabs shoud fully embrace your foot.
Quality is still shit compared with a professional produced shoe like NB, but stylewise - the only shoe that matters.

If you get the 92's or any VCU pair, the quality is definitely on par with NB#. Been running this green/brown/white pair of VCU's that's all suede, and they feel/look so good.

Lace em to the top when skating, leave the top two open for chilling.

I have this colorway and love it. I own a bajillion pairs of half cabs and I definitely wouldn't say they're shit quality like lurker says. I own several pairs of adidas and tons of Blazers mids, and Vans quality seems to be maybe a tier below them, but still very good. And honestly, I've had some Blazers where the stitching seems questionable. I obviously don't skate all of these, but from a regular wear perspective. I only really skate Half Cabs or maybe the Crockett highs. Vans has had some insane sales lately so I've been just stocking up on whatever colorways they have in my size. I'm gonna destroy a bunch of them anyway

After about of month of snow on the ground where I live I folded and bought my dream shoe. Needed new boots anyways. First Gortex purchase ever. So hyped on these.

I could compromise on one free eyelet but all eyelets is a massive faux pas, possibly illegal. All Praises due to Fred Gall.

I’ve always loved and skated half cabs throughout the time I’ve been skating but around 5 years ago I decided I would not skate anything besides half cabs until I die. I feel that the top two eyelets should not be laced. They really should be only laced to the metal eyelet.

Are you able to cut the tongue straps on the new ones?? I wanna skate a pair of half cabs again, but I’m one of the suckers that liked the old construction with the non removable insole and whatnot, I bought a pair of the new and gave up on them pretty quickly, thinking about revisiting them

Alright nerds, been curious about this one. Noticed these two pairs I have are sewn differently. Why is that?

.

The smaller multi piece toe cap configuration was the original design for the Cab shoe - Full Cab and then Half Cab, but then at some point they changed it to the current single piece toe cap and side part to streamline it and I find it works better to remove the ollie / seam stitching issues that the original design had.

Can't determine exactly when, but even some shoes I had from the late 90s were already in the newer design, looking down from the top at the toe area.

I guess like a lot of Vans shoe models, as said the 92, the 33 DX and other reissues, they have brought back certain elements of old designs for nostalgia and whatever other reasons, but a little super glue / shoe goo and they still skate almost the same anyway.

Some people have said the original design rubs more on their pinky toe, which I can understand, much like the Sk8 version with stitching around that area too, but I guess it is down to the foot shape, or even the size of foot compared to the size of shoe.

Took me a long time to figure out that a 12 fits way better in Sk8 versions and the original version of Half Cabs compared to an 11 which just rubbed and hurt if I wore them for anything more than a quick session.  I don't have easy access to half sizes here in AU, just in case anyone said try 11.5 which I did get a few of a while back, shipped from USA but not any more.

I should probably try them at some point.

^I haven't. Love the look, love the legacy (minus the name sake), but I can't wear vulcs, let alone skate them. Some day I'll get proper aftermarket insoles and wear a pair as chillers.

Damn I though i was going to get kooked hard for this. Glad I'm not alone. I am fine with vulc, just never bothered. They looked so sick back in the day on Keenan and Guy and stuff too.

I was a fully laced up guy or die until this discussion popped up, been leaving the top two undone, and i gotta say, its pretty nice on the chillers. Fully laced up when skating though.

Thanks!

Some things I have found a fair bit of info or at the very least, info I put together from memory or my own experiences, but although I have had Half Cabs in some form throughout the years from when they came out to the present, I could never recall exact info about them.

The other Cab shoe versions were more prevalent in the late 90s, or at least I had those more than Half Cabs for a bit, but that timeline makes sense.

The funniest thing is the late 90s Half Cabs had a really wide sole on them, way wider than any current shoe, which has a much smaller tapered sole on the shoes, when I compare.  There are other things to note, but this was the main thing, along with way thinner tongues, different fit / toe cap that sat up a lot, etc.
