some guys at Weird records in NYC put some of our songs on the play list for their post-punk dj night.  hoping to make a trip up there to play live by summer.

not bad man, and i saw neil young listed in influences  :).  i've been recording a lot of acoustic in piano stuff that's definitely inspired by early 70's neil songs, and i've yet to post any of it anywhere, but i will soon and i'll put up a link.

i just put up a myspace to show my buddy some stuff i'm working on.  here are a couple of short instrumental "themes" i've been playing with friends.  these are sort of like run-thrues of songs we've come up with that we're still writing, i have to stress that this project is in it's early stages.  some of the stuff we play is primitive, some of it isn't.  right now i'm trying to find somebody with a good voice to compliment some songs.

tim, thats fucking awesome.  i can't believe thats over the built in computer mic.  it has a really good spacey/low-fi sound.

i was going to tell you to invest in an interface and a good music program, but your shit sounds good just the way it is.

Thank you. It works for more droney spaced out songs but when I try to record a cleaner sounding song with piano it sounds terrible. Here's some Chopin played badly on my keyboard to demonstrate the shittyness of the mic Chopin.m4a - 2.30MB

ok well you might want to look into getting an interface.  its just a box that goes to the computer.  you just plug your instruments and mics right into it.  i thought it was kind of pointless at first, but it makes recording so easy.  they usually run about a hundred bucks and a lot of them come with a basic software program too.

this is the one I have:

Does it actually make recordings sound better vs. just plugging a mic directly into the computer via an adapter? I have a 1/4 cable mic to go into my tape deck and a usb mic for the computer which has pretty good sound quality. Interfaces have always seemed kind of pointless to me as well but the only recording experience I have is in my bedroom with garageband so...

I need to invest into a mic for recording my acoustic.

Also I need some help, when ever I try to record different tracks, their seems to be lag between the tracks. And I know that at first you maybe thinking if your playing on beat, but the lag runs about a beat and half off. So it seems to either a problem with my mic or my software. Any suggestions?

If you're using garage band (or most any other music software I would imagine) you can try just dragging the 2nd track back on the timeline so it starts a beat and a half earlier. You may have to listen to it a few times to get it close and it's kind of tedious but it would save you having to fix your computer. I would suggest getting a mic anyway because acoustic guitar isn't gonna sound very good recorded on a built in mic anyway.

Alright cool. And I'm using a tiny ass computer mic. Like ones that come with an ear bud on your black berry that has a little mic on it.

There are a few possible reasons for the latency: Either it's because your computer is old and doesn't have enough ram/speed to process it fast enough or you can look into your software settings if you find something about latency and set that one to zero or even less  than that (don't know if that option come with every programm, I only know it from Logic). Also if you have any plugins or effects (guitar effects, equalizers, compressor, limiter, etc.) that run real-time while recording you might be able to kill the latency (lag) by switching those off as long as you're recording stuff and apply them later, because they eat up a lot of your computers ressources, which results in the latency.
I'll go frontside on some tranny for you.

check your music program.  there might be a function on there to correct latency.  i use ableton, and there is a delay feature that you can use to sync your tracks back up if latency causes them to get off.

and to answer the earlier question, yes i do think an interface would be worth it.  before i got one i didn't really see the point, but now i can't live without it.  worth every penny

Hey dudes, I have until April 30th to re-create the song April Skies by the Jesus & Mary Chain.  However I must do it without mics or instruments, on free software.  I might just download Adobe Audition or something but any suggestions or links would be appreciated.  Not sure this is possible but if there's a way to separate the original vocals from the audio that would be perfect.

Actually Rawb could you just rap about hipsters over the song and send it to me.  You'll be my new god.
