First session in forever
« on: February 27, 2022, 04:03:33 AM »
Today I skated properly for the first time in over two years. Tore half my acl like a year before that and have had really bad back pain since, it messed up the whole frame somehow. Anyways we've been locked into our apartment complex here in Shenzhen for a week because of a new Covid outbreak, but we have this sizeable private green space in the middle of it, which also has some decent flat with a 2 and a 3 stair and some mellow banks. Recently the weather's been stellar so we've been spending the afternoons outside, and it's packed (this is one of the most overworked cities in the world, so two weeks quarantine is like two weeks vacation for most people here). Anywho my wife asked me to teach her how to skate so I took my board downstairs and showed her how to do it, but before I knew it I was at it myself and lo and behold, the two years of an hour physio training daily have paid off and I could do it! Shook the rust out in like 10 mins, did some decent ollies and kickflips and just tore around the place and was just incredibly happy. How the fuck did I ever live without it.
Then before you know it there's a like 13 year old Chinese girl on a board as well and she can roll! Kickflips and everything. So we skated flat for an hour or so, I showed her some old man tricks and also showed a bunch of other kids how to roll around and it was just splendid.
TLDR: Skateboarding is wonderful.

Describe a great session you had after a very long time of your board.

Congrats on getting back skating again btw, that’s awesome.

Fuckyeah Roary. Curious to hear your PT regimen.
I’ve been out of commission for almost two years with health / injury stuff but went out on Wednesday afternoon since it was in the mid 60s in nyc. Some local kids have a community flat bar and I was able to sneak in a little boardslide and do a couple of flat ground oldster lines despite my jelly legs and it was maybe the happiest moment I’ve had in months.  Get skitch or die trying <3

Great to hear that you made it out there, pure happiness indeed.

As to my PT, it took me a long time to get it right. I started with regular physiotheraphy, and in retrospect it turns out the first therapist I had made all the right calls, but I didn't practice regularly enough. After a long period of relative stagnation and trying out some other methods that didn't end up working for me I went back to the standard physio, and somehow something clicked.
Turns out that my problems are actually in the hips and legs, not the back (where I feel the pain). It's kind of hilarious how lopsided my body is, I'm goofy so the muscles in the left leg and hip are strong and somewhat rigid, while those in the right leg are weak but flexible. So I'm basically doing a ton of glute-strengthening exercises (like folding the knee up and down while lying on the side using a rubber band, lunges, bridges in different varieties), plus some core stuff (bird dog etc), and a lot of thigh stretches with a foam roller. I've found out that I can make almost any level of back pain disappear with five minutes of foam rolling the most painful muscle areas in my thighs. That's been a game changer.
It's really not rocket science or reinventing the wheel, all standard stuff. The key for me has been the mindset and the consistency. I do an hour-long routine of the exercises I mentioned after getting up in the morning now, every single day, no matter what. That's really made all the difference.

Hope that helps, and that you all will enjoy your sessions whenever you can!

I remember a few months ago, I went to the DIY in the morning after I took a 5 days break from skating. The sun was up, it was super warm, I was by myself, doing little line while listening to Grandaddy. I landed everything I wanted, I was not trying to learn or land hard tricks. One of the best feeling I had a skateboard

45 and been skating over 30 years. I had a break in my early 20’s but rekindled my love for it and never stopped since. I’m too neurotic to go without skating over four days. It’s awesome the board is back on your feet again

Congrats on coming back!

I had partial tears on my MCL and PCL along with a fractured knee cap in 2015, I was out for the better part of a year. Was on my PT shit in and out of the the gym, eating better, seeing whatever minuscule changes I could make to get back on board.

I never thought things I take for granted would change essentially over night like being able to walk normally, put on socks, or use the shitter.

Every nice day I make sure to at least ride my board to the store and enjoy it!

 ;D

Went out and skated with a friend of mine for the first time in about 3-4 years. It felt really good! I was still able to land most of the tricks I was able to do years ago and attempted to try a few new ones too. Did make me realize I need a new setup though. I borrowed my friends 8.5 board with much looser trucks than I am used to and I think that will be the direction I go when I purchase a new board.
