i started with Ableton, now using logic, and i'm probably gonna bite the bullet soon and start learning pro tools.
ableton is pretty easy to wrap your head around. its really intuitive, comfortable, and inviting for beginners. i find it encourages experimentation more than other DAWs.
Logic is a little stuffier/more "professional". if you're familiar with garageband, you might be able to pick things up quickly though. you can import your garageband projects directly into logic and go from there.
i wouldn't suggetst using protools right off the bat unless you plan on reading a couple of books first
i'd say give Ableton a shot. you can try the complete program for free for 30 days:
https://www.ableton.com/en/trial/also, a lot of people like presonus' studio one. they also have a free version, and you can upgrade if you like it:
http://studioone.presonus.com/free/also lots of new Ipad apps that are supposed to be very good and full featured, so check some of those out too if you have an ipad
hope you find something that works for you
