Question about vans cupsoles
« on: December 17, 2021, 08:34:58 AM »
Been looking at the gilby high lately cause I really like the idea of a stylish cupsole with some ankle support. However, I absolutely hate the super duper grabby flick on most vulc shoes, and vans advertises the WaffleCup to flick like a vulc. So do they have more of a cupsole or a vulc like flick to them?

I've got some Crockett Highs that I'm skating right now and the main thing with these was just breaking them in. First time wearing them they felt more like lightweight boots than skate shoes but after wearing them for a bit they broke in nice. The flick on them felt a little clunky at first but they break in fast and the flick feels great after a session or two. Definitely not as grabby as the vans vulcs can be and the flick breaks in faster than the vulcs too. Only compliant with the Crocketts and waffle cup in general is that the soles started wearing out kinda quick imo (bald spots on sole before any holes on the upper in my case). Besides the akward but quick break in period, they're great shoes.

If you're used to more traditional cupsoles, the giblerts will probably feel "grabby" as you put it. This was my experience anyways. and I second what the guy above me said about the soles wearing quickly. I only skated them a few times before i retired them to become my mountain bike shoes (because of the flick), I looked at the bottom recently and there was way more wear/smooth spots than expected.

I skated Kyle Walker 1's all of 2020 and now on NB Tiagos for all of 2021. Just tossed both pairs on to compare. The Kyle Walkers were more grippy for sure but not by a huge amount. Maybe 10% or so.

Crockett Highs definitely flick more like a vulc to me, but I would still highly recommend them if you wanted to give them a try. They're probably my favorite skate shoe of all time.

Crocketts are a great shoe sole grabs the board for sure similar to the vulc shoes vans makes. If you want something softer the Kyle walker 2 is a great choice but damn they are ugly that’s the only thing. Wish they would do a version with laces

Vans can call their shoes "cupsoles" but they're just vulcs with the sole stitched on. The shoe just have an insole and no midsole. It's a glorified vulc. Sorry for the rant but that shit is just lazy.

everything except for the ave pro is also super heavy for a "cupsole".

This. Sadly true. Your feet will hurt like a motherfucker after the session. Not like a "real" Cupsole.

But also one of the most beautiful hi shoes ive ever skated.

I always felt like the concept was too good to be true.  This pretty much confirms it.  Oh well, at least the logo looks cool.

Vans AVEs look like they'd be bulletproof but that sneaky mesh will find ways to rip that you'd never expect.

Just an FYI, Crockett 2, Crockett Hi, Kwalks 1, Kwalks 2, and every other "wafflecup" model are Cupsoles in the heel to midfoot and then the toe is a pretty traditional Vans Vulc so the toe will flick and feel like a vulc from Vans. Albeit, the Crockets and Kwalks don't flick as aggressively as the normal PRO Classics and even the Skate Classics. They flick more consistently and naturally (closer to how medium minimal cupsoles typically flick)

On my second pair now. They pretty much feel like beefed up vulcs. Grip is pretty similar, padding under feet is a bit better, and yes they are stiff and heavy as others have mentioned. I also had the sole wear out before the other parts, like others mention. Still lasted longer than other Vans in my experience, and I never got the feeling of zero padding that I associate with other vans vulcs that are wearing out (I used to skate a lot of TNT models, and I wear slip ons for non skate purposes; they both get way more thin feeling underneath my feet).

Skating the (sadly discontinued) Paradoxxx right now and it is a true cupsole with a nice thick midsole and a thinner-than-usual-ultracush insole. I wish they still made these.

I'm not sure why, but the hairy legs on Mr Wafflcup are kind of unsettling
