I sport climb. I've got a trad rack I inherited from my old climbing partner, but I'm not confident enough in my placement yet to take falls on gear I place.
Because you can't kill and idea, and we will not be ruled!

I was into bouldering until COVID locked down all the gyms. Funny enough, the pandemic got me back into skating everyday and i haven't picked up climbing since I started skating a lot more than before.

but bouldering is a lot of fun. It honestly reminds me a bit of skate culture: part workout, part posting up with friends, cheering when a friend finishes a problem, etc.

I don’t know shit about it, but I like to climb around on rocks at Joshua Tree and in AZ when I go camping out there.
I am genuinely interested, but have been lazy and done no research, which is all on me.
I’ll be reading this thread for sure.

I've been looking into joining a gym.  Two friends are pestering me to get into it.  I think it'd be great for winter time. The local gym is only 70 a month with access to a decent weight room.

My only rock climbing experience was in the wild during the summer after high school. Some friends and I were about to hike to get to some abandoned mine on the outskirts of wrightwood when this Spicolli looking guy we knew from school drove by, recognized us, then asked if we wanted to go to the 9th wonder of the world. We followed him down the highway for some time when he pulled over, got out, then led us down to this rock named Spring Crag.

Without saying anything the guy strapped up and started climbing up a 50 foot side of a mountain solo. My buddies and I were smoking blunts at the bottom next to some creek when he put in something at the top, came back down, then said, “alright, who’s next?”. I volunteered and learned real quick there are certain moves and techniques that I never realized. Thought you just muscled your way up there but leaned quick that burns you out fast.

Anywho, it was a struggle but I made it to the top, then we went home. Always wanted to give the indoor ones a whirl since but that just hasn’t happened. So yeah, that’s my only experience.

I haven’t gone in a bit, but I spent a good 10 years or so road tripping a bunch.  I never got super fantastic, but I could lead the occasional trad .11 nice and clean.  Spent time in Yosemite, Joshua tree, smith rock, Squamish, etc, etc.

I’d like to get back into it at some point as I have some unfinished projects at the local crag and boulder field that I’d like to bag before someone else does and it feels great on the body, mind and soul just to get outside like that.

There is something incredibly satisfying about climbing.  I’ve spent days under a boulder, and felt elated to get just one move higher.  Unlocking moves that felt impossible is such a great feeling!

Bumping this ol girl.

I took up bouldering while recovering from an ankle injury, and I kinda immediately fell in love. It really does tickle a lot of the same spots that skateboarding does – repetitive tries, figuring out new ways to move your body and finding the tricks behind the tricks...

My upper body is pathetic, but the balance and leg strength you bring with from skating has helped me send way tricker slabs than I have any right to haha. Overhangs and crimpy shit kill me quickly though.

I like climbing. Outdoor climbing is probably one of riskiest feeling activities I’ve ever done. Some coworkers got me into it a couple years ago, they were both avid sport climbers. They threw me right onto routes that seemed way too hard and way too tall but I could usually do them. I loved learning the little tricks and techniques.
I don’t really climb anymore, since I’m not comfortable leading and those guys are long gone, but I still think about it. Really hate all the lingo that goes with it though.

I started bouldering about 2 months ago and have progressed rather fast which I'm proud of. It's been really fun especially since it's been serving as a nice replacement for skating on workdays with it getting dark so early

Anyone who's in the east bay area and wants to climb, hmu! I usually climb with 2-3 other skaters who recently started climbing too. We try to go at least twice a week. Haven't explored outdoor climbing yet, but it is definitely something I want to get into eventually.

My partners uncle has been climbing since his early youth and he is 62 now. It took me like 8 years to finally go climbing with him and I thought that I majorly fucked up by not going earlier.

We mostly do pretty mellow shit but when we go home in the car everyone besides the driver falls asleep, so I guess it´s ok. This guy even drilled some routes and knows the area we always go to crazy well. Sometimes we meet other climbers who know who he is and come up to say hi.

In the winter I go bouldering to the gym even more than skating since I dont have a proper indoor skatepark near by.

I climb far from good, but man it´s fun. Looking forward to some more climbing and skating now that my family home is finally finished after two years of sacrifice...

About 25 years ago I was a member at the rock gym in Oaks. It was like $80-100 for a whole fucking year, unlimited visits. I guess it costs more now, huh? I like how the Oaks one (and the now defunct Go Vertical behind Title 10 Skatepark) were on the taller side. I’m kind of a simpleton and I really just like going up. I get super bored bouldering.

My friend and I also climbed to the top of their warehouse complex one time after the rock gym. That was fun.

Most gyms now are much better facilities than in the past.  They are super expensive to open, and run.  So the prices are definitely up.  The gym I goto has an annual membership deal once a year, and it comes to about $550 CAD.  That's actually considered super cheap around here.  To be honest, I love climbing so much that I would pay double that price easy.  Plus I also spend money going on climbing trips, buying gear..etc.  It's still cheap compared to some sports like golf.  Also, I was shocked to hear that my parents pay $1300 a year for yoga.  In comparison climbing isn't that expensive.

yep I’ve done both. I built a very small training wall during Covid. Also built a huge indoor lead climbing wall in my cousin’s garage. I shaped wooden holds for my training wall. Have you ever tried a moon board?

No but that was the idea. I have the space and tools.
What did you use for cushion?

I only climb indoors cause there's no natural routes where I live. So I don't have a crash pad

They have about top route routes (with sometimes 2 routes on one rope). There’s a rotation of about 5 aut belays that rotate through the gym. I’ve heard good things about the cliffs on callowhill so I assume they have some as well.

I pay about $1k for the year and the math works out if I go twice a week. And then there’s a 10% discount on anything else you buy there which is cool. I can’t imagine the start up costs for a gym that big.

I started going again couple months ago and mostly indoor bouldering, but I'm suppose to go rope-climbing during Christmas

Mostly started because of a second shoulder injury. My physio told me I needed to build up more upper-muscle, and it would be more fun than regular training. A friend hooked up me  with a free session at the gym he goes to and I go addicted pretty fast. As other stated, lots of similarities with skating but damn, all this years of wrist and fingers injuries are the worst for crimps or pinches

I'm over in eastern Europe doing some traveling, and popped in to a gym yesterday and rented some shoes. Was a completely new type of climbing for me – technically bouldering, but without the "problems" in the regular sense of the word. You have these numbered holds that you're supposed to follow, starting with two #1 holds, and then #2 for your right hand, #3 for your left and so on. And it continues like this in multiple figures of 8, up and down the wall, traversing back and forth, until hold 56 or something like that – which will be the same holds as you started on. And then you're free to take another lap.

Needless to say, I got my ass handed to me – these routes were laying my weak spots completely bare.

A pic from the gym below, with a rough drawing of how the route went:
