what’s the best european woodshop?
« on: January 19, 2022, 04:55:39 AM »
EU pals what up!

i’ve been working at a skateshop for the past couple months and we’ve been looking into making our shop boards for some time now. we’re hoping to get them in for spring/summer. i’ve been doing some research and here are the woodshops i found so far:

https://www.mdcn-dist.net/ - based in hamburg, i know about one polish company that made boards there but i didn’t get to try them out

https://quarterdist.com/ - supposedly magenta made boards there for a while during covid? i skated a few magenta boards during that time period but i’m 99% sure all of them were bbs

https://hlcskateboardfactory.com/ - those are jart boards, they are pretty good but the minimum order is 50 decks which is a little steep

http://www.sk8boardfactory.com/ - this one is called crs, i know nothing about them, don’t know where they are located, what companies use their decks etc

http://cirus.hu/main - hungarian skateboard manufacturer, ben degros skated one of their decks and liked it but it wasn’t their regular maple board so i’m not too sure about them

https://instagram.com/berlinboardsbrewery?utm_medium=copy_link - this is a new manufacturer from berlin, i don’t know nothing about them as well

there are also two skateboard manufacturers in poland (locals, nibiru) but i’ve skated boards from both and they were kinda shitty. there’s also gnosis in the uk but because of brexit they might be too expensive for us.

is there anything else? do any of you have any experience with boards from the woodshops i listed here? please let me know guys :)

From the Woodshop list, these are some other woodshops in EU:

Cape Town Skates (est 2018)
UK

Karate Wood Chop (est 2020)
Netherlands

https://www.instagram.com/karatewoodchop/

Ecological Skateboard-Distribution (est 2015)

Nibiru Skateboards Workshop

nibiru-skateboards.com
https://www.instagram.com/nibiruskateboards/

Locals Skateboards Manufacture
Poland
sklep.localsskateboards.com
https://www.instagram.com/locals_skateboards_mfg/

I know you have a couple of them on your list just by name, but I would also like to use your list in the Woodshop thread too if that is ok?

One of the other things that you might be able to do is contact them to get a test board or two from any that seem promising, so you can skate them yourself, or have some of the others you know skate them too.

This was the best way we went about it for boards for a project or two, as well as others saying most woodshops are pretty good with that sort of thing.

You definitely want to know what you are getting and shouldn't have to blind order something if you haven't tested it at all.

yeah no problem. i actually made a run of boards with some friends a few years ago that were from nibiru and they were the worst boards i've ever skated. locals used to be shitty too but i've heard that they got better. last locals board i skated was flat as fuck though, like literally zero concave. i like mellower boards but that was too mellow for me. i'm going to reach out to some of these and ask for samples. thanks for the info!

yeah but it's not like it's its own continent, still an european country. shipping would still be cheaper than getting them from the americas and if the boards are good then we will try to figure something out with them. obviously for logistical reasons i'm going to look into the woodshops that are from countries in the eu but uk is a possibility too :)

The first two are not woodshops. They import their decks from China and Print them in their Warehouse.
Mdcn sucks. Quater has been alright usually: very nice and stiff in the beginning, but they get soft in about three weeks or so. They don‘t break easily.

Inclu skateboards are a pretty special woodshop. They produce them at a workplace for disabled people, so you would be supporting a good cause. The wood is Ok. A little bit on the heavy side. They have very limited runs usually, so you have to get lucky to get some.

Ha yeah, I guess it was just a quick copy and paste, but it is a funny thing - sometimes it is a given they are included by proximity, but with all that is going on and talk of crazy taxes and all that from some people on here, I guess some of those woodshops are now "out of range" but I get the impression people still buy and sell things across the UK to EU and back.

Also my definition of EU is Europe, not so much the European Union, but as I am in AU, everything is a world away.

Curious now how many people do still have open trade, or if it is all but done?

If you like their shapes, I would go to HLC. 50 isn't that much in my opinion. If you don't sell them all you and your co-workers can ride them.

Who does Antiz decks? I skate them from time to time. At first, I wasnt really sure if I liked them, they remind me of Crailtap decks, but after a while, when I got used to them, I found them to last for quite some time and the shape are good too. Kinda pointy, flatter, and boards themselves are thinn and crispy. Also, they back Peter Molec, who is like the most legendary dude from Slovakia, which is great too.

antiz boards are from an unknown woodshop in china. i remember somebody on here asked them about that and they got mad and didn’t give an answer lol

@Turtle Boy we are a small shop with 2 workers (i work there full time and the homie works part time). if the shop starts growing and we get the online store running then we will definitely start sourcing boards from hlc but for now a smaller run is all we can afford, 20-30 boards.

Artprint imports chinese decks and just print them. I have friends that regularly order from them and to be honest they are not bad. They use resin glue, the decks feel light and a bit flexy, but hold up ok if you don't skate big stairs and gaps. They have some good shapes, too.

The local brands I know have used quarter distribution, which is China as well but seems to be better quality and better shapes. They do small runs, but are probably still backed up with orders because of Covid.

That was me, who asked them. I am fairly shure they are mdcn: made in China and printed in Hamburg. I ended up buying an antiz and I hated it. The shape wasn‘t my thing and it went soft pretty quickly. I have tried „trap“ skateboards from the same Woodshop and those were pretty bad as well.

Hlc is yart, Right? I haven’t skated those in ages. They are manufactured in Spain.

Quarter distribution do smaller runs. They do most of the boards of the small local brands in my area in Germany.

This guy does smaller runs as well. He prints on hlc and BBS wood (if he can get it). Site is in German but just contact the dude via email.

These guys also do smaller runs. Made in Germany. Quality is alright. Boards are a bit heavy.

blag skateshop seems very expensive, 44 euro for a deck when ordering 15 is a lot, wholesale prices for dlx boards are lower. have you skated any of those quarter decks? if so, what did you think of them?

Quater Distribution decks were pretty good. I have skated a few. They seem like deluxe wood with bbs shapes if that makes any sense.

This is so good, as far as relevant info.

I get bits and pieces of info now and then to add to the Woodshop thread, but I can definitely take a fair bit from this thread too.

Thank you to all the EU people helping with this.

Found it:

France

https://www.artprinteurope.com/skateboard/printing-options/

Some good options for smaller runs / cheaper middle of deck graphics - 20 boards.

https://www.artprinteurope.com/skateboard/manufacturing-process/

Manufacturing process
ArtPrint has selected with the greatest of care the best skateboard factory to print your custom skateboards. Our headline is “we don’t want to offer skateboard that we don’t want to skate ourselves”. We are particularly demanding about the construction quality and ask a lot on oneself so ArtPrint has scrupulously tested the main skateboard factories before choosing the one we’re working with since more than 7 years now. We have a very large choice of 25 different board references (same source and same construction) available in 3 different concaves (medium / medium-high / high). Our catalogue contains skateboard from 7’25 to 9’ and also a couple of old school shapes & cruisers to satisfy all your different requests. The construction of our skateboards is 100% north Canadian maple that comes from forest sustainably managed then pressed with epoxy glue for a better rigidity, sturdiness and top durability.

Each skateboard is made of 7 plies whose 3 of them are colored (top, 3rd, 6th) plus top engraving including size and serial number. All our custom skateboards are guaranteed against fault and delamination.
