Which trucks for which Deck?
« on: March 30, 2022, 12:43:05 PM »
Interested to know peoples preferences for trucks on different wheelbases. Currently running 148 Thunders on a Chocolate 8.375 with 14.25 Wheelbase and feels nice and manouverable. Same trucks on 8.38 Krooked made it feel clunky and heavy to me. Want to change to indy’s for the slight height difference when the Thunders hit axle (shouldnt be too long now)

ace classics on 14.25 with medium kicks/steep concave feel nice to me (44, 8.5)
i rode thunder 149s on a 14.0 chocolate g052 (8.25 with 8.0 taper), it was kind of wack but the scoop felt nice.

personally the kicks matter more than wheelbase for me as far as trucks are concerned. steep/short kicks on thunders just feel wrong, while the same on aces might be alright.
y’all not fuckin with what i’m fuckin with

Absolutelt hated my Passort 14.25wb deck on Hollow Lights 147.

Breaking in new Royals 139 on an Enjoi 14.25 and it feels much much better.

It sounds lame but matching a pro's setup is usually going to lead to a board that skates well. There's too much variation between shapes to say that one brand of truck goes with a brand of deck.

Yeah ive heard copying Daewon's setup is the best way to get a board that rides well.

To the OP -

Keep in mind that trucks have a "wheelbase" too.. The axles are different distances apart depending on the geo so if you want to imitate a particular setup you've liked you should always calculate what I called "effective wb" which is your decks wb + the axle offset. Also, switching to indys and imparting a whole new set of variables is just as likely to make it feel worse as it is to make it better. If you don't already have madness you're well on your way.

My advice as a guy with a hundred decks and 4 dozen sets of trucks? If you already like the chocolate/thunder combo then just skate that.

Thanks for the advice dude, I’ve purposely tried to stay away from the madness rabbit-hole for a while now as i can get pretty ocd about some things.

I’d love to have a quiver of different setups but funds (and kids) don’t allow. I may just end up trying a board with slightly longer tail. Not sure if i like Those girl/chocolate pin-tails on the G016 as much as i used to

I mean what kind of baseplate we talking here?  Forged?  Cast?

I'm a big fan of thunders and ventures on 14" wb.

If you aren't super tall or leggy it's a nice combined wb for quick but decent pop.

I’m 6’ with long legs and the thunders seem to work ok on 14.25 WB. I’m liking 8.375’s at the moment but would maybe like to go up to 8.5 at some stage. I’m considering the new Royals for some nostalgia. Had a red hangered pair in 2000

I generally follow Ben degros’ advice. As I recall, thunders and ventures push the wheelbase out, so those are better on short wheelbases (I skate 14”), whereas indys and aces push the wheelbase in, so generally better on decks with a longer wheelbase.

That said, I’ve had thunders on 14.25 wheelbase boards and after a day or 2 it feels the same.

Yeah i will agree there for sure, i’m on my second consecutive G016 shape board and it felt very familiar from the first ollie with the 148’s. Not too sure if 14” wb may feel a bit cramped with my spangly legs. Think im just after a bit more room tail-wise (i have uk 11 feet and have to scooch around a bit to cram all the meat on the tail).
Ben’s videos are great (im also a carpenter here in UK), he seems to have a good knowledge base on trucks etc but i guess thats all relative to individual attributes and tastes with skating.

Well, this is why Indy standards tend to me a good standard for modern decks. They work pretty well on 14.25 and up and for some people even as low as 14. These are the most common wheelbases for most decks especially BBS. Now before I get roasted, yes there’s tons of 14s on there and shit, but lots of 8” and up have 14.25-14.38 standard.

I’d also wager Thunder Teams ain’t too far off for many in this range.

It’s weird Ive never had a pair of Indys. Done Royal back in the day and was a heavy Venture advocate but never took the plunge with Indy’s. They were expensive over here when i started but now i kinda feel cheated that ive not tried a set. I’ve been infatuated witht the idea of 149 forged hollows on a 8.5 eagle deck for the last couple years now but got thunders as a gift so just stuck with them

Use what the pro's use is not a bad idea actually.
I rode Real Mason Silva 8.28 with Thunders at first. Dident like it. Put on some indy's - Wow, this deck is awesome!
And idk about you guys, but Thunder and DLX is usually like hand in a glove. Which makes sense as they are under the same roof.

I strangely found the opposite. Had Thunders on a Krooked 8.38 and the nose felt heavy and it just felt big to move. Manuals also suffered weirdly.
Probably some truth in the pro’s thing though. Guess its a good short cut too for younger guys to get on something that works sooner rather than having to trial and error
