Always thought Donovan looked so much like Ian svenonius from nation of Ulysses/the make up

Spiv! You forgot Cupid Car Club/M.P. Skulkers, Weird War, Scene Creamers, Chain and the Gang, and ESCAPE-ISM.

Agreed. Donovan is like a much better looking and less simian Ian Svenonius.

PS - Gifted Hater's JAEBUT take is contrarian bait, but expected. It wouldn't be engaging and he wouldn't be doing his job if he just praised it for the classic part it's bound to be.

Yo! Hyped on the Ian Svenonius mention! I saw him open up for Dean Wareham last year with his band Escape-ism, and it was both excellent and hilarious.

Yeah, if some of you genuinely think that part was underwhelming (instead of just being internet contrarians) then you need your head examining.

He had his bassist laughing the entire set. His crowd work was also top notch, he had everyone engaged in the set.

I listen to these Gifted Hater monthly streaming highlight compilations when I'm doing chores every now and then, because they can be entertaining and don't require any focussed concentration. Today I heard him slide effortlessly into a short Tony Soprano bit, because a dude in a video looked like A.J. (right at the start), and it suddenly hit me; Joa is Nick Mullen's ten year younger brother. I can't unhear it now. Their comedic sensibilities (especially when alcohol-fuelled) are pretty similar. They must have been seperated at some point; Nick was send to Maryland to live with a troubled family and got into all sorts of stuff that didn't really help him while growing up, whereas Joa was send to Orange County to live with an (upper) middle class British couple that send him off to private school and got really into skateboarding.

Ha! True. I didn't think you forgot though. I was just letting you know I'm a long-time fan of dude, but I tend to come across as pedantic. I'm aware it's like someone mentioning Eno and coming back with, "I love Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno!" I don't jam econo.

I really like his takes beyond skating. In fact, I like so much I'm considering subbing to his Patreon, and I've never given money to any "content creator", except Matt Day photo content (BTW, he is into skating too and a fan of Ed Templeton).

From the top of my mind, I can remember his takes on relationships (the James Cole video) and about artistry in general, something he talks about a lot because I think he majored in Arts or something?

I especially appreciate how articulate he is - I always admired this, people that can express ideas objectively, concisely, clearly and with good vocabulary. Think about any Steve Albini interview.

Anyway, not saying the guy is a Walter Benjamin of YouTube, but I like it. Way better than most influencers that pretend to know about something and do a shallow 45 minute video on it drinking coffee in a plant-filled house.

I very much agree when it comes to a lot of his stuff, but there's definitely a lot of other times where his takes are very cringy, and are made even worse by his confident ignorance. This dude has some of the dumbest takes on hiphop you'll here.

I will say though, even as an enormous Nas fan, I gotta give an exception to his quick little off the dome Nas parody. Pretty much everything else he says in that clip is kinda braindead, but the little freestyle is spot on... (6:20)

To be fair, Nas has been riding illmatic’s coattails since it released. He’s had a few good songs sprinkled throughout his career but nothings come close to his first album and the majority of his projects are pretty ass. I do agree with you that Joa has really really bad takes on hip hop, but he’s a rich Gen Z kid from the OC with British roots so what can we really expect.

Yeah, absolutely. Gifted Hater is not some sort of genius comedic promise or something. He just has a talent for this kind of stuff he does; the kind of off-the-cuff, observational, satirical commentary or whatever you want to label it as. Plus he's just pretty clearly an intelligent, eloquent dude.

It could be fun if he tried to take it a little outside of the skateboarding world, but it also could be completely shit. I think that would have to be about other (less niche) stuff he's about as passionate about as he is about skateboarding though. Cause I think his ability to notice and zoom in on the tiniest of details is a real strength. Maybe photography or something. I usually like it when he shares his take on the aesthetics of a video and the composition of a frame etc. Stuff that I really don't consciously notice otherwise. Or maybe take it broader, and do something art-related with Ted Barrow. See how that works out. He's done some things with him before I remember.

I also only ever listen to these compilations lately (which I suppose are made and shared by Joa himself, or just someone with a good sense of when he's at his funniest). I don't sub to his Patreon, and I am way too old to listen to any long ass live streams in their entirety anyways, so my overall impression of Joa is based on a small bit of his entire output. The worst takes of his that ever really reach me can by and large be labelled as 'he's in his twenties, and he's not a guy that looks/sounds/acts like the type that started his maturity extraordinarily early as well' or 'he's a spoiled, little, annoying prick, but his intentions are okay'. I only remember one time I think, when he first posted his video on Christine which included some tone-deaf 'jokes' about Cole throwing suitcases around and shit, that I thought was really shitty behaviour of his. And as I recall he deleted that video, took those jokes out, reuploaded it and later apologised for it and acknowledged he made a mistake.

Clip compilations are usually done by people in the community. It's money that bigger content creators leave on the table, presumably because they're usually pretty set up by their revshare from another source like Twitch and Patreon. Sometimes, it's somebody they directly employ but the clipper is the channel admin for the duration of that employment. It's a way to boost your virality without making any new content.

I'm not saying it's not Joa making those edits but I do think it's probably kinda hell to scrub through every dumb second of your live stream looking for when you clearly remember when a bit hit. If I were in his situation, I would hire a homie at least.

I had a hot take that It Was Written was slept on but I'm listening now and it's doing all the big budget 90's hip-hop albums things and I can't tell if it's quaint or dated or if my own nostalgia is tinted.

Anyone watch this? DD and GH have golden odd couple chemistry. Love their intense yet light hearted arguments on the most trivial shit, it’s hilarious.
These two as a duo as commentators at a skate contest would be gold.

Been curious to hear his response to MJ's passing, thanks for sharing.
He's about 15 years younger than me, kinda in the wheelhouse for learning about what "young" people follow in skating but after looking up his age he's leaning on old lol.

Anyone watch this? DD and GH have golden odd couple chemistry. Love their intense yet light hearted arguments on the most trivial shit, it’s hilarious.
These two as a duo as commentators at a skate contest would be gold.

Holy shit, DD is a complete dumbass lol
